Application filed August a, 1am. Serial 1%. 11am.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Joan Armmno, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have invented a, certain ne and useful Improvement in Door-Bumpers, and declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of: this specification.
This invention relates to door bumpers and has for its object a door bumper cheap to manufacture, eifective in operation, and of great durability. The last-mentionedend is,
accomplished by reasonof the arrangement for protecting the rubber element and at the same time preventing any material distortion of the same.
In the-drawings,+-
Figure l isa side elevation of the bumper and thestrilner; j 3
Fig. 2 is a horizontal cross section. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the rubber ele ment.
Flg. l is an elevation of the spring strip whic protects the block of rubber.
a designates a die-cast shell open at the rear as shown in Fig.2, closed at the top, in-
. side and bottom sides, and closed on the'face or front as shown in Fig. l, with the exception of a semi-circular opening 15. Within this die-cast shell fits tightly the rubber block 0 detailed in Fig. 3. The block is provided with a body portion having a semi circular recess and having a crescent-shaped boss, d which protrudes from the shell when the block is in place as indicated in Fig. 1. In the semi-circular recess of the block and a' ent thereto fits the spring protecting strip a The rubber about the recessprotrades about i toward the door forming lips a, a which prevent the door slamming against the jamb in case of the striker being taken off temporarily or not operating properly for any reason.
The striker ,F is attached to the door edge by one screw which parallels the door andgoes through the striking portion of the striker, and two screws g which screw into the step-like portion which is out in the door.
The die-cast shell a is providedwith thickened portions h at the inside corners to take the screws, which are four in number, and which screw the same to the door puller.
The important features of construction which require emphasis are the almost total absence of space between the rubber block and the shell, preventing the distortion of the rubber, and allowing the engagement of the bumper on not only top and bottom of the striker but on the nose of the striker. In the prior art a striker of somewhat similar design has been employed, but the method of ,;l1olding it has been to employ distortable rubber elements which engage it on the top and bottom and are distorted by it as the striker slidingly passes these distortable ele ments inward. It has, however, been found that the life of such bumpers is very short.
Not only that, but the striker can roclr upon .while at the same time avoiding any possible rocking movement of the door.
The spring strip lining the face of the bumper avoids friction between the rubber bumper and the striker and at the same time protects the rubber from wear and tear.
What I claim is: I
A bumper, having in combination, a shell having on its side facing the door 0 ening a semi-circular opening, a rubber b ock fitted into the shell and provided with a semi-circular recess of less diameter than the sen1icircular opening of the shell and said block having a crescent shaped bo'ss around the recess in the block and that protrudes through the shell, the ends of the crescent protruding beyond the end of the block, and a striker having a semicircular striking nose adapted to fit into the semicircular recess in the block.
In testimony whereof, I sign this specification.
JOHN T. ALLMAND.
