Batt-1e Creek, in the county of Calhoun and- 5 State of Michigan, have invented certain new ,and useful Improvements in Rotary 'IVeb-Printing Presses; and I hereby declare that the following is a full,- clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanyin drawings, which form part of this speci cation.
This invention relates to rotary web printing presses, itslobject being to providea-web printing press of large capacity; capable of produclng a great variety of product according to the 'sizeof the paper desired; which can `be used for printing in one color or in multicolor; and in which the several Webs after being printed may, if desired, all be assembled at one folder or assembled at diii'erent folders, according tothe size and num- -ber of the papers which it is desired to print. Also to make such press compact, and yet have all the parts thereof readily accessible. The invention is particularly adapted for newspaper work and the press is especially' designedl for using tubular single-pagestereotype plates, such as shown in my Reissue Patent No. 13,129 of July 12,1910.
The invention, furthermore, is an improvement upon the type of presses shown in my application for patent on frotary cylinder printing press, filed September 12, 1912, 'Serial No. 719,967.
I will explain the invention more fully with #reference to the v'accompanying drawingsy and summarize yin the clalms the es-l sential novel features, combinations, and arrangement of parts for which protection 40 is desired. 1

F1g. 5 is a similar View looking at the right hand end of the press as shown= in F i. 2. s shown, the press has a central large impression cylinder 1, with which coperate six plate cylinders 2 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7, each of which plate cylinders is provided with suitable inking mechanisms, indicated at I2, I3, I4, I?, I6 and I7, each inking mechanism comprlslng form rollers, distributin and vibrating rollers, and an ink fountain, as Will be readily understood by 'press builders. In the example shown 'each plate cylinder is short and adapted to-carry but two tubular plates, such as described in my patent aforesaid. The impression cylinder l is four plates long and therefore the two upper plate'cylinders 5 and 6 and the two lower plate cylinders 2 and 3 are preferably arranged adjacent one end of the impression cylinder 1; while the plate cylinders 4 and 7 are arranged adjacent the other end of the cylinder 1, as indicated in Fig. 2, to enable a four page wide web to-be printed as hereinafter explained. The plate cylinders are suitably journaled and supported in the frame of the press, not shown, so that tubular plates may be ,slipped endwise onto and overI outer ends of the plate cylinders, from the sides of the press, as explained in my aforesaid patent'and application.
My object 1n using short plate cylindersv end of the plates, unless specifically mentionedl in' the Y claims, as-it would bepractical to utilize substantial and important parts and features of the inventionand employ plate cylinders carrying `ordinary semi-cylindric stereotype plates.
At opposite sides of the central group of printing mechanisms described, are arranged two groups of printing mechanisms;
each group, in the example shown, comprispression cylinder 1b and coacting plate cylinder 4a; above which are an impression ycylinder 1c and coacting plate cylinder 5a.
Similarly at the opposite or left hand end of the' press are a lower impression'cylmder 1d coacting with a plate cylinder 2a; above these an impressioncylinder 1"` and coacting plate cylinder 7a; and above these an impression cylinderJ 1f and coacting plate cylinder 6a.

. 7 a is preferably adapted to carry single page tubular plates; but the related coacting impression cylindersare preferably larger in diameter, or of the usual size, as above stated. The plate cylinders might be made to carry semi-cylindric page plates instead of the tubular page plates.

