SPOOL CONSTRUCTION.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK JOHANNS- MEYER, a citizen of the United States, resid- 'fication.
My invention relates to improvements in means for securingin place the flangesrof bobbins, spools and the like.
My invention is particularly applicable to spools for electromagnetic windings. Such spools are preferably constructed of fiber tubes and fiber end disks, which have in practice been found very difficult to hold in assembled relation without resorting to cumbersome and expensive securing means. My invention, however, is not limited in its application to this particular class of devices,
In order to fully and clearly disclose the nature and advantages of my invention, I shall describe the embodiments thereof illustrated in the accompanying drawing. It should be understood, however, that my invention is not limited to the specific embodiments thereof illustrated.

'Ihe spool construction illustrated comprises a cylindrical fiber tube 1 and circular fiber end flanges or disks 2 and 3. The end flanges are preferably formed annular to fit onto the ends of the tubular member I and for reasons hereinafter set forth are preferably made to provide a snug fit between said tubular member and their-inner faces.

sions as to snugly fit upon the end of the tubular member. At one end the ring I is provided with an annular flange 5 preferably continuous. At its opposite end the ring 4 is provided with a plurality of inwardly extending lugs 6, which in practice may be of any preferred number. For a purpose hereinafter set forth, it is preferred to have the lugs 6 yielding and to this end I prefer to form the lugs 6 upon tongues 7 formed by slotting the ring l. In addition the ring 4 is provided with a plurality of outwardly flaring tongues 8 preferably punched therefrom.
Adjacent to its extremities the tubular member of the spool is provided with an annular groove or a plurality of recesses 9 for receiving the lugs 6 of the retaining device. Each end disk is provided with an annular groove or a plurality of recesses 10 for receiving the tongues 8 of the retaining device.
In assembling, an end disk is first placed upon the tubular member at a distance from the ends thereof. A ring l is then forced onto the end of the tubular member, the lugs 6 of the ring yielding to this operation. When the ring l is forced into place the lugs 6 spring into the groove or recesses 9 in the tubular member, thereby effectually locking said ring to said member. Ihe end disk is then moved onto the ring I and against the flange 5. Ihe end disk surrounding the ring positively holds the lugs 6 in the groove in the tubular member and the flange 5 of the ring renders removal of the end disk from the tubular member impossible. Also when the end disk is moved to the position illustrated the tongues 8 of the retaining ring spring into the groove in the end disk, thereby, holding said disk against the flange of the retaining device. Thus the end disk is not only effectually prevented from withdrawal from the tubular member but is also efiectually held against any longitudinal movement on said member. (If course, where it is deemed unnecessary to hold the end disk from movement on the tubular member the tongues 8 and their cooperating grooves in the disks may be dispensed with.
Thus by the use of a very simple and inexpensive retaining device, which may readily be punched from sheet metal, I am enabled to produce a rigid spool construction. Furthermore, by making the retainll L ing ring of less than the thickness of the end disk and providing a close fit between the tubular member and the inner face'of the end disk, as illustrated, the retaining device will be wholly concealed except for the flange 5, giving the spool a very finished appearance. Also the concealment of the inner end of the retaining device insures thorough insulation thereof from the conducting parts placed upon the spool.
The modification of the retaining device shown in Fig. 5 is essentially the same as that above described, except that it is formed in sections 11, 12, 13 and 14:. Sectional formation of the retaining device might be advantageous under certain conditions, especially if a polygonal device was desired instead of a circular device. It should, of course, be understood that the device might be of various diflerent shapes from that illustrated. A further advantage of forming the retaining device in sections is that the necessity for resilient inner lugs is thereby eliminated. Accordingly, each section may be provided with a long flange 15, as
illustrated, instead of small lugs 6. The lugs 6, however, are suflicient for ordinary purposes.
especially in view of the fact that the enddisk, when forced into place effectually binds said sections together.
Having thus described my invention what I claim asnew and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a spool construction, or the like, in combination, a body portion, a flange member therefor and a device interposed between said body portion and said flange member for securing the same together, said device having a part interlocking with said body portion and secured in interlocking relation therewith by said .flange member.
2. In combination, a body portion, a securing device mounted thereonand an end flange member for said body portion, said flange member being adapted to -positively lock said device to said body portion and to be itself locked thereto by said device.
3. In a spool construction or the like, in combination, a body portion, a device thereabout having resilient projections extending into said body portions and an end flange member overlapping a portion of said device to lock said projections of the latter in engagement with said body portion, said device having an angularly disposed portion overlying a portion of the outer face of. said end flange member to prevent withdrawal of the latter from said body portion.
4. In a spool construction orthe like, in combination, a body portion, a member surrounding said body portion, said member being formed in sections, each section having an angularly disposed projection extending into said body portion, and an end flange member fitting over the sections of said member to secure the same to said body portion, each of said sections having an angularly disposed portion engaging the outer face of said flange member to retain said flange member on said body portion.
5. In a spool construction or the like, in combination, a body portion, an end flange member fitting onto said body portion, a plurality of devices contained between said end flange member and said body portion to secure the same together, each having an angularly disposed portion projecting into and held in engagement with said body portion by said end flange member and an angularly disposed portion engaging said.

6. In a spool construction or the like, in combination, a body portion, an end flange member fitting onto said body portion, a plurality of devices contained between said end flange member and said body portion to secure the same together, each having an angularly disposed portion projecting into and held in engagement with said body portion by said end flange portion to prevent withdrawal thereof from said body portion, and tongues on certain of said devices for holding said end .flange member against movement in the opposite direction.
7. In a spool construction or the like, in combination, a body portion, an end flange member fitting onto said body portion, a plurality of devices contained between said end flange member and said body portion to secure the same together, each having an angularly disposed portion projecting Into and held in engagement with said body portion by .said end flange member to prevent withdrawal thereof from said body portion, andv tongues on certain of said devices for holding said end flange member against movement in the opposite direction, said end flange member concealing all parts of said device except those exterior to the outer face thereof.
8. In a spool-con'struction or the like, in combination, a cylindrical member, an annular end disk member mounted thereon, a ring contained between said cylindrical member and said end disk member, .said ring having angularly disposed portions projecting into the cylindrical member, an angularly disposedflange external to the outer faceof said end disk member and a plurality of yielding lugs each adapted to spring into a recess in said end disk member to hold the same in close proximity to said flange. p I

10. In a spool construction; in combination, a body member, a flange member to telescope thereon and a device associated with said body member to limit the telescoping of said flange member and to automatically lock the latter against reverse' movement when the same is telescoped to its limit.
11. In a spool construction, in combination, a body member, a flange member therefor and an intermediate device having a portion overlapping said body member and overlapped by said flange member for interlocking said members against relative axial mqvement in one direction and having a portion overlapping said flange member for locking the latter against relative axial movement. in the other direction.
12. In a spool construction, in combination, a body member, a device detachably fitting thereon and a "flange member partially overlapping said device to lock the latter on said body member and to itself interlock with the overlapped portion of said device against movement relative thereto in one direction, said device also having a portion partially overlapping said flange member to hold the latter against movement relative thereto in the other direction.
