HEEL-CUTTING APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed November 20, 1916. Serial No. 132,486.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it'known that l, "WILLIAM J. Nnsirr, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Los Angeles, county of Los Angeles, State of California, have invented a certain new and useful l-leel-Cutting Apparatus, and l do hereby declare the following tobe a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine. f
This invention relates to heel cutting apparatus, more particularly to a modification in the construction of the apparatus which is disclosed in my application for patent filed October 9, 1916, Ser. No.y 124,725.
The preferredoform of the modified construction willbe understood by those skilled in the art by a careful consideration of the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the modified heel cutting apparatus Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view taken on the line 2--2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an' enlarged broken sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig.
`1; Fig. 4 is an enlarged plan view takenl on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a side elevational view of the heel clamping device; Fi g. 6 is a side elevational view of a portion of the heel clamping device; Fig. 7 is` a plan view of the same; Fig. 8 is a plan view of the platel which carries the heel clamping device; and Fig. 9 is a front elevational view of the same.
Referring to the drawings, the upright frame 10 is provided with forwardly eX- tending arms 11 and 11 on which is mounted the stationary pivot shaft 12. On the latter is pivotally mounted the table 13 which is preferably suitably secured to the flanged upperparts of the spaced substantially triangular frames 14 and 15 which have their lower parts mounted on the stationary shaft 12. 1
On the table 13 is mounted the plate 16 which is movable transversely on said table 13 and carries the heel clamping device 17. The plate 16 is preferably slidably mounted on the table 13; said plate 16 being provided with a straight slot 18 in which are disposed the guides .19 and 2O which are suitably secured to the table 13.
The cutter 21 preferably consists of a bandsaw which passes around the pulleys 22 and 23 which are mounted on the shafts 24 and which latter are journaled in suitable bearings 26 and 27 on the frame 10. The shaft 25 may be operatively connected to theelectric motor 28 which has on its shaft 29 a spur pinion 30 in mesh with the spur wheel 31 on the shaft 25.
Suitable devices indicated at 32 and may be mounted on the frame 10 to guide and prevent displacement of the bandsaw 21.
As shown, the heel clamping device con sists ofthe lower jaw 34, and the upper jaw 35 which latter is connected to one end of a shaft 36 which is mounted in the bearing 37 which is provided at the upper end of the upwardly eXtending curved arm 38 with which the lower jaw 34 is provided. To the other end of the shaft 36 is connected the rear end of the operating lever 43 which is provided at its forward end with the handle 44. The lower jaw 34 is provided at its rear end with a rounded extension 39 which is mounted on the vertical pivot 40 which latter preferablv extends between the spaced lugs 41 and 42 which are provided on that end of the plate 16 which is adjacent to the bandsaw 21. The jaws 34 and 35 are preferably provided with projecting parts 45 and 46 formed and adapted to fit in the crease between the heel. and heel-seat of the shoe 47.
On the rear part of the plate 16 is mounted on the pivot 48 the lever 49 which is provided with the handle 50 at one end and is pressed by the spring 51 to have the tooth 52 at its other end normally in engagement with the teeth 53 on the rounded extension 39 on the lower jaw 34 to lock the heel clamping device in adjusted position.
The plate 16 may be operated by any suitable means, that shown consisting of the lever 54 having the handle at its forward end and having at its rear end the sector 56 which is mounted on the pivot 57 on the table 13 and is provided with teeth 53 in mesh with the teeth 59 which are provided on the plate 16. A latch 60 is mounted on the pivot 61 between the ears 62 on the lever 54 and has its forward end portion pressed by the spring 63 and has its rear end portion extending through a slot in the lever 54 and adapted to fit in the notches 64 provided in the table 13 to lock the lever 54 in adjusted position.
A finger 65 is suitably mounted on the arm 11 and adapted to engage the frame 14 to limit the forward and the rearward movement of the table 13.
Movement of the table 13 may be effected by any suitable means; those shown consisting of the lever 66 which has the handle 67 on its forward portion and which has its rear end portion suitably attached to the frame 15, and the foot-lever 68 which has its rear end portion mounted on the pivot 69 on the lower part of the frame 10 and is joined by the connecting rod 70 to the arm 71 which latter is suitably connected to the lever 66.
From the foregoing the operation and advantages of the construction described will be understood by those skilled in the art. It will be seen' that when the .motor 28 is operated to drive the pulley 23 and consequentlythe bandsaw 21, and theheel of the shoe 47 is clamped between the jaws 34 and 35 of the heel clamping device, the lever 54 may be operated to move the plate 16 transversely to the bandsaw 21 according to the amount that is to be out off of the heel of the shoe 47. If a straight cut of the heel is to be made the heel clamping device is adjusted tohave the jaws 34 and 35 disposed parallel to the bandsaw 21 and then the lever 66 is operated to turn the table 13 on the stationary shaft l2 and thus move the heel in a curved path past the bandsaw 21 to have the latter cut away the desired part of the heel. 'Ihe lever 43 being offset from the jaw 35 permits of a clear view so that the proper placing of the heel between the clamping jaws 34 and 35 is easily and quickly effected. When it is desired to make an angular cut of the heel the lever 49 is operated to move it out of engagement with the teeth 53 and the lever 43 is then moved to turn the heel clamping device on the pivot 40 until the heel makes the desired angle to the bandsaw 2l and then the lever 49 is released to lock the heel clamping device in the adjusted position and the lever 66 is operated to move the table 13 past the bandsaw 21 to have the latter cut the heel.
The construction which has been particularly illustrated and described admits of minor changes and modifications-where fore the right is reserved to all such changes and modifications as do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention which is defined in the appended claims.
I claim l:
1. In heel cutting apparatus, the combination of a stationary frame, a substantially horizontal pivot lshaft stationarily mounted on said frame, a frame pivotally mounted on said pivot shaft, a table fastened toI the second mentioned frame, a plate movable transversely on said table, and a heel clamping device carried by said plate, substantially as described.
2.v In heel cutting apparatus, the combination of a plate, a heel clamping jaw piv.- otally connected to said plate and having an upwardly extending arm with a bearing therein, a shaft mounted in said bearing, an operating lever mounted on one end of said shaft, and a heel clamping jaw mounted on the other end of said shaft.
3. In heel cutting apparatus, thecombination of a movably mounted table, a
plate movably mounted on said table, a heel clamping jaw pivotally connected to said plate and having an arm with a bearing therein, a shaft mounted in said bearing, an operating lever mounted on one end of said shaft, and a heel clamping jaw connected to the other end of said shaft.
4. In heel cutting apparatus, the combination of a stationary pivot shaft, a table movably mounted on said stationary pivot shaft, a plate movable transversely on said table, a heel clamping jaw pivotally connected to said plate and 'having an upwardly extending arm with a bearing therein, a shaft mounted in said bearing, and a heel clamping jaw connected to the last mentioned shaft.
