CLAYTON SEYMOUR; OF BURLINGTON, VERMONT.
GAS-ENGINE TESTER.
Specification of Letters fatent.
Patented Sept. 11; 19137.
Application filed May 9,1916. Serial No. 96,297.
To all whom it mizycoaccm:
Bait, known that I, CLAYTON SEYMOURI' a citizen oftheUn'ite'd States, residing at'Burlington', in the c unty" of Chittenden and State of Verm nt; have invented certain 'n'e-w and-useful Improvements in Gas-En- -gine Testers,"-o'f which the'following is a My *nvemiomerates to improvements in automobile applian'cesf and relates particu larly to"asparkplug tester whereby the operator or owner-of an automobile or' similar I vehicle may always haveatihand means for determining whetliei' or not the spark plugs of the internal combustionengine are in proper" condition";
An object of myfinv entionis theprovision of'a'sparkl'plug tst' er which wi'll' tell at once Whether the spark -plug" isworking and the amount offsparkwhi'ch the plug is-giving. 1
A further IObjectof invention is the provision "of a spark-plug tester which will be small in size; whichwiill be cheap ofprofduction; and whichwill be durable and un- With' the above and other "objects in view which will 'appe'ar fas" the description procee'ds, theinven'tioii consists in the novel con struction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereina ftr'fdescribed' and claimed; it being understoo'd'that changes in-the precise embodiment" of i the invention herein disclosed canbe made without departing from the spirit of the invention In" the accompanying drawings I have illustrated one completcxample of the physical embodiment of my invention con structed according to'the best mode I have so far (lQWlSGd forthepractical application of the principles of my invention.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of my invention showing its application, and
F ig': 2 is a central sectlonal view thereof. Corresponding and-llkeparts are referred toin' the"following description and indi cated in all'the "views of 'tlie accompanying drawin'gby the same reference characters.
In the accompanying drawing, I have used the referencenumeral l to inflicate generally a spark'plug which maykbe' ofthe ordinary construction 'provided'j' with ordinary screw threaded'wireorrod'at its outer end to re ceive a nut-2, the spark plug being-secured in the cylinder 3.
My improvement comprises a body l made of fiber or other suitable insulating material which may bereadily molded. The body 4:
is preferably yoke shape and is provided with a pair of depending arms 5, one of the arms 5 having at its end the terminal or contact point 6 having's'ecured thereto the wire 6 which passes up throughthe arm to the sight opening 7 formed in the hand grasping portion 8 of thebody 4., and the other arm has slidably mounted therein the contact pin '9 as will be hereinafter more clearly setforth.
The contact pin or stud 9'is mounted in the opening 10 in the longer of the arms 5,-
and has the spiral spring 11 to bear thereon so -,as to give the proper contact when in use. To prevent the pin 9 from becoming detached from the arm, I employ the stud 12 projecting into the opening 10 and engaging theslot 13 in the stud.
The spring 11 has its lower end soldered to the pin 9 and its upper end soldered to the wire 14 which is secured to the threaded bushing 15, in which is mounted the threaded adjusting screw 16, said adjusting screw having its winged portion 16 made of rubher or other insulating material to prevent the operator from becoming shocked when perfect contact, and that the current passes through the wires 6 and 17 by means of the contact point 6 and the contact pin 9.
After placing the device as stated above, the screw 16 is adjusted until the spark gap 18 formed by the ends of the wires 6 and 17 about of an inch in size, and if the spark plug is working a spark will be readily apparent through the sight opening 7.
By my device it is seen whether the spark plug is working and if so the strength of the spark as will be readily understood by all who are skilled in the art to which this invention .appertains.
Thus it will be understoodthat I provide tool box; one that will be papable of ready application so as to ascertain which spark A spark plug tester, consisting of a yoke forming a hand grasping portion and a pair of arms, a visible spark gap or sight opening in said hand grasping portion, contact points in each of said arms, one of said con.-
tact points being rigid and the other slidably mounted, a spi a1 spring bearing against said shdable contact point a steel 'busblng in one end of said hand grasping portion, a wire connecting said spring and bushing, an adjustable screw mounted in said bushing, and a wire carried by said screw whereby the space between the end of the said wire and the wire leading from said rigid contact point may be adjusted.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
