Description

N. LLEWELLYN.
ACETYLENE MINERS LAMP. @PPucmoN FILED Dc.|a. 1916,
Patnted Aug. 21, 1917.
Simac/1g Toi-allS @ainesville`,"in l th y May encara: Bel itlnowr'i i tha/'t3 1I, 'NELsoN LLEWELLYN, a cltizenlfof t ed States, residing at State fof vh/,Iisso'uri have invented new and useful improvements in Acetylene Minersy Lampsv oftiwhich: el "following is a speci- Th'is'inventio relates to improvements in acetylene lamps d more especially with reference'"?'to improvements in acetylene lamps' such asnare' use dvby miners7 the object of the `invention'"being to provide a iilter for 'use linthe carbid holding and generating bowl ofthe laiiipand between the threaded' nipplev of thelbowl'and the threaded cap ofv the 1 water supplytaliik and so constructed and"arrangedas't'lter the gas while the "same ispassing tothe burner pipes and to also keeplthewaterlsupply pipe clear and cause steamto be ya plied to the threaded connection between t e bowl and the water supply tank andtliereby prevent dust from litrom the "feed controlling valve rod 9 `extends down settling in said threaded connection and interfering with the assembling and disassembling of the lamp.
The invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
, mit.
In the accompanying drawings:
ligure 1 is avertical circular section of the bowl of an acetylene miners lamp provided with a filter constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention.
lFig. 2 is a detailed elevation, partly in section, of the filter.
The miners lamp here shown is of the usual construction now in common use and comprises the carbid holding and generating bowl 1 and the water supply tank 2. The bowl is provided in its upperA side with the threaded nipple 3 and the tank is provided at its lower side with' the threaded cap 4 for engagement with said nipple, to eifect a threaded connection between-the bowl and -the tank and enable them to be separated when desired. The usual gas dome 5 is in the upper portion of the cap under the bottom of the tank and the burner pipe 6 leads from said dome and is provided with the usual jet ti 7. A water feed lpipe 8 depends ottom of the tan The water through the pipe 8 and is arranged `in the guide tube 10 which depends from the top of' the ank. The ank tube has the, usuari.
unty of Harrison andy filler opening ll'vand hinged closure 12 therefor. The hook 1'3 for attaching the lamp to thevminersV cap is lon one side of the'tank and cap 4.` 'f
iIn accordance with my inventionv I provlde a filter 14 which is preferably made of lsheet metal and which comprises a pan 15 .and a spout 16y which extends downwardly from the center of the pan.v lThe pan is of such size that'its wall 17 lits in the nipple 3 of the bowl. Swaidwall has outstanding sheet metal lianges v18 to engage over the upper endet the nipple and between same and the opposing portion of the cap -4 s'o that the center is firmly clamped between the nipple and cap. The wall is also provided 'in its outer side with gas filtering grooves 19 which establish gas connection between the bowl and the gas dome 5.
The water feed tube 8 extends throug the spout 16. The spout is tapered downwardly and is provided with a correspondingly tapered member 20 which is adjustably yitted thereon so that the length of the vspout may be varied according to the depth of the bowl. The spout is provided with an out-struck tongue 21 and the adjustable member 20 has an opening 22'through which the tongue extends. Hence the member .20 may .be adjustid as desired and the tongue when bent reversely after being passed through the opening 20 serves to secure the member 20 to the spout at the right adjustment.
The member 2O has a contracted opening 23at its lowerl end for the passage of the lower end of the valve Ifod l0 and is also provided near its lower end with `openings 24.
The gas is ltered by passin through the grooves 19 and the openings ormed between the flanges 18. The steam which lis generated while the water is passing through the lower end of the filter spout by the heat of the moistened carbid is permitted to escape into the carbid through the openings 24 and from which the steam ,passes up through the lter spout into the pan ofthe Afilter and also passes up from the bowl l through the filtering grooves 19, together with the gas, and condenses. The flanges 18 prevent carbid dust from settling between the nipple and the cap and binding them together.
It will be understood that the filter remains in the cap 4 when the dome'is unscrewed from the tank, the fianges 18 of the filter pan engaging in the threaded loop of the cap 4.
While I have here shown and described a referred form .of my -invention I would iiave it understood that changes may be made in the form, proportion and construction of the several parts Without-departing from the spirit of my invention and within the scope of the appended claims.
lHaving thus described my invention, I c aim:
1. In combination with an acetylene gas lamp comprising a carbid holdin and generating bowl having a threaded nipple at its upper side and a water. supply tank having a threaded capk on its lower side to engage with the nipple, and also provided with adepending water feed tube and a controllingl valve rod in said tube; a filter comprising a pan arranged in the nipple of the bowl and having its wall spaced from the'wall of the nipple and provided.V with outstanding flanges to engage between the nipple and cap the said filter being further provided with filtering grooves in the outer side of its wall and with openings between said anges and being further provided with a depending spout in which the water feed tube is arranged, said spout having a contraoted opening at the lower end for the passage of the valve rod and being also provided with steam discharge openings near its lower end.
2. In combination with an acetylene gas lamp comprising a carbid holding and generating bowl having a threaded nipple in its upper side and a water supply tank having a threaded cap on its lower side to engage with ythe nipple of the bowl and also provided with a depending water feed tube and a control valve rod in said tube; a 'filter coprising a pan arranged in the nipple of the bowl and having its wall spaced from the wall of the nipple and provided with outstanding flanges -to en a/ge 'between the nipple and cap, the said lilgter being further provided with filtering grooves in; the outer side of its wall and with ppenings between said anges and being u'tlewr provided with a longitudinally adjustable depending spout in which the Water feed tube is arranged, said spout having a contracted opening at its lower end for the passage of the valve rod and being also provided with steam escape openings near its lower end.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
NELSON LLEWELLYN.
