Be it known that I, GEORGE B. LONG, acitizen of the United States, residing at Waterbury, in the county of New Haven, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Faucets, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to faucets particularly to faucets of the push button type adapted for use with water coolers and other liquid dispensing devices and is an improvement on the faucets forming the subject-matter of Letters Patent No. 953,342, dated March 29, 1910'and N o. 987,633, dated March 21, 1911.-
The object of the invention-is to provide a simple and relatively inexpensive faucet, the body or shell of which may be made in one piece of seamless tubing with the valve "seat formed integrally with the body portion, in which the valve and valve rod will be simple in construction and easily assembled, and in which danger of leakage past the discharge opening will be effectively guarded against.
With these and other objects herein described in view, my invention consists in the construction and combination of elements hereinafter set fort Referring to the drawings,

small diameter. At its free end, that is, at the end away from the main portion 2, the socket portion is provided with a flange which extends outward at 3 and then in a direction parallel with the aXis of the faucet body at 4, this portion 4 of the flange being non-circular in cross section, in the faucet illustrated being hexagonal, as` shown in Fig. 2, to permit of being grasped by a wrench to screw the faucet onto the end of the pipe to which it is to be applied,'the socket portion l being interiorly screwthreaded at 5.
Between the cylindrical socket portion l and the main portion 2 of the socket body is formed an inwardly projecting shoulder 6, this shoulder extending inward to a diameter substantially less than the interior diameter of the main portion 2. At a point toward the outer end of the main portion 2 but some distance from this end, is formed an inwardly extending shoulder 7 which, however, has an interior diameter only slightly less than the interior diameter of the main portion 2. The faucet body between the cylindrical socket portion l and the shoulder 6 is tapered, as shown at 8. Near the shoulder 7 on the outside of the main portion 2 is secured a ring 9 preferably having a thin flange 10 at its base which is spun or forced into the depression on the outside of the main portion opposite the shoulder 7.
Between the shoulders 6 and 7 is formed a discharge opening l1 and a spout 12 is preferably secured to the main portion 2 of the faucet body by a flange 13 surrounding the opening 1l.
Vithin the tapered portion 8 is arranged the valve 14 adapted to rest against the shoulder 6 and carried on the end of valve rod 15. This valve rod has formed on it, by upsetting or otherwise, near its inner end a ring 16 of less diameter than the interior diameter of the shoulder 6 and is centrally bored out at its inner end, as shown at 17. Restingagainst the ring 16 between it and the inner end of the valve rod is a disk of non-metallic material 18 such as soft rubber or leather adapted to form a tight closure with the valve seat formed by the shoulder 6. Between the disk 18 and the inner end of the valve rod is a metallic disk or washer 19 having its outer diameter substantially the same as the inner diameter of the shoulder 6. The inner end of the valve rod is turned outward, as shown at 20, against the metallic disk or washer 19 to hold it and the disk 18 between it and the ring 16.
The valve rod extends through and is guided in the bottom of a cup 21, the inner end portion of which is reduced in diameter so as to eXtend through and fit snugly in the interior of the shoulder 7, the portion of the cup outside the shoulder 7 being of larger diameter to fit the interior of the main portion of the faucet body, a shoulder being formed in the sides of the cup between the inner reduced portion and the outer portion which fits against and makes a tight joint with the shoulder 7 and also prevents the reduced portion from extending too far toward the spout 12.
The valve rod is forced outward to hold the valve 14 against the valve seat formed by the shoulder 6 by the means shown and described in Letters Patent No. 987,633, dated March 21, 1911, above referred to, this means comprisinga spring 25 bearing at one end against a washer 26 within the cup 21 and separated from the bottom of the cup by a disk 27 of non-metallic material such as soft rubber or leather, and bearing at its outer end against a spring clip 28, as shown in Figs. 4 and 6, which is adapted to engage notches 29 on the outer end of the valve rod 15, this spring clip having an outwardly projecting lug 30 which engages an opening 31 in a push button 32, the inner end of which fits and slides within the outer end of the main portion l2 of lthe faucet body.
The faucet body is formed of seamless tubing which may be of relatively slight thickness, the flange 3, 4 giving strength to the socket portion 1 which needs to be of material only thick enough to carry the screw-threads 5, the hexagonal or other noncircular form given to the portion 4 of this flange adding to the strength of the socket portion.
Having thus described my invention,what I claim is 1. A faucet body formed of one piece of tubing of substantially the same thickness throughout having at one end a socket integral therewith of relatively large diameter, a main portion of relatively small diameter and an inwardly bent shoulder integral with the body between the socket and the main portion adapted to form a valve seat.
2. A faucet body formed of one piece of tubing of substantially the same thickness throughout having at one end a socket integral therewith of relatively large diameter with a noncircular flange on its free end,
a main portion of relatively small diameter and an inwardly bent shoulder integral with the body between the socket and the main portion adapted to form a valve seat.
3. A faucet body formed of one piece of tubing of substantially the same thickness throughout having at one end a socket integral therewith of relatively large diameter, a main portion of relatively small diameter and an inwardly bent shoulder integral with the body between the socket and the main portion adapted to form a valve seat and a second inwardly bent shoulder integral with the body near the outer end of the main portion.
4. A faucet body formed of one piece of tubing of substantially the same thickness throughout having at one end a socket integral therewith of relatively large diameter with a noncircular Bange on its free end, a main portion of relatively small diameter and an inwardly bent shoulder integral with the body between the socket and the main portion adapted to form a valve seat, and a second inwardly bent shoulder integral with the body nearthe outer end of the main portion.
5. A faucet body formed of one piece of tubing of substantially the same thickness throughout having at one end a socket integral therewith of relatively large diameter with a noncircular flange on its free end, a main portion of relatively small diameter and an inwardly bent shoulder integral with the body between the socket and the main portion adapted to form a valve seat, and a second inwardly bent shoulder integr-al with the body near the outer end of the main portion and a cup having its-end reduced in y diameter and extending through said second shoulder and having a shoulder therein resting against said second shoulder.
6. A faucet body formed of one piece of tubing of substantially the same thickness throughout having at one end a socket integral therewith of relatively large diameter, a main portion of relatively small diameter andan inwardly bent shoulder integral with the body between the socket and the main portion adapted to form a valve seat, in combination with a valve adapted to seat against said shoulder, and a valve rod having a ring near its end and having its end bored out and outwardly turned to hold the valve between it and the ring.
7. A faucet body formed of one piece of tubing of substantially the same thickness throughout having at one end a socket integral therewith of relatively large diameter with a noncircular flange on its free end, a main portion of relatively small diameter and an inwardly bent shoulder integral with the body between the socket and the main portion adapted to form a valve seat, and a second inwardly bent shoulder moonen v integral with the body near the outer end bottom of the cup serving ns n guide for the il@ o the main portion, a, cup having its end valve rod.
