Be it known that we, HERBERT D. BADER and James CLARENCE lVAssuLL, citizens of the United States, residing at the city of vented certain new and useful Improvements in Pack-Saddleaof. wh ch the followingis a specification.
@ur invention relates topack saddles, and
more particularly to a device of that character adapted to be mounted upon a packanimal for transportation of a machine gun and a tripod and ammunition therefor.
The object of the invention is the provision of a saddle which combines the minimum of weight with the maximum of rigidity, and consequent durability.
A further object of the invention 15 the provision of a. device of this nature embodying carriers so constructed as to practically eliminate any undesired movement of the articles carried thereby.
A preferred embodiment of our inventlon is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,

Referring. specifically to the drawings, in which similar reference numerals indicate like parts throughout the several views, it will be noted that the framework of the sad dle comprises a top, normally horizontally disposed, rectangularcarrier A, fromwhich depend, upon eithersicle, two downwardly extending curved arms, comprising the carriersB and C. r
The carrier A is constructed of"two*sectionsof angular bars providing thesidewalls 1 and 2, and the floor members 3 and 1. Each end of the said floormembers and 4 is. cutaway, and the ends of the side walls Missouri, have in of the saddle l and 2 bent at an angle to the body of'said wallsso as to contact the sides of said cut away portions of the floor members 3 and 4-, to form the endwalls 5, 6, 7 and 8, as will be understood. i
The floor members 3 and lare securely riveted to two parallel angle bars 9 and 10, as shown in Fig. 2, thereby forming the complete carrier A.
Depending from each of the angle bars 9 and 10 is an integral bracing member 11,11. These members are identical in structure and one only need be described, but certain of the braces may, if desired, be set slightly out of alinement with its associated brace, so as to better adapt the carrier for transportation of machine gun tripods of certain sizes. Said brace 11 is of angle construction, as-before stated, and is therefore provided with a flange 12; In the formation of the braces 11, 11 the angle sections are first notched at the center and then bent until the notched portions are in alinement and form a flat surface 13. This surface is positioned against or-adjacent the horizontal flange 14-, 15 of the bars 9 and 10, and securely riveted to the vertical flange thereof, as clearly shown, partly in dotted lines in Fig. 4. llfilanifestly, since the parts are riveted in this position, no relative movementis possible between the carrier A and the braces 11, 11. To impart increased rigidity to the carrier A, we provide the diagonally extending braces 16 and 17. These braces may be riveted together at their meeting point, and at either end are secured to the floor members 3 and l, and to the flanges 14- and 15 of the bars 9 and 10.
The carriers B and C are of identical formation, and a description of one onlyis necessary. The carrier B is provided by two metal rods 18 and 19, preferably of semi-circular cross section, as shown in Fig. 6. Said rods are identical in construction, and are preferably provided with an upper flat portion 18, see Fig. 6, adapted for attachment to the brace 17, to the flange 15, and tothe floor member 1:. The rod is thence extended downwardly, thence bent outwardly, and thence curved downwardly and upwardly, where it is bent backwardly upon itself to form a loop. 20, thence extending; downwardly, forming a rigid brace 21 which is riveted to the flanges 12, 12 of the braces 11.
11. The details ofrods l8 and 19 are clearly shown in Figs. 2, description should be unnecessary.
As is indicated in Figs. 2, 4c and 5, angle members 22, 22, provided with flanges 23, 23, rest upon the flanges 12, 12 and are riveted to the vertical flanges of the braces 11, 11. The rods 18, 19 are riveted to the flanges 23, 23, the parts being so proportioned that, when so connected the top surfaces of the rods 18 and 19 will lie in a plane slightly above the top of the vertical flanges of the.
braces 11, 11, as shown in Fig. 4, and for a purpose to be hereinafter described.
A wooden block D extends between the parallel legs of the bracing members 11, 11, and is suitably riveted to the flanges 12, 12
thereof. Secured to said block D is a pad: or .mattress E, to protect the pack-animal from injury.
As a part of the harness equipment we provide the strap 2 L having D-rings at either end for connection with the breast strap F, and the breeching strap G. To the bar 9 is secured a D-ring 25 for attachment t0 the hold-back H of the harness, and to the bar 10 is secured a similar ring 26 for attachment to the neck strap I or bridle rein The lower ends of the flanges 12, 12 are extended and rolled, at 26, 26, to form an eye for the D-rings 27, 27 for attachment to the girths' K, K.
For detachably securing the articles in the carrier, we provide the following equipment. The upper ends of the rods 18 and 19 are bent to form the eyes for the attachment ofthe D-rings 28, 28. Straps L, L are attached at one end to the loops 20, 20, and are adapted to extend to the D-rings 28, 28. It will be understood that, as shown in Figs. 1 40.

The carrier A is adapted to support the ammunition boxes for the gun. As at present constructed these boxes are flat and:
somewhat elongated, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, and, in the construction shown, said carrier is adapted to hold four of these boxes.-
Obviously, however, the size and capacity of the carrier may be varied at will. Riveted to the bar 10 is a flat bar 31 carrying hook member-s32, 32, and to the bar 9 is riveted a bar 33. The angle members 22, 22 cause the surfaces of the rods 18 and 19 to be raised above the planes of the fiangesll, 11, as before stated, so that, in the movements of the pack-animal, the gun or tripod, or the cas ings thereof, .will always rest upon the rounded surfaces of said rods, and will not be injured by contact with the rough, com-1. paratively sharp surfacesof the topof the flanges 11, 11.
