Improvement in Stone Lifter and Stump Extractor.
No. 123,916. Patented Feb.20,187'2.
AM ruora-un/nmmmc m N 21/ pssamvslr reamm/ UNITED STATES PATENT Orrron.
JOSIAH KNOOP, OF GASSTOVVN, OHIO.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,916, dated February 20, 1872.
Specification describing aStone-Lifter and Stump-Extractor, invented by JOSIAH KNOOP, of (Jasstown, in the county of Miami and State of Ohio.
The invention will first be fully described and then clearly pointed out in claim.
Figure 1 is a plan, and Fig. 2 a vertical and longitudinal section of my improved machine.
A represents the whole lifter and extractor, and B B two main longitudinal side rails thereof. O C are bolsters, having a slot, 0, at each end; D D, coupling cross-bars, and E E crossties, placed over bolsters. F is the cross-beam, to which double lifter-pulleys ff are attached F F, the lateral braces thereto. F F are longitudinal braces; F F, the perpendicular supports. G is the rope by which they are raised and lowered, and H the windlass or drum-shaft, on which said rope is wound and unwound. This drum H is provided with spurwheel h, which is driven by pinion j on driving-shaft J. h is a detent, which prevents the backward motion of spur-wheel at any stoppage while winding up. If is a catch that fastens over shaft J, and is pivoted to side-rail B. This shaft J is arranged in bearings j j under side rails; is projected at 9' f beyond said side rails, and is provided with a ring, K is the front coupling, attached to cross-tie E, and consisting of the vertical standard It, the hor izontal and front end perforated piece 70 and the oblique brace k The horizontal piece k has a rearward projection k The first peculiarity, which results in an improvement upon ordinary liftingjacks, consists in the peculiar mode of arranging the bolsters under the side rails so as to elevate the latter above the wagon, and thus afford more room beneath for the load, so as to aflord, by the end slots, an easy and detachable mode of fastening the lifting-frame to the wagon; and, finally, so as to allow the frame to be made of any desirable width within the standards to facilitate turning. The second peculiarity in my machine that I regard as an improvement is the front coupling K, which allows the wagon to be coupled without the ordinary coupling-pole, allowing that to be removed out of the way of the load. The third peculiarity of construction which I consider an improvement consists in using a front coupling, K, which is provided with a rear projection to brace the slider of the wagon running-gear, and thus support the tongue. The fourth improvement consists in placing the cross-tie E in the rear of the lifting-frame, to receive the hounds of the hind axletree of the wagon. When the hounds of the wagon are thus raised in front above a horizontal plane its hind bolster and standards are thrown back, and the bolster G is correspondingly inclined forward at the bottom to bring the slats in line with said standards. This arrangement effectually raises the hind hounds of the wagon out of the way of the load. The fifth improvement consists in supporting the pulley cross-beam F by two side posts, F F inclined toward each other at top, and four longitudinal braces, F obliqued toward said cross-beam, both longitudinally and laterally. This serves com pletcly to counteract the lateral strain when the wagon is out of a horizontal plane, and also to prevent said cross-beam from being changed in its central and allotted position. The sixth improvement consists in arranging over the bolsters O O the cross-ties E E, which serve to prevent the side rails B B from being twisted or spread apart by the lateral pressure of braces F F The seventh improvement coir sists in providing the drive-shaft J with the ring j and projections 7' j to allow the pinion j to be thrown out of gear with the spur-wheel h by sliding the said shaft laterally, and permitting the pulleys to run down by their own gravity. When it is desired to throw the pinion into gear, in order to wind up or raise the weight, the shaft is pushed back and the catch k is brought down between the ring j and side rail B.
Having thus described all that is necessary to a full understanding of my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The bolsters, applied under the side rails 4. A lifter-frame,proi'ided with cross-bar D, of frame, and slotted at each end to fit over as and for the purpose described. standards, as described, and for the purpose 5. The cross-ties E E, arranged over the set forth. bolsters, as and for the purpose described.
2. The front coupling K, applied to cross- JOSIAH KNOOP. bar D and under frame, as and for the purpose set forth. Witnesses:
3. The front coupling K, provided with rear S. G. HARBAUGII, projection K to brace slider, and thus support J. J. BOAK,
the tongue, as described. 7 A. D. KNIOK.
