HAND-BAG.
To all 'wwm t may concern:
Be it known that l, ABRAHAM KULICK,
- a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and lmproved Hand-Bag, of which the following is a full, clear, and eXact description.
The invention relates to hand bags having draw strings for closing purposes and which form carrying handles for the bag.
rlhe object of the invention is to provide a new and improved hand bag arranged to allow of holding the mouth of the bag in open position for the insertion of articles within or their removal from the bag, and to permit of conveniently opening and closing the bag without danger of the draw strings becoming entangled or tearing the material at the mouth of the bag body. Another object is to strongly reinforce the ends of the bag.
In order to accomplish the desired result, use is made of a bag body made of a soft pliable material and having an open mouth, reinforcing plates inserted in the ends of the bag body and extending a distance downward from the upper edge of the mouth of the bag, the said plates having guide openings, and closing means such as draw strings engaging the mouth of the bag body and the said guide openings to permit of closing the mouth of the bag.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the hand bag with the parts shown in open position;
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same withl the parts in closed position; and
Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional plan view of the same on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
rlhe bag body is made of a suitable fabric material, such as silk, leather or the like, and the bag body is formed of a front 10, a back 11 and inserts 12 connecting the edges of the front 10 and the back 11 with each other by the employment of suitable stitches or the like. The inserts 12 terminate at their upper ends a distance below the upper ends of the front 10 and the back 11 to provide openings or cut-out portions between the corresponding upper free edges of the front Speccaton of Letters Patent. PatemtwIll Steph. lill, 11917.. Application led April 10, 1917.
Serial No. 160,971.
10 and theback 11 and the upper edges of the inserts 12. Into the cut-out portions or openings lit metallic plates 14;, 15 which preferably terminate at their upper ends a short distance below the top edges ofv the front 10 and the back l1, as plainly indicated in Fig. 1. Each of the plates 141 and 15 is provided with reduced sides and bottoms 1G having apertures engaged by stitches 17 also engaging the free edges of the front 10 and the back 1.1 and the upper edges of the inserts 12 to securely fasten the plates le and 15 in position. A slight outward curvature is preferably given to the plates lfl so that the latter conform to the general construction of the bag to enhance the appearance thereof. The metallic plates 141 and 15 may be provided with the owners initials. In order to hide or cover up the stitches 17 on the outer faces of the plates 14 and 15, use is preferably made of a trimming 2O of braid or other suitable material sewed along the joints of the front 10, the back 11 and the inserts 12. rlhe trimming 2O overlies the reduced portions 16 of the plates lll and 15 so that the reduced portions 16 are not visible.
In order to close the hand bag, use is made of double draw strings 30 and 31 engaging loops or rings 32 attached to the inner faces of the front 10 and the back 11 a distance from the upper edges thereof, and the said draw-strings engage openings or eyelets 33 and 34 formed one alongside the other in the upper portions of the metallic plates 14: and l 15. The outer ends of the draw strings 30 aud 31 are formed into loops to provide suitable handles for carrying the bag. When the bag is in the open position shown in Fig. 1 and the user exerts an outward pull on the outer ends of the draw strings 30 and 31 then the mouth of the bag is moved into closed position with the upper ends of the metallic plates moving in contact with each other thus insuring a firm closing of the mouth of the bag. As the plates 14 and 15 terminate below the tops of the front 10 and the back 11 the upper portions thereof are gathered into ornamental shape to enhance the appearance of the bag, as plainly Having thus described my invention, l
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentz A hand bag, comprising a bag body having,` an open mouth and formed of' a HeXible material, the bag body having a front, a back, inserts connecting the lower portions of the front and back with each other, the inserts having` their upper ends terminating a distance below the tops of the said front and back to form spaces between the uppeil portions oi 'the -front and back, reinforcing; plates of non-flexible material and fitting into the spaces formed between the free side edges of the Saidvfront and back and the. Lipper edges of the inserts, and having guide openings in their upper portions, stitches eomeating` thel side edges and bottoms of the said plates with the said side edges of the front and back and the upper edges of the inserts, guide rings secured along the front and back around the said mouth of the bag, and draw strings extending through the plate openings and through the said guide rings.
