'specification of Letters rat-ent.

Application sied August a9, 1916. serial No. 117.441.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l., keine KU'NATH, a
subject of the German `llmperor, and a resiof comparatively few parts which can be `readily shipped or stored while in flat condition and which can be readily assembled to provide ahighly ornamental and exceed- `ingly durable basket for the reception of waste paper and the like.
In order to produce the desired result, use is made of a body consisting of a sheet of flexible material adapted to be bent into tubular form, fastening devices at the ends of the sheet for fastening the said sheet ends togetherin overlapping relation, supporting and retaining means on the inner face of thesaid body near the lower end thereof, a slip cover open at both ends and inclosing the said body, the ends of the slip cover telescoping one into the other, and a bottom held within the said body on the said supporting` and retaining means.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view fof the waste paper basket;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional plan view of the same on the line 2-2 of Fig. 8;
Fig. 3 is a sectional side elevation of a portion of the waste paper basket;
Fig. l is a reduced perspective view of the body of the waste paper basket with the supporting and retaining means attached thereto and with the body in flat condition;
Fig. 5 is a reduced perspective view of the slip cover; and
Fig. 6 is a reduced plan view of the boti tom of the basket.
The basket or similar receptacle, in its general construction, consists of a body 10, a slip cover 11 `and a bottom 12 held in place within the body 10 by supporting and retaining devices 13 attached to the inner face of the bodyy 10 near the lower end thereof. The body 10 is made of a sheet of flexible material, such as cardboard, capable of being bent into tubular shape. The ends of the sheet forming the body 10 are provided with fastening devices such as-socket members 14 and stud members 15 adapted to engage one the other to fasten the ends together in overlapping relation, as plainly indicated in Fig. 2. The body 10 extends through and is completely hidden in the slip cover' 11 made of an outer member 16 and an inner lining 17 the outer member and the lining being fastened together at the upper and lower edges by ,stitches 18. The outer member 16 is made of a fabric material which is preferably ornamented by embroidery or the like, and the upper and lower edges of this member 1G extends over the top and bottom edges of the sheet forming the body 10, and the lining 17 is made of a suitable fabric lining material and is preferably loose or disposed in light folds, as plainly indicated in the drawings. The lining '17 extends over the supporting and fastening means 13 for holding the cover 11 in place. The bottom 12 is preferably made of a stiff material 20, such as cardboard or the like, and completely covered by a fabric material 21.
Each of the supporting and fastening devices 13 is preferably in the form shown in Figs. 3 and 4t, that is, each supporting and fastening device consists of a back plate 25 attached by rivets or other fastening means 26 to the inside of the body sheet 10 near the lower end thereof. The attaching plate 25 is provided with a shelf 27 for the bottom 12 to rest on, and from the upper end of the attaching plate 25 extends downwardly and inwardly a spring tongue 28 adapted to engage the top of the bottom 12 to hold the same securely in place and against upward movement. By reference to Fig. 3 it will be noticed that the lining 17 is sufficiently loose tov cover the supporting and retaining devices 13 and to allow the bottom 12 to engage the said devices.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the slip covers 11 may be made in variousstyles and provided with suitable and varying ornaments to suit the taste of a customer.
.After the customer has selected the desired slip cover, the seller can4 readily pull the slip cover over a body 10 while the latter is in flat condition and then the body 10 is bent into tubular shape and the ends fastened together by the fastening members 14a and 15.
The ends of the slip cover 1l are nowrreadily drawn over the overlapping ends of the body and telescoped one within theothei' so that the body l0 is completely inclosed Within the slip cover. The bottom 1'2is' next inserted .from `the top thereofyan'd pressed downward s'o 'as to temporarily press the spring tongues outwardly until the-bottom has passed the free end of the said l0 springtong'ues and rests on top ofthe shelf ,27. v Whenthe bottom reaches thiswposition the spring tongues 28 return and extend'with theiry free ends abovethe top ofthe bottom l, l2 ythus holding the latter i securely .in posi- A tionespecially against falling out, when the basket isturned upside down for emptying itscon t`ents.
The waste paper basketshown and dey,scribed consists ofv comparatively'few parts which can be shipped or stored while inliat 30 l bent into ytubular form, fastening devices at the yendsof the sheet for fastening th-esheet ends together, a slip cover` inclosing the said body and having an outer ornamental member and an inner lining and a bottom detachably' held in said body.
l 2. A receptacle, comprising a body made rrrof ia." sheet of flexible material adapted to be bent into tubular form, fastening devices at fthereof, a' slipl cover open at,l both ends and inclosingthe .said body, the` ends of the slip cover teleseoping one'iiito the other, and a `bottom held on the said supporting and i-e- .taining means. i y 8. A receptacle, comprising a body made ofa sheet of flexible material adapted to be vbent into tubular form, fastening devices at the ends of the sheet for fastening the said v sheet' ends together 'in overlapping v relation,
lsupporting andi'etaining means on the inner vface of the said body near the lowerend thereof, a slip cover openatboth ends and inclosing the said body, the ends of the slip cover telescoping one into the other, the said slip cover having an outer ornamental mem- .ber andan inner lining, the latter extending 'loosely over the said retaining means, and a bottom, engaging at'itsfedge'the saidsupporting and retaining means and the said linino. f i Y iiD-INE KUNATH.
