Be it known that we, JoHN P. ARNETT and JAMES T. FAIRGHILD, citizens of the United States, residing at Salyersville, in the county of Magoiiin, State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Club; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The present invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in clubs such as are commonly employed by policemen and other ofiicers of the law for use in overcoming any resistance which might be offered to the making of an arrest or other proper exercise of their authority, the obj ect of the invention being to provide a club of this character which embodies novel features of construction whereby it can not be snatched or forcibly pulled from the hand of the officer. i

Further objects of the invention are to provide a club of this character which is comparatively simple and inexpensive in its construction, which can be used in the same manner as an'ordinary club, which iscon- Y structed so that sharp points will automatically be projected from the sides of the club should any attempt be made to grasp the club and pull it from the hand of the officer, and which is so constructed that it can be easily assembled and taken apart.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel combinations and arrangements of the parts as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the novel features thereof being pointed out in the appended claims.

reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view through a club constructed in accordance with the invention, thepins being shown in a retracted position.

Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the club with the pins in. a projected position, portions being broken away and shown in section to illustrate more clearly the details of construction.

Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the `line 3-3 of Fig. 1.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.

Specifically describing the present embodiment of the invention, the numeral l designates the handle, and 2 the stock of the club which is carried by the handle, but which has a limited sliding movement toward and away therefrom. The stock 2 is divided longitudinally into two interchangeable and complemental sections or halves 2a which are adaptedl to be assembled from opposite sides, one side of each of the halves being provided with a series of small positioning pins 3 which are adapted to engage corresponding` openings l in the other half to bring the two halves or sections accurately together when they are assembled. The outer end of the stock 2 is formed with a threaded stud 5, half of which is carried by each of the sections 2, said threaded stud 4 being engaged by a cap 6 which assists in holding the stock sections 2EL together and provides a suitable tip for the club. fr sleeve 'Z' is fittedupon the inner end of the stock 2a, being held removably in position by a suitable fastening member S, and projecting beyond the end of the stock so as to telescope over the end of the handle l.

The interior of the stock 2 is formed with a longitudinal bore or recess 9 within which a pair of opposed pin carrying bars 10 are mounted for in and out movement toward and away from each other. Each of these bars 10 is provided with a series of pins 11 which project outwardly therefrom and are loosely received within radial openings in the side walls of the stoel: 2, said openings being conveniently formed by corresponding notches or grooves l2 in the meeting faces of the sections 2a of the stock. The points of the pins are normally retracted and sheathed within the radial openings of the stock so that they are inoperative and do not interfere with the use of the club in the customary manner.

A rod 13 which has one end thereof screwed or otherwise rigidly anchored in the handle 1, as indicated at 14, extends axially through the stock 2 and is arranged herent resiliency of these V-shaped spring strips 15 normally tends both to draw the pin carrying bars inwardly and to hold the stock 2 against the handle 1. However, should the stock 2 be forcibly pulled away from the handle 1, the arms of the V-sha-ped springs 15 will be flexed apart, and the pin carrying bars forced outwardly, thereby cansino' the points of the pins 11 to be projected lieyond the sides of the stock 2. The togglelaction of the tl-shaped springs 15 is due to the relative movement between the rod 18 and pin carrying` bars 10, the latter being movable with the stock 2, while the rod is fixed to the handle 1. The automatic projection of the points of the pin 11 when the stock 2 is forcibly pulledl away from the handle 1, would cause any person who might have grasped the stock 2 to quickly release the same, and any effort to snatch the club from the hand of the officer would thus be frustrated.

The inner end of the stock 2 is shown as provided with a pair of guide plungers 16 which are arranged upon opposite sides of the rod 13 and have a parallel relation there vto, said guide plungers being slidably received within corresponding openings 17 in the handle 1. rlhese plungers 16 may be constructed with heads 16u and have the ends thereof ttedwithin corresponding re` cesse@ 18 in the meeting faces of the stock sections 2a. The various parts of the club are ordinarily held securely in operative position, although it will be obvious that by unscrewing the cap G and removing the sleeve 7 the two coinpleinental sections 2 of the stock can be separated and the club taken apart. The club has the same general appearance as the ordinary club and is intended to be used in the saine manner as the ordinary club, with the pins 11 held in an inoperative position unless an attempt is made to forcibly pull the club from the hands 0f the officer, in which event 'thepins tudinallyinto interchangeable complemental will be automatically projected into 'operative position so as to cause the quick release of the club by any hand which may have grasped theouter end thereof.

Having thus described the invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is v 1.