For the purpose of strength and durabil ity the carrier A and the brace members 11, 30 11, as well asthe rods 18 and 19, are each formed of a single piece of metal, such as: iron or steel. We recognize the fact, how
ever, that when the device isnot to. be subj ected to heavy usage, a lighter material 851 might be used without departing from thespirit and scope of our invention. i
In devices of this particular character," strength and rigidity are essential, consistent with the load which the pack-animal is 90. able to carry. It isto be noted that the load rests upon the blocks D, and the weight of: the boxes would naturally tend to spread the lower ends of the braces 11, 11. .This is practically impossible, however, without rupture of the rivets which fasten the braces. to the bars 9 and 10, or of the'braces above saidrivets. Furthermore, the. rods 18 and 19 which support the gun and tripod are also ell'ective brace members, since they form a;10.0 rigid connection between each corner of the carrier A and the corresponding leg of the bracingmembers 11,11. WVe have shown and described a preferred form of our invention, but desire to secure" by Letters Patent all such embodiments and modifications thereof as fall fairly within" the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described. our invention, what we claim and desire to secure by LettersPatent is:
1. A device of the character described comprising ahorizontal, rectangularly shaped package carrier provided with flanges ar-" ranged to constitute a supporting surface for the package, and other flanges al ranged at a right angle to the first-mentioned flanges to provide end and side walls 1 preventing transverse orlongitudinal move ment of the package with respectto the our rier, and a downwardly extending curvedil25 package carrier suspended from each side of said horizontal carrier, substantially as package carrier provided with flanges arranged to constitute a supporting surface for the package, and other flanges arranged at a right angle to the first-mentioned flanges to provide end and side walls preventing transverse or longitudinal movement of the package with respect to the carrier, a downwardly extending curved package carrier suspended from each side of said horizontal carrier, and bracing elements connected to said horizontal carrier and said curved carriers, substantially as described.
3. A device of the character described comprising a horizontal rectangularly shaped package carrier provided with angularly related side and end walls, a downwardly extending package carrier, having an upwardly curved lower end, suspended from each side of said horizontal carrier, primary bracing elements connected to said horizontal carrier and to said downwardly extending carrier, and supplemental braces extending from the lower ends of said downwardly extending carriers to said bracing elements, substantially as described.
4- A device of the character described comprising a horizontal package carrier, bracing elements connected thereto, a plurality of downwardly extending package carriers connected to said horizontal carrier and provided with upwardly extending, article-supporting arms, and rigid members extending between the upper ends of said arms and said bracing elements, substantially as described.
5. A device of the character described comprising a horizontal package carrier, bracing elements connected thereto, and a supplemental package carrier suspended from each side of the horizontal carrier and secured to said bracing elements, said supplemental carriers being curved outwardly and upwardly from said bracing elements and thence turned downwardly to provide supplemental braces connected with said bracing elements, substantially as described.
6. A device of the character described comprising a horizontal package carrier, bracing elements connected therewith, and
.a supplemental package carrier suspended from each side of said horizontal carrier and connected to said bracing elements, andsupplemental braces extending to said bracing elements to support said supplemental carriers, substantially as described.
7. A device of the character described comprising a horizontal package carrier, an inclined supplemental package carrier con nected at each side thereof, and bracing elements connected to each of said carriers, the upper portion of each supplemental carrier forming abrace between the horizontal carrier and said elements and the lower portion thereof forming braces extending to said elements to support said supplemental carriers, substantially as described.
8. A device of the character described comprising a horizontal package carrier, a plurality of arms extending therefrom and forming supplemental package carriers, and bracing elements connected to said arms and to said horizontal carrier, said arms being turned backwardly near their ends to provide supplemental braces connected to the lower ends of said bracing elements, substantially as described.
9. A device of the character described comprising a frame having a top member and inclined sides, and a plurality of downwardly extending arms connected to the top member and sides of the said frame and forming package carriers, the lower ends of said arms extending at an angle to said sides and being turned backwardly and fastened to said sides to form supporting braces for said carriers, substantially as described.
10. A device of the character described comprising a frame provided with a top member and inclined sides, and a plurality of downwardly extending arms suspended from said top member and connected to said sides, the top surfaces of said arms extending slightly above the top surfaces of the sides, said arms forming package carriers, substantially as described.
lluA device of the character described comprising a frame provided with a top member and with inclined side members having vertical flanges, a plurality of clownwardly extending arms suspended from said top member and forming package carriers, portions of said arms extending parallel to said vertical flanges, and projections on said flanges to hold the upper surfaces of said arms in a plane above the upper surfaces of said vertical flanges, substantially as described.
12. A device of the character described comprising a frame provided with a top member and with inclined side members having vertical flanges, a plurality of downwardly extending arms suspended from said top member and forming package carriers, a portion of each of said arms extending pa 'allel to said vertical flanges, and members attached to said flanges and to said arms to hold the upper surfaces of the arms above the plane of the upper surfaces of said flanges, substantially as described.
13.
