To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES B. .Wooo, a c tizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Binder for Cards, Papers, &c., of which the following is a specification.

My invention consists of a device for binding a pack of cards, sheets of papers, etc., and displaying the same to the best advantage in flat and uniform condition, and permitting the overturning or opening of the pack or sheets in a convenient manner, after the manner of a book, and the ready removal of the same from the backs of the binder employed.

The invention is satisfactorily illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but the important instrumentalities thereof may be varied, and so it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific details shown and described.

Figure 1 represents a face view of a binder in open condition embodying my invention.

Referring to the drawings,

1 designates the body of the device, the same consisting of the covers 2, the back bone 3, and the closing and securing flap 4, which features broadly considered are well known in the art.

Connected with one of said covers 1 adjacent to said back bone are the sleeves 5 which extend in the longitudinal direction of the latter and have leaves 6 extending therefrom, the same being placed between said back bone and the covering sheet 7 thereon, which sheet is pasted or gummed to said back-bone, thus firmly retaining said leaves and consequently said sleeves in position.

be held by the same and extends in the longitudinal direction of the backbone, it having on its terminals the segmental or open rings 9 on which latter display samples or other cards, sheets or placards are movably fitted, the latter having eyelets therein to receive said rings, whereby said cards or sheets may be turned over on the rings 9 from left to right, and. vice versa, after the manner of the leaves of the book so as to bring a desired card or sheet to view, or permit inspection of the display materials, samples, advertisements or other matter of all of the several cards or sheets, it being evident that the rings, rods, sleeves and leaves provide a firm connection of said sheets or cards with the body of the device.

In order to prevent the displacement or stripping of the cards or sheets 10 fromthe rings 9, the outer or free terminals thereof have therein the eyes 11, and through the same is inserted the pin 12 which extends from one ring to the other and forms a barrier to the eyelets in the cards or sheets slipping beyond the open ends of the rings.

One end of the pin 12 is bent on itself, or has a piece of material secured thereto, wire being preferred, forming the resilient bill 13 which has its terminal portion bent toward the pin forming the shoulder 14 and the lip 15, said shoulder reducing the base of the throat 16 existing between said lip and the adjacent portion of the pin, so that said shoulder may abut against the adjacent portion of the ring as a stop to prevent the improper withdrawal of the pin from the ring, but when superior force is applied to the bill or pin in the direction of the length of the pin, the shoulder rides on the ring thus expanding the bill and forcing out the lip, whereby the width of the throat 16 is increased sufiiciently to allow the shoulder and lip to pass over the ring, when the lip, shoulder and bill are disconnected from the ring, and the pin is free to emerge from the eyes of both rings, and the cards or sheets are rendered removable from the latter at the open ends thereof.

In assembling the cards or sheets they are fitted by their eyelets on and over the rings. Then the pin is inserted in the eyes of the rings and when the shoulder 14 rides on the ring to which the bill is fitted, the latter is first expanded and next permitted to con tract, whereby the lip and the shoulder spring toward the pin and so the shoulderprovides a lock for the bill with the respective ring, and both ends of the pin remain in the eyes of the opposite ring controlling-- the cards or sheets against displacement from the rings as hereinbefore explained.

Attention is drawn to the fact that when a card or sheet isto be turned over sayto the right, its eyelet portion strikes the pin 12, and the latter acts as a draft bar to be drawn down on the rings 9 at the open ends thereof and cause said rings to overturn to an extent shown in Fig 5, whereby said card or sheet will bend down suiificiently to be comparatively flat and snug on the right hand cover 2, so that the upper face of the card or sheet may present 1ts samples, dis; play matter, etc. to the best advantage,

A card or sheet may be thrown to the left so as to exhibit the relative side or face thereof, and it also will bend down flat and snug on the cover beneath it, and the other cards 01; sheets may be successively turned over to the left one" upon the, other;
