To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES M BRoYLns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wonder, in the county of Churchill, State of Nevada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. p
lThis invention relates to wrenches and more particularly to improvements in quick action wrenches.
The object of the invention is tojprovide an improved form of quick action wrench in which one of the jaws, for a preliminary or rough setting is released from the second jaw and moved along the shank of they latter, and after rengagement therewith is adinstable by means of a screw device. In this connection, I mount the movable jaw slidably and pivotally upon a frame or casing which surrounds the shank of the fixed j aw, and provide a relative adjustment between the frame or casing and the movable j aw so that after the casing has been set with relation to the shank to give the preliminary setting, the movable j aw may then be set up with relation to the casing to take the final hold upon the element to be gripped.
With the above objects in view and such others as may hereinafter appear, my invention will now be fully set` forth and described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

free to move up and down upon the latter to a limited extent so that the teeth 7 formed upon the inner `iace of the body of the frame 6 may be carried into and out oi engagement with the teeth 8 lormed along the lower side of the shank 2. The teeth S are of such formation that the Jframe may be slid forwardly ther-cover, but may not be carried backwardly without disengaging the teeth 7 from the teeth 8. Above the shank 2, the casing 6 is hollow and is provided with a pair of forwardly extending arms 9 which closely embrace the body 5, and are longitudinally slotted as at 10 to engage over headed projectionsor screws 11 extending from opposite sides of the body 5. By reason of the pivotal and slotted connection between the body 5 and the .frame 6, the latter may be moved longitudinally relative to the body, and may also rock upon the pins 11. Practically, throughout its length, the body 5 is provided with a longitudinally threaded bore 12 into which is threaded an adjusting stem 13 which extends thence rearwardly through the casing 6, and overlies the shank 2 and extends through the handle 14- in which it may have a bearing. The rear end of the stem 13 is provided with a cross head 15 by means of which it may be adjusted. Vithin the oasing 6, the stem 13 is provided with a spring 16 which has an intermediate portion surrounding the stem 13 and terminates at opposite sides of the latter in coiled spring arms 17 which extend upwardly into resilient conta ct with the top of the casing 6. The tendency of the spring 16 is to press the teeth 7 into engagement with the teeth 8.
The spring 16 is held in position between a pin 18 which extends transversely through the stern 13 and a stop nut 19 which bears against the rear wall of the casing 6 and coperates with an external pin 20 to prevent relative longitudinal movement of the stem 13 and the casing 6. It will be noted that the stem 13 in extending through the rear wall of the frame 6 passes through a vertically elongated slot 21, Lso that the casing 6 may have the necessary freedom with relation to the shank 2 in order to free the teeth 7 Jfrom the teeth 8.
In operation, in order to engage the movable jaw 3 with the nut or other object to be engaged, the casing 6 is rocked on the be ycommunicated tolthe movable jaw 3 or jaw 3 downwardly in order 'to disengage the teeth 7 from the teeth 8, or the casing may beslid forwardly romthe shank 2 along-'the teeth 7 to ride pastvthe teeth f8 until the approximate adjustment has been secured. The teeth 7 and 8 having then been rengaged, the stem 13 is turned by means of the hand gripor cross head L15 in order to move the jaw 3 forward relative to the easing 6 into tight engagement with the object. By means of the relative movement of the jaw 3 and the easing 6, a'relative effective movement of approximately an inch will'lbe secured, even without any preliminary disengagement of `the teeth 7 and 8. lThe handle 14 provides a suitable bearing for the 'stem '13 so thatthe latter will not have `any relative movement with relation to the shank 2, or, any looking movement of the easing 6 cannot by any cause the body 5.
