CHARLES W. IRION, OF HUSTED, COLORADO.
GUN-SIGHT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 21, 1917.
Application led November 4, 1916. Serial No. 129,477.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. IRroN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Husted, in the county of El Paso and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gun-Sights; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has for its object to provide an. improved gun sight, which will quickly attract the eye of the gunner and enable him to easily and accurately aim the gun at an object.
Another object is the provision of a gun sight of the crossed bar or wire type embodying meanswhereby the wires may be quickly removed and inexpensively replaced when damaged.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consistsin the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 represents a front elevation, partly in section, of the improved gun sight,
Fig. 2 represents a vertical sectional view therethrough, and
Fig. 3 represents a fragmentary sectional vew on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 5 indicates a ring of adequate diameter which constitutes the body or main support of the gun sight, and is formed integral with or rigidly connected to a base 6, which is adapted for connection with the barrel of the fire arm, not shown.
The ring 5 is formed at four equidistant points with internally screw threaded apertures 7, receiving fastening screws 8, provided with enlarged flat heads Sa, having the usual diametrical slot therein for the reception of the blade of a screw driver or other tool for facilitating adjustment of the screws.
The portions of the walls of the openings 7 adjacent one edge of the ring 5 are formed with longitudinal grooves 9 of such width and depth as to snugly receive the sight wires or rods l0, which cross each other at the axis of the ring 5 and are provided with angular outer terminals 11, lying against the outer surface of the ring 5 and rigidly secured in position thereon by the heads of the screws 8. When damaged, the rods or wires l0 maybe removed from the ring, subsequent to the removal of the screws 8, and a new length of wire may be substituted therefor. In applying a new wire to the gun sight, one terminal thereof is bent at right angles, subsequent to its insertion through the openings 8 in the ring 5 and the angular' terminal thereof is moved into engagement with the outer surface of the ring and secured in position by advancing the screw 8 received within that opening. The opposite terminal of the wire is subsequently bent back against the opposed surface of the ring 5 and is fastened in position by the head Eia of the screw 8, thereby rigidly securing the wire in position in the ring.
lVhat I claim is:
l. A gun sight including a ring having pairs of diametrically opposed openings therein, sight wires positioned in said openings, and screws inserted in said openings and securing said wires in position therein.
2. A gun sight including a ring having pairs of diametrically opposed openings therein, sight wires positioned through the openings and having angular outer terminals overlying the outer surface of the ring, screws fitted in said openings, and heads carried by said screws securing the angular terminals of the sight wires in position on the ring.
3. A gun sight including a ring having pairs of diametrically opposed openings provided with grooves in the walls thereof, crossed sightwires removably positioned in said grooves having angular outer terminals overlying the outer surface of said ring, screws fitted in said openings, and heads carried by said screws securing the angular terminals of the wires against the outer surface of said ring.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES WV. IRION.
Witnesses CLARENCE I-I. NoBLo, PETE II. FERRIL.
