IS 1., ROSENTHAL, or new YORK, N Y.
CLOTH-UNROLLING DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, I'IARRIS L. RosnN'rHAL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Cloth-Unrolling Device, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to cloth handling devices or the like and has particular reference to means for supporting or suspending a roll or bolt of cloth in such a manner that the cloth may be unrolled therefrom with the minimum amount of friction or labor on the part of the operator.
Among the objects of the invention is to provide a means for use, for example, on a cutting table in a garment factory, whereby the operator may unroll and lay the cloth upon the table ply upon ply or otherwise with the maximum facility, and at the same time insuring that the cloth will be laid properly preliminary to the cutting operation, and thus the character of the output may reasonably be expected to be improved.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide a holder for a roll of cloth adjustable to rolls of different lengths.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the arrange ment and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed, and while the invention is not restricted to. the exact details of construction disclosed or suggested herein, still for the purpose of illustrating a practical embodiment thereof, reference is had to. the accompanying drawings, in which like reference characters designate the same parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view indicating one form of my improvement applied to a portable holder adapted to stand upon any part of a table or other level surface;
Fig, 2 is a front elevation of the rollengaging member or anchor;
Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the same;
Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse section through a roll of cloth indicating the anchor in operative position;
Fig. 5 is a sectional detail of the swivel from which the anchor and roll are suspended;
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a modification of the invention, the support being stationary instead of portable; and
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the l wer Specification of Letters Patent.

end of the roll supporting bar with its laterally projecting feet.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, I show in. Fig. 1 an arch or bowshaped standard comprising vertical legs 10 and a connecting head bar 11. The lower ends of these legs 10 are secured rigidly in any suitable manner at 12 to a base 13. For convenience, these parts may be made of gas pipes with joints and unions connecting them, but I do not wish to be limited in this respect in practice. Sui-lice it to say that the portable device of Fig. 1 is adapted to stand erect on any part of any table or other substantially horizontal place.
That form of the support in Fig. 6, comprises a standard; 10 which may comprise only one leg, the same being secured through a base .13 by screws, belts. or otherwise to any desired part of the cutting table. The head bar 11 in this form of the invention may be shorter accordingly than in the other or portable form;
With respect to either of the supporting devices, whether fixed or portable, the other features of my improvement are or may be always the same and hence adapted for universal or general use. Furthermore, any one of the anchor devices is adapted to be used interchangeably with either form of support. The anchor comprises two princi'pal parts, namely, the bar 14: and center plate l5.v The bar is provided at its upper end with an eye 16: from downwardly a slot 17 to any desired distance, the slot being along the central or longitudinal axis of the bar. Said upper end is preferably somewhat pointed or rounded at 18 to facilitate the passage thereof longitudinally through the rolls R of cloth and along one side of the board 19 usually employed at the center of the roll. The lower end of the bar carries horizontally projecting feet 20 which bear against the lower end of the roll and board and constitute the primary support for the roll. After the bar 14 is projected through the roll lengthwise, as stated above, and the feet 20 are brought against the center of the lower end of the roll, the centering device 15 is introduced into the other end of the roll and secured to the upper end portion of the bar 14. The plate 15 is preferably dart-shaped, having a point at its lower end to facilitate the introduction thereof into the roll, and the plate has a width substantially equal to that of which extends the board so that the plate itself will be centered without difficulty by the simple introduction thereof into the upper end of the roll. The means for fastening the centering plate to the bar, as shown herein, comprises a bolt 21 extending through the upper end or lug portion 22 of the plate and carried permanently thereby. The bolt carries a winged nut 23 or its equivalent, which is adapted to be projected through the eye 16. The bolt then glides into the slot 17 with the winged nut on the opposite side of the bar 14; from the lug 22. lVhen the parts are thuspositioned, the nut is tightened, locking the parts in the position indicated. The eye 16 will then be open and suitable for hooking upon any suitable form of hook 24; connected by one or more links 25 to the lower end of a swivel 26 journaled in a vertical hole 27 in the head bar of the support. The'swivel is provided with a head or enlargement 28 at its upper end, between which and the head bar may be provided any suitable type of anti-friction bearings 29.
\Vith the device arranged as set forth herein and suspended upon the hook 24:, the operation of unrolling the cloth is very easy. The operatorhas but to draw on the free end of the cloth and the entire suspending or holding device rotates freely around a vertical aXis in the bearing hole 27. The device is simple in construction, very efi'ective in use and cannot ordinarily become out of order or fail to operate.
I claim:
1. In a cloth unrolling device, the combination of a relatively stationary support including a vertical leg and a horizontal head bar integral therewith, said head bar having a vertical bearing hole therein, a bar adapted to extend through the center of the roll, means at the lower end of the bar to prevent the downward movement of the roll with respect to the bar, means connected to the upper end of the bar to center the same with respect to the roll, a headed member journaled in said head bar bearing hole, and flexible means connecting the upper end of the bar to the headed member providing for the Copies of this patent may be obtained for rotation of the bar and roll around the vertical axis of said bearing.
2. The herein described anchor member for cloth unrolling devices, the same comprising a straight bar having at one end a rounded point and adapted to be projected centrally through a roll of cloth alongside of theusual board, the other end of the bar being provided with laterally projecting means to limit the movement of the bar through the roll, and a centering device connected to the pointed end of the bar to hold the same in the center of the roll.
8. The herein described anchor member for cloth unrolling devices, the same comprising a straight smooth bar with a rounded point at one end to facilitate the introduction thereof longitudinally and centrally through a roll of cloth, said bar having at its other end integral laterally projecting means to limit the movement of the bar to the roll and constituting a primary support for the roll, said pointed end of the bar being provided with an eye, a centering plate cooperating with the pointed end of the bar for holding the bar centrally of the roll, and means projectable through said eye for holding the centering plate rigidly to the bar'in practice.
4:. The herein described anchoring means for cloth unrolling devices, thesame comprising a straight smooth pointed bar projectable endwise through the roll, means carried by the end of the bar opposite the point to limit the movement of the bar through the roll and constituting a main support for the roll, the pointed end of the bar being provided with an eye and a downwardly projecting longitudinal slot leading from the eye, a dart-shaped centering plate cooperatin with the slotted end of the bar and adapted to hold the bar centrally of the roll, and clamping means carried by the plate and projectable through said eye and thence into and along said slot for positioning the plate with respect to the length of the roll.
