This type of device which isA familiar' to children is operatedby resting ltheweight of the body onone foot whichis placed upon the coaster and pushing 'on the ground with the other foot to propel the device. The Inovmentum which is acquired by pushing is flange, as shown at 8, is sheared from the double flange members 9 and 10 of the post utilized in coasting.
This invention aims to provide anim# proved construction of coaster. The inven tion further aims'to provide improved -means for adapting the device to operate by roll` upon ice and snow.
The present device` is constructed in the form of a runner with a pedal member upon which the weight of the operator is rested and an upright tiller vpost whichis employed in steadying the weightof the body and in directing the device.4 'Detachable roller ing upon oors or pavements or by gliding members which maybe applied or removed as desired are provided so that the coaster" may be used on the pavement or sidewalks when the rollers are attached or upon ice or snow when the rollers are detached.
In the accompanying drawings in which I have illustrated an embodiment of my invention- Figure 1 is a side elevation ofthe device;
Fig. 2 is a plan view taken on the line 2, 2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view on the line 3, 3, of Fig. 2;
Fig. L1 is a detail sectional view on the line 11, 4, of Fig. 2;
Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 5, 5, of Fig. 2; and l Fig. 6 is a front elevation of top of the tiller post and the handle connected thereto.
The runner member 1 is constructed of T iro-n, as can be seen from the drawings, having the two flanges lying horizontally and the central flange disposed upward vertically. The front-end 2 of the runner curvedupwardly so that it will ride easily over minor obstructions. A vertical tiller post 3 is secured to the runner 1 for guiding the coaster, and forsteadying the weight of the operator thereupon. This tiller post 3 is constructed of a piece of "l" iron, the cen tral flange being out olf diagonally, shown at L1 in Fig. 1, near t-he top of the post, and a handle member 5 being attached to the double flanges asshown at 6 in Fig. 6. The handle member 5 consists cfa piece of tubing which is flattened at the center' so as to be easily secured to the double flanges 6 of the post 3. A bolt 7 is employed to secure this joint.
The lower end of the tiller post 3 is secured to the runner 1 in the manner shown indetail in Fig. t. The lower end of the 3, a slot being cut in? the double flanges at the center thereof in order to lit over the vertical centralflange v11 of the runner 1. The double flanges 9 and 10 rest upon the double flanges 12` and 13 of the runner 1. The central flange 8 of the tiller post 3 is bolted to the centralllange 11 of the runner l.
A diagonal brace 14 is riveted to the een tral flanges of the runner 1 and the tiller post 3. The tiller post is thus securely fastened to the ruimer so that the operator may readily balance himself upon the device.
A foot plate or pedal member 15 is secured to the central flange 11 at about the middle point of the runner and just back of the tiller post 3. This foot plate consists of a piece of sheet metal having a pair of ears 16, 16, struck up from the curved front end of the same to prevent the foot of the operator from slipping olf of the plate. Two pairs of lugs 17, 17 and 18, 18 are stamped from the metal of the foo-t plate and bent down upon opposite sides of the central flange 11 of the runner 1 to which flange these lugs or ears 17, 17 and 18, 18 are securely fastened as by riveting.
The device thus far described is adapted to be used on snow or ice, the double flanges of the runner resting upon the surface of the snow or ice and operating like the runner of a sled. I provide a pair of rollers 19 and 20 which may be attached to the double llanges 12 and 13 of the runner so that the device may be employedupon pavements, sideWal-ksmand the like. l
Each of these roller members is provided with a frame consisting of a pair 'of-ears* 21, 21, struck up from a piece of sheet metia-l'I of which the roller frame is composed. The mainbody 22 of the roller frame lies flat against the lower surface of the double llange member and two pairs ofearsQB, 9A are struck up from opposite ends of the main plate 22 littingoverthedouble flanges 12, 13 and having their ends 'extending upward along Y the central flange 11 of the runner 1.
