DRIVING MECHANISM FOR MAGNETOS.
1,2d1 ,13at.
Application filed March 24, 1917.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, AUGUs'rn MAilm, citizen of the Republic of France, residing at Route de Bezons, Argenteuil, Seine and ()ise, in the Republic of France, have invented new and useful Improvements in Driving Mechanisms for Magnetos, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide an improved driving mechanism for the ignition magnetos of internal combustion engines. The improved mechanism consists substantially of a hub fixed on the shaft of the magneto upon which the pinion for driving the said magneto is mounted in such a manner that it can slide thereon without rotating relatively thereto, the'arrangement being such that the axial thrust of this pinion due to the actual transmission of motion or resulting from the shocks and vibrations which this pinion receives, may be transmitted in this manner to the forward side plate of the magneto and be taken up by the said side plate instead of being transmitted to the shaft of the magneto, and consequently to the comparatively delicate internal parts of the magneto.
The accompanying drawings illustrate by way of example one form of construction of the improved mechanism for driving a magneto, according to this invention.
In these drawings Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the improved mechanism, and
Fig. 2 is a section taken through the hub along which the driving pinion is adapted to slide.
As shown in the drawings, there is mounted on the conical end A of the magneto shaft, a hub B comprising feather-keys G formed on it. Along this hub there is adapted to slide a driving bevel pinion or a driving spur pinion C which is formed with as many grooves as there are feather-keys on the hub.
The axial thrust of the driving pinion C due to the actual transmission of the motion or to the shocks and vibrations which this pinion receives, can by this arrangement be transmitted to the forward side plate of the magneto and be taken up by the said Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 25, 1917.
Serial No. 157,235.
side plate. In practice, a ball bearing D whose counter-plate I is centered on the side plate of the magneto, is arranged between the side plate and the rear end of the sleeve that carries the driving pinion C.
The centering ring E may be constituted by the side plate of the magneto, or it may be an affixed part whose contour is determined by the shape of the said side plate.
In addition, a screw-thread F is shown which has for its object to avoid any oil being drawn into tlie interior of the magneto, and which allows of returning this oil on its way to the casing.
It is to be understood that the herein described mechanism may be employed with any type of magneto and irrespective of the speed of the magneto, relatively to the engine.
Having now described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In driving mechanism for ignition magnetos, the combination with a side plate of the magneto, of the magneto shaft having a portion projecting beyond the side plate, a hub fixed to the projecting portion of the shaft, and a sleeve slidable longitudinally upon but not rotatable about said hub, one end of said sleeve being adapted to exert its thrust against the side plate and the other end of said sleeve carrying a driving pinion.
2. In driving mechanism for ignition magnetos, the combination with a side plate of the magneto, of the magneto shaft having a portion projecting beyond the said side plate, a hub fixed to the projecting portion of the shaft, a sleeve slidable longitudinally upon but not rotatable about said hub, said sleeve having a pinion at one end thereof and a flange at the other end substantially parallel to the said side plate, and ball bearings interposed between said flange and side plate.
3. A driving mechanism for ignition magnetos comprising in combination: the shaft of the magneto, a hub fixed on this shaft and provided with feather-keys formed on its periphery, a sleeve mounted upon this hub and provided with grooves corresponding with the feather-keys of the Tn testimony whereof I have signed my huh, a. driving pinlon fixed to this SiOOVO, name to H115 specification II] the presence of the folwvnrd SHiO date of the'mu neto and two suhserihlm witnesses.
:l' ball hearing interposed between the rear AUGUSTE MAIRE. end of the said sleeve and the said forward wltnesses: slde plate of the magneto, substantially as Louis MOSES,
described and for the purpose set forth. Cum v I. PRESSLY.
