Description
DVKATZENSTEIN.
lmprovement in Combined Table, Sofa, and Bed.
Patented Feb.20,1872.-
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
DAVID KATZENSTEIN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED TABLES, SOFAS, AND BEDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,829, dated February 20, 1872.
Specification describing a new and Improved Combined Table, Sofa, and Bed, invented by DAVID KATZENSTEIN, of the cityofNew York, in the county and State of New York.
Figure 1 represents a Vertical section of my invention, showing it as a table. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same, showing it as a sofa or chair; and Fig. 3 is a similar view, showing it as a bed.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a new article of furniture, which can be used as a table, sofa or chair, and bed, as occasion may require, and which, at the sametime, is extremel simple in construction and convenient to handle. It consists in a new combination of three cush ioned plates, of which one constitutes the table-top, the sofa or chair back, and also part of the bed-bottom, according to the position in which it is placed.
A in the drawing represents the supportingframe of my improved article of furniture. It consists of a kind of stool or settee, cushioned on top along its entire extent, and also provided with a pendent cushion, B, in front. The cushion a of the stool A constitutes the seat of the chair or sofa, shown in Fig. 2, while the cushion B, which is hinged in front to the seat, is suspended in front, as shown in the same figure. To the projecting end pieces I) I) of the chair or sofa is, by two pair of pins, (1 d and e e, secured the chair or sofa back 0, which is cushioned in front, but of a plain'wooden reverse. The pins (1 0 pass through flanges or ribs ff that project from the ends of the back 0. D is a drawer, arranged under the seat a, and concealed by the pendent cushion B.
When a chair or sofa of this kind is to be converted into a table, it is only necessary to withdraw the lower pins ea-nd swing the back 0 on (I, so that it will rest horizontally upon the end pieces I), as in Fig. 1. The pins 0 are then reapplied, but through holes in f that were formerly near the top of the chair-back.
WVhen the chair or sofa is to be converted into a bed, the upper pins (1 are withdrawn, and the back 0 swung down into line with the cushion a. The drawer D is moved back under the part 0 to sustain it in this horizontal position, as shown in Fig. 3. The cushion B is next swung up into a horizontal position, and has legs E E hinged to it that will support it. The cushion-surfaces of B, A, and (J are thus all in line horizontally, and constitute an ample and coinmodious bed-bottom.
The bed-clothes can be kept in the drawer while the device is used as a table or sofa;
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by- Letters Patent The cushioned frame A, hinged frame B, back 0, and drawer D, combined with end pieces I; 1), pins (1 e, and ribs ff, as and for the purpose described.
DAVID KATZENSTEIN.
