Fig. 9 a view similar to e of the construction in adi rent position and omitting a part of the construction shown in Fig. 8; and,
Fig. 10 an enlarged detail view of a spring-controlled dog which I employ.
In the. practice of my invention I provide a mainframe a which is U-shaped in form in cross section as shown in Fig. 5, or provided with forwardly directed top and bottom bearing membersa and a having detachable bearing caps a which form between the same and the bearing members apertures a? in which a drill b is adapted to be mounted as shown in the drawings.
The frame a is provided adjacent to. the 1 8 with parts top of the back wall thereof with an arcshaped recess a, and a plate a is secured to the frame a by bolts 0 and is provided with a similar recess 0 and the recesses a and c are adapted to receive the cross rod (Z of a yoke-shaped frame 6Z2 as clearly shown in Figs.v 2 and 5, said frame being provided with side lugs or projections d and a backwardly directed lug or projection d Pivoted to the lugs 6Z and d are telescoping legs 6 composed of separate parts 6 and 6 said parts being held in difierent positions of adjustment by screws or bolts 6 operating in connection with a plurality of indentures e in the part 6 The lower end of the part 6 of said legs is provided with a pointer 6 held in position by means of a screw or bolt 6 With the construction of the legs 6, as shown and described, the frame a. may be raised or lowered in relation to the ground or rock upon which it is placed as will be readily understood.
Adjustably mounted on the top of the main frame a is a supplemental frame f comprising an annular base portion 7 and a central upwardly directed arc-shaped portion F, the face of which is beveled as shown in Figs. 1, 5, 6 and 7 of the drawing. lhe annular base portion 7" is provided with a central aperture f through which the drill b is adapted to pass as shown in Fig. 5.
Secured to the top of the supplemental frame 7 by means of a screw is a block 9 provided with an upwardly directed recess 9 the side walls of which are arranged at an angle to the block 9 as clearly shown in Figs; 2 and 8. Pivoted to one side of the block 9 as shown at 9 Fig. 8, is a dog g v having a nose 9 and a curved shoe portion 9 which is at right angles to the body portion of the dog 9*. The dog 9 is operated in one direction by a spring g secured to the block 9 as shown at 9 Fig. 3, said dog being operated in the other direction by a wrench operating device it pivoted to theblock 9 at if, and the end of the arm 71 of which is adapted to operate in connection with the shoe portion 9 of the dog '9 as 6O 1 a and adapted to operate in connection with other way, as hereinafter described. The
arm 7& of the device 72, is provided adjacent as shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawing} The spring it serves to holdthe device h in the position shown in Fig. 9 0f the drawmg.
A wrench device 2' comprising a head member 2' and a shank portion 2' is mounted on the supplemental frame f, as shown in Figs. 2 and 5, with the jaw 71* in the head member 6 thereof inclosing the drill 79 as shown in said figure, and a spring 7' is connected with the head member 2' as shown at j and with the base portion 7 of the supplemental frame 7" as shown at j and serves to hold the wrench i, or the head member 71 thereof, in the position shown in Fig. 2.
Connected with the top and bottom of the head member 2' of the wrench i are plates 2', the edge port-ions of which adjacent to the jaw 71- are beveled as shown at 2' whereby said wrench may readily grip the drill b in the operation thereof as hereinafter described, said drill 6 being octagonin form in cross section.
Mounted on .the end of the shank portion i of the wrench device 2' is a weight 71 which serves to'hold said shank portion in connection with the recess 9 in the block 9 and to move said wrench device downwardly to permit of the engagement therewith of the dog 9 as hereinafter described. The bottom of the shank portion i of the wrench is rounded as clearly shown in Figs. 8 and 9 of the drawing and is adapted to operate in connection with the recess k in the arm 72- of the wrench operating device it.
The supplemental frame may be adjusted into four different positions, one of such positions being indicated in Figs. 1, 2 and 5 to 9 inclusive, another of said positions being that indicated in Fig. 3, inwhich position the block 9 is directly opposite to the position of said block as shown in said other figures, and said frame maybe adjusted into two positions at right angles to those shown in Figs. 1 to 9 inclusive. This adjustment ofthe supplemental frame 7 is accomplished by the provision of four equally spaced slots laadj'acent to which are four correspondingly spaced apertures k A'pin k is connected with the top of the main frame a and adapted to operate in connection with the slots k while a pin is also connected with the top of the main frame the apertures 76 this construction being clearly shown in Fig. 8 of the drawing.
A lock plate m is pivoted at-m to the top,
of the plateo, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawing, and is adapted to operate in connection with the supplemental frame to hold it firmly in contact with the main frame a. The operative position of the lock plate m is that shown in full lines in Fig. 2 and dotted lines in Fig. 3.
The operation of my improvement will be readily understood by all those skilled in the art on a consideration of the foregoing specification, the accompanying drawing and the following statement.
The normal position of the parts is that shown'in' Figs. 1, 2, 5 and 9 of the drawing, in which position the wrench device 2' rests plemental frame f'and the drill b which has been placed in position by removing the capplates a as-will be readily understood, is held in such position by the opposite top and bottom beveled faces 2' of the wrench, the shank portion 71 of said wrench being locked against movement by the nose g of the dog g 'which overlaps said shank portion, as indicated inFigs. 2 and 9 of the drawing. 5
As above stated, the. strap k may be connected with the leg of the operator, or this strap may be operated by hand to move the wrench operating device it from its normal position in the direction of the arrow at, Fig. 1, for the purpose of operating the wrench device 2' to rotate the drill and to raise said drill, as hereinafter described. Y
The position of the wrench device 2' shown in Fig; 6 and. full lines in Fig. 8 indicates the first step of accomplishing the above result, and in this position of the parts the wrench operating device 71., or the arm k thereof, has moved the dog 9 or the nose g thereof out of engagement with the shank portion of the wrench device 2', and said shank 13011101118 ralsed to bringthe wrench device mtothe posltlon shown in full lines in said figures in which position of said wrench device-the opposite top and bottom beveled portions of of the jaw i operate in connection with the opposite faces of the V The drill b and lock said drill in said jaw. continuation of the movement of the wrench operating device-h, or the movement of said device from the full line position to the dotted line'position indicated in Fig. 8 will move the .wrench device 2' upwardly into the position shown in Fig. 7 and carry the drill Z2 therewith, or move said drill b vertically in the bearings a and a of the main frame, and the still further movement of the device it in the direction of the arrow :1: will cause the wrench device 2' to drop from its the wrench operating device 72. will be moved in the stone or rockand rotating said drill Y a fraction of a revolution in said vertical movement.
I also employ a spring a which is secured to the top portion of the bearing member a as shown at n and which is adapted to operate in connection with the faces of the drill to hold said drill against rotation, in the movement of the wrench device 2' and the parts in operative connection therewith from the position shown in Fig. 7 to their normal position.
My improved drill holder by reason of its construction may be operated or manipulated in any desired place or in corners, the latter being accomplished by reason of the adjustment of the supplemental frame f which permits the shifting of the wrench operating device it into a position whereby the operator may manipulate the same without any inconvenience whatever, the telescoping legs facilitating the vertical adjustment of the frame a to permit the use of drills of varying sizes, and it will be understood that various changes in and modifications of the details of construction herein shown and described may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
t will be noted in Figs. 1 and 5 of the drawing that the legs 6 may be weighted in the usual or any desired manner, and for this purpose I have indicated at 0 in dotted lines, cylindrical blocks or similar devices for accomplishing the desired result.