^ are parallel with and in web alinement with their respective related plate cylinders 2, 3, 5, 6; and the plate cylinders 4a, 7 a are in web alinement with their respective related plate cylinders 4 and 7 Therefore, the cyllnders land 7a are arranged parallel with cylinders 4 and 7, adjacent one side of the press, While the other plate cylinders 2, 3, 5, 6`-are arranged adjacent thel other side s of the press. Each of the plate cylinders 2, 38,43, 5, 6a, 7zal isV provided with a suitable inlnng mechanism (as indicated at 712, i3, 1l, i5, i, 7) which supplies ink thereto, and is of well known construction and will be readily understood by pressmen. p
The press is provided wlth suitable guides r for directing theseveral webs and portions of webs from the web supply rolls W, W, W2, through the press, as hereinafter explained. Above each printing mechanism at the right` hand side of the press is an angle bar, hereinafter referred to, whereby the printed web may be directed out of the press; and below each printing mechanism at the left hand side of the press is an angle bar whereby'the printed webs-may vbe directed out ofthe press, as hereinafter described. Also above the left hand set of cylinder 3 and impression cylinder 1; and printed on one side; said web is then carried past guide rollers a5, a", a7, to and between the impression cylinder 1*1 and plate cylinder 3a, and then over guide rollers as, a9, to an' angle bar A over which it is turned and directed outside of the press to a second angle bar 8, or 8, over whichD it can be' thence over roller b* to an angle bar B yanddefiected to the side of the machine, and can be turned over angle vbar 11,'or/11a; and then directed over-suitable guides b, b" to the roller D, and thence into the lfolder 9, or 9a.
The web from roll W may be led over a guide c where it is split by splitter S. v Onehalf of this web then passes over ides c', c2, c3, c, to and between plate cylin er 4 and impression cylinder 1; thence the web is led over guides c5, c to and between vimpression cylinder 1b and plate cylinder 4a; .thence over guides c7, 0B to angle bar A by which itis directed out o f the machine to an angle bar 8", or 8, (lying above the angle bars 8, 8a and parallel therewith), and thence passes over rollers c, 01, 011, 012 to roller D, and to Veither folder 9, or 9a. l
The other -half of the web from roll W, passes from roller c up over guides d past uides d', cl2, and between impression cylin er 1 and plate cylinder 5; thence over guides d3, d4, to and between impression cylinder 1c and plate cylinder 5a; thence'l over guides d5, d, to angle barAz, by which. the web is directed to one side of the Inachine to an angle bar 8f", or 8f, (parallel with the angle bars 8, 8a) and thence the web is passed over guide rollers (Z7, d8, d", to the roller D, land into the folder 9, or 9a.
The web from the roll W 2 at the other end ofthe machine passes over a roller e, where it is splitby splitter S2; and one-- half of this web passes over guides e', e2, e3, to and between-the plate cylinder7 and im? pression cylinder 1; and'thence over guide e4 to and between impression cylinder 1e and plate cylinder 7a; thence over guide e5 to an angle bar B by which it is directed out of the machine to an'angle bar 11b, or 11, (above angle bars 11 and 11a), by which it is again deflected, and thence the web passes over guides e6, etto the rollerl D, into the folder 9, or 9 f Vbar B2'by which it is directed out of the machine to an angle bar 11d, .or 11, (paralby which the web is directed toward the folder, and it passes over guides f, f7, to the roller D and in`to folder 9, or 9a.
It will be seen by reference to therdrawing that each web or part of web isperfected in its passage through the machine; one side of such web being printed by a printing couple adjacent the web roll, and the other side of such web being 'printed by the cenwide plate cylinder.

I herein use the term side of the press` with reference tol the greater length of the press; taking the greatest length of the press as its longest diameter, and for convenience considering the` web rolls. as being located at the ends of such press. y
Assuming, for the purpose of description, that each lplate cylinder is but two pages long and each web roll isl four pages long, itY will be seen that with the ypress illustrated in the drawings I am able to print three four page wide webs simultaneously; and can. assemble all the printed webs, at either folder 9 or 9a; or can assemble any desired number of webs or portions 'of webs at either folder. The press Shown can print ,two similar sized papers simultaneously; or lcan print two different sized pa-pers simultaneously, up to the full page capacity of the press..
Mum-color. The press threaded as shown in Fig. 1 is l adapted-to printan'd'perfect the threewebs only 1n one color. The press can be readily threaded so as to print one or more webs in colors, as will be obvious to pressmen; merely as an example I have shown in Fig. 3- how one two page Wide web could be kprinted in four colors on each side in the press shown. With this arrangement it will be seen that av two page wide web can be, perfected,` i f desired, in black and vthree colors during one passage through the machlne. It will be obvious to pressmen that additional webs might bey printed and per-v fected in a less number of colors if desired; but it is unnecessary to attempt to explain herein all the possible methods of threading the press for multi-color work.

In a rotary printing press, the combination of an impression cylinder, a plurality of laterally dis laced plate cylinders coacting therewit adjacent opposite ends thereof, a plurality of 'printing couples arranged at opposite sides of the said'vcylinder, and means for directing webs through the individual printing couples and between the impression cylinder and the related coacting plate cylinders.
2. In a rotary printingpress, the combination of a centrally disposed impression cylinder, a plurality of laterally displaced plate cylinders eoacting therewith adjacent opposite ends thereof, a plurality of printing couples Aarranged at opposite sides of the said cylinder, means for directing webs through individual printing couples and between the impression cylinder and the col acting related plate cylinders to perfect the 30 Webs.

In a rotary printing press, the combination of an impression cylinder and a plurality of plate cylinders co-acting therewith, the plate cylinders being shorter than 'the impression cylinder and located adjacent opposite ends thereof; with a plurality of laterally displaced printing couples at one side of said cylinders, the plate cylinwebs may be led from the laterally dis- 'I placed printing couple to the related plate cylinder co-actmg with the said impression cylinder, a folding mechanism adjacent the printing mechanisms, and angle bars whereby the webs after being perfected may be turned and directed to the folding mechanism.
23. In a rotary printing press, the combination of an impression cylinder and a plurality of plate cylinders co-acting therewith,` the plate cylinders being shorter than the impression cylinder and located ad'acent opposite ends thereof; with a plurality of laterally displaced printinv couples at one side of said cylinders the p ate cylinders in said printing couples being located parallel with the related platelcylinders co-acting with the said impression cylinder so that webs may be led from thc laterally displaced printing couples to the related plate cylinders co-acting with the large impression cylinder; folding mechanism, and -means whereby the webs after being perfected may be directed to the folding mechanism.
