Description

1. HENDEE.
- STOVE LID LIFTER.
APPLICATION FILED FEB. I6, 1915.

ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO B.
HENDEE, OF MARIETTA, ILLINOIS.
' STOVE-LID LIFTER.
Application filed February 16, 1916.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, JENNIE A. HENDEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marietta in the county of Fulton and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful improvements in Stove-Lid Lifters, of which the following is a specification.
The primary objectof this invention resides in the provision of a stove lid lifter which shall be simple in construction, durable in use, well adapted for the purposes intended, and wherein the lifter may at all times be readily and easily engaged with the stove lid.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a spring for automatically moving the active ends of the lifter to an open position after the lifting operation of the lid is performed.
lVith the above and other objects in View, the invention consists in the novel features, details of construction, and combination of parts which will hereinafter be more fully set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claim.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the stove lid lifter illustrated in lid lifting action;
Fig. 2 is a similar view illustrating the lifter in inactive position;
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of one of the tongs of the lifter.
Referring more particularly to the accom panying dranvings in which like characters of reference refer to corresponding parts in the several. views designates my improved type of stove lid lifter comprisng an upper cross tong t) and a lower cross tong 7, the said upper cross tong being provided with a shank portion 8 having an elongated longitudinally disposed slot 9 for pivotally receiving the shank portion. 10 of the lowermost cross tong 7. i The lower cross tong 7 is pivotally connected within the slot 9 of the uppermost cross tong 6 through the medium of a pivotal pin 11 which passes through the side walls 12, forming the slot 9 and through the shank of the lowermost cross tone; 7 The free end of the lowermost tong, or the clamp ing end thereof at its point of intersection with the shank 10 is o-fiset laterally and bowed upwardly in opposite directions as at 13 to present an abutment shoulder 14, and as will be seen when the tongs are in Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 25, 1917.
Serial No. 78,705.
assembled position the abutment shoulder 11 upon the clamping action of the tongs will engage with the side walls 12 forming the slot 9, of the uppermost tong member 6. Each of .the tong members (5 and 7 further constitutes a handle portion 16 and 17 re- 'ments thereof. The handle 17 of the lowermost tong 7 is also slightly bowed for the full transverse extent thereof and is pro vided at its inner end with a downwardly and forwardly beveled portion 20 said portion being adapted to engage a correspondingly formed shoulder 21 of the handle 16 whereby during the completion of the lifting action of the stove lid the portion 20 will engage with the wall 21. through the medium of the spring 22 and limit the opening of the tongs whereby the active ends 15 of the tong members will be at all times retained in position to easily, quickly and accurately engage themselves with the stove lid 23. It will be apparent from the disclosure of the drawing that this spring 22 causes an automatic opening of the clamp ing ends 15 of the tongs and comprises a coiled spring having its upper end connected with the inner surface of the top portion 24 of the uppermost tong 6 and has its lowermost end 25 seated within a notch formed in the upper surface of the lowermost tong 7.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention relates. and while I have described the principles of operation of the invention together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such advantages may be made when desired as are within the scope of the claim appended hereto.
I claim:
A stove lid lifter embodying upper and lower crossed tong members, the said lower tong member being provided at its inner end with a downwardly and inwardly beveled portion, a, coil spring connected at one end with the inner wall of the upper tong member and the opposite end of said spring being seated in a notch formed in the inner wall of they lower tong member, said spring tending to automatically open the Qopi es or this patent may be obtained for clamping ends of the tong members and force the downwardly and forwardly beveled extremity of the lower tong member into engagement with a correspondingly formed shoulder on the inner extremity of the upper tong member for limiting the opening action of the tongs, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
