To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, RAYMOND J. Lnwrs, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Elwood, in the county of Madison and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway-Track Gages, of which the following is a specification.
rIhe present invention relates to measuring instruments and more particularly to new and useful improvements in railway track gages.
The primary object of my invention is to provide a railway track gage having improved indicating means associated therewith which will automatically and without adjustment or manipulation clearly and accurately indicate the gage of a railway track or the like.
Another object of my invention is to provide a gage f-or linear measure having a dial associated therewith whereby to indicate accurately the distance between given points.
Other objects and advantages to bederived from the use of my improved railway track gage will appear from the following detail description and the claims, taken with an inspection of the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is an end sectional view of a railway track showing my improved gage in operative position;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmental elevational View, partly in section showing the indieator of my invention;
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the same;
Fig. 4l is a similar view, the indicator dial being removed; and
Fig. 5 is an enlarged fragmental sectional view of one end of the gage.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, wherein similar characters of reference designate like and corresponding parts throughout the various views, 1 and 2 designate the sections of my improved gage, said sections being relatively telescopically related, the section 1 being a tubular sleeve adapted to accommodate the rod 2. A coil spring 3 is arranged in the tubular section and acts upon the section 2, normally tending to force the same from the section 1. The free end of the sections 1 and 2 are provided with object engaging shoes 4 and 5, respectively, said shoes being in the present instance adapted for engagement with the rails 6 of a railway track or the like.
The indicator of my invention is preferably in the form of a dial 7 mounted on `vertical standards 8 carried by the section 1 adjacent one free end thereof. An indieating hand 9 carried by a bevel gear 10 journaled concentrically on said dial is adapted to move across the dial for an obvious purpose, a vertical driving shaft 11 having a bevel gear 12 on the upper end 'thereof delivering motion to the bevel gear 10. The shaft 11 is mounted in a bearing 13 carried by the dial. rllhe lower free end of the shaft is provided with a bevel gear 14C meshing with a bevel gear 15 carried on a transversely arranged shaft 16, mounted on the section 1 and retained in position by means of bracket 16', said bevel gear being provided with spur teeth 17 for engagement with a rack bar 18 stamped in the section 2.
It will be seen that when the section 2 is moved relative to the section 1 this motion will be transmitted to the hand 9 by means of the bevel gearing described indicating accurately on the dial the exact gage. Of course, it is to be understood that the shoes i and 5 may be made in various sha-pes for engagement with various objects, or the shoes may be removed entirely from the sections. I desire to lay particular stress upon the eXtreme simplicity and accuracy of my invention, it being unnecessary to employ any Complicated adjusting or calculating devices in connection with the gage, all measurements being clearly and accurately indicated on the dial. It will also be understood that the portion 1 is slotted as indicated at 2O to accommodate the bevel gear 14 and spur gear 17.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it is thought that a clear and comprehensive understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of my invention may be had,
and while I have shown and described the device as embodying a specific structure, I desire that it be understood that such changes may be made in said structure, as do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:h
