pers knowir'asbeam caliperfandftheobject of the invention is to provide a beam caliper-of simple design which will accuratel1 indicate `the measurements upon a dial wit out com plieated manipulation and to this end the Invention consistsA in the speciicarrange Vment and construction of different parts, all
as' more fully hereinafter described and shownin the accompanying drawings, in whichz Figure 1 is a side elevation of my im proved beam caliper. Fig. 2 is an enlarged crosssection through the beam on line 2 2.
Fig.` 3 is thesame as Fig. 2 without the rack ban.' Fig. 4 is a crosssection of the sliding jaw on line 4-8Fig 1, other parts being omitted. Fig. 5 a detached longitudinal sec- 'tion of the pinion ofthe indicating device.
Fig. 6 is a detached section of the disk car-A ryingf the Vernier. Fig. 7 is a crosssection of t e 'pinion'shown in Fig. 5. Fig. 8 is across- `section on line 4-'S.in Fig. l.
In the drawings l is the beam, 2 the fixed jaw formed at one end thereof, 3 the scale marked oil on the beam and 4 the sliding jaw carrying a set screw 5 for holding it in any desired position. f
'The jaws are of known description and adapted for inside and outside calipering, 0 the movable jaw being provided with an index'mark 6 adapted to be registered with the divisions of. the scale.
For accurate adjustment the slidingr jaw has secured thereto in parallelism wit the beam a micrometer screw 8 which passes loosely through the forked ends of a sliding block 10 and bears a knurled nut 9 in the fork of the sliding block.
The'sliding block has a set screw 12 for making it fast upon the beam to permit the adjustment of 'the sliding j aw upon the beam Within the limit ol the screw 8 by turning the knurled nut, all as Well understood. The indicating device comprises for its ac- This wenn@ reines E@ mankind Biani;

The rotary member or pinidii it is of cylindrical shape and the opposite'ends form the bearings 18 by means of which it is journaled in the sliding jaw, the pinion being thus held I against lateral displacement by itsengagement with the screw-rod.
To one or both ends of the pinion is rotatively adjustably secured by a screw 2G a disk 19 having asuitable index mark adapted to register with the divisions of the scale 235 which is placed upon the outer margin of a f circular recess provided for the disk and rep resents fractions of an inch or other unit of,
measurement.
Thedisk 1l) is preferably provided upon The screw-threaded/rodlS 'may be per` manently secured in the channel 15 by soldering or otherwise, but preferablyl secure it by means of one or more set screws 25 passing transversely through the beam adjacent to the rod in such manner that the head of the screw bears against it and not through the throat, e sliding gew on inion should weer out gegernent with the d be adjusted into enenother portion @ou @agement therewith.
The cali er being constructed as shown and desori ed is very simple und. vcompnet and ce able of giving accurate nieesureln'ents and o easy 'r nd quick mani uletion, all of which makes it well adapted '.or general use. What l claim ne my invention is l l. The combination of e boem having e fixed jew end provided upon its lower side with a longitudinal channel the wellsoi' which form a throat therein, @screw-threaded rod secured in seid channel and her/'ing a perf.

2. The combination oa been having e fixed jew and rovided upon its lower side inni channel of vcirculer crossseotion the Walls of which form e Contracted throat therein, a screw-threaded rod rotetively edjustabiy secured in said channel and heving portions or' Wardly through seid throat, a sliding jew. on the beam, e cylindrical member journaied therein transversely "to the serew'threaded rodand provided with screw-threads upon its middle portion forming e rook and inion engagement with the screw-threaded) rod, and an indicator carried 'by the sliding jaw and actua-ted by the member.
