To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. HEUSER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Rope-Clamping Devices, of which the following' is a full. clear, concise, and exactdescription, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification.
The invention relates to rope clamping devices, and has for its object the production of a device which acts to bindand se curely hold the rope when a pulling strain is exerted upon it in either direction, the clamping effect of the device being augmented in proportion to the increased pull# ing strain exerted upon the rope. y,
The device is particularly adapted for use when a rope is desired to be stretched from one pointl to another between several of the devices, the clamping effect not being impaired by any variation of tension between any two of the devices, thus permitting the rope to be released from any one of the several, without releasing the tension of the rope between any of the remaining points of attachment. y
The invention will be more fully explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation, showing sev eral of the clamping devices in position, and engaging a rope between them;

Referring more particularly'to the drawings, the numeral 10 designates the plate by means of which the device may be mounted in position. The ends of this plate are apertured as at 11 and 12, to receive the means by which the device is held lin position.
The clamping device is conveniently composed of two coperating clamping elements, generally designated 18 and 14., which are secured to, and depend from, the plate 10,
but in different planes with relation to each other, one of the members being adapted to be moved toward the plane of the other, to clamp the rope between them.
The member 13 is composed of a pair of laterallyseparated, stationary members 15 and 16, which project from the plate 10. Each of these members 15 and 16 have pro'- vided upon them a pair of forwardly projecting lugs 17 and 18, which conveniently form supports for the rope 19, while the same is being wound about the members 15 and 16, and the other clamping member 14. preparatory to it being clamped thereby. The lugs 17 and 18 further serve to provide a means by which the tension lLinder which the rope is desired to be put is facilitated, by providing a means of purchase for the rope while same is being stretched.
The other clamping member as lei consists of a movable pin 20, which is suspended or mounted in any convenient manner from the plate 10, to permit same to be moved toward the plane of the stationary members 15 and 16 when a pulling strain is exerted upon the rope, to grip the same between them. The pin 2O is mounted upon the plate 10 in a` position remote from the planeof the stationary members 15 and 16, preferably in the rear of, and between, both of said members, this arrangement of the members 15 and 16 and the pin 2O upon the plate 10 advantageously resulting in said members assuming a staggered relation to each other. The pin 20 is mounted upon the plate 10 in any convenient manner which will permit same to freely move toward and away from the plane of the members 15 and 16. The construction of the means herein shown, which serves to properly support the pin 20 and which permits this desired movement, consists of the ball and socket connection 21 which is produced by virtue of the lug 22, which extends rearwardly from Vthe plate 10. As shown, the under face of this lug may be recessed as indicated at 23, to accommodate the ball 24, provided upon the upper end of the pin 20.
The lug 22 is preferably split, as shown at 25 in F ig. 2, to permit the ball 24- of the pin 20 to be readily mounted within the recess produced therein, and securely but freely retains same vin its proper relation to the members 15 and 16 when closed upon the ball 24. Presuming that the rope is held at one of its ends and same is desired to be stretched is stretched, causing the pin from this point to several other devices, and clamped at different points, the operation is substantially as follows.:l
The free end ofthe rope will be positioned upon one of the lugs as 17 of the-device positioned at the point at which same is desired to beheld, and thenpulled until the desired tension is acq'uirec, the rope being then brought backwardly toward the pin 20 and looped around same, and then again brought forwardly to embrace the other member, as 18, as shown in Fig. 8. The pin 20 will at this time approach the planes of the members 15 and 16, and grip the rope between said members, the tension of the rope between two of the members between' which it to f continually attempt to approach the members 15 and 1G and securely hold the rope in position-,as clearly shown in Fig.Y d of the drawings.
It will be evident from the foregoing that one end' of a rope may be effectively held, by the device, as a pulling strain in onel direction only will cause the rope to be clamped and effectively held, and a pulling strain in either direction will (lso cause the same eeect.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is y 1. A clamping device comprising a plate one face of which is constructed to be placed againstA a, wall, a, pair of separated arms secured to and extending from the other face of said plate which rests againstv said wall,
and a clamping member also'extending from the last mentioned face and arranged 'to cooperate with said separated arms and mounted so. as to have sufficient movement relatively to the sameto permitthe clamping of a rope or similar article-between said member and said arms. l
2. A device of the class specified comprise ing a .plate one face of which. is adapted. to
be placed against a wall, a pair of separated arms secured to the other face of said plate and means progecting. from the last mentioned face whereby a. clamping member may be pivotall-y Connected, with said. plate and arranged to swing relatively to said arms in such a manner as to permit a clamping action between saidl member and said` arms.

means provided upon the plate which carries said clamping member whereby the clamping member is secured thereon'beyond the plate, said meansl comprising a split lug into'whi'ch the end ofthe movable member is inserted when open, and, which when closed forms a means whereby the clamping member is secured to the plate.
5. In a clamping device in combination, a plateconstructed to be secured' tov a wall, a
vpair of laterally separated arms extending from the wall plate, a clamping member se-l curedat one of its ends to the wall plate, the opp osite end being permitted to be moved between 'the laterallyv separated arms, and means whereby said clamping member is secured toy the wall plate, said meanscomprising a separable member constructed to receive the clamping member when open'and which when closed forms av means whereby the clamping member is secured to the plate. r 6. In a clamping device in combinatioma plate constructed to be secured to, a wall, a pair of laterally separated arms extending from the wall plate,l,a clamping member also secured at one 4of its ends to the wall plate, the oppositeend being permitted: to be moved between the laterally separated arms, and means provided upon the plate whereby said clamping` member is secured thereon beyond the plate, said means comprising a split lug into which the end of themovable member is inserted when open, and which when closed forms a means whereby the clamping member is secured tothe plate. u
