SUCTION CLEANING-MACHINE.
Application filed January 29, 1910, Serial No..540,'795.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, DAVID P.v Moonnand 3nd rest thereon of its own weight, a handle being pivoted to the'casing and operably connected to the suction creating device, so that when the machine is pushed or pulled, that is, reciprocated back andforth .by the operator, the handle will be raised and low ered, thus operating the suction creating device and guiding the machine, the action of the suction creating device drawing the air, dust laden, through the suction head, which is in operative relation with the surface traversed by the machine.
To clearly understand our invention, so as to readily appreciate the various advantages amachine constructed accordingly will have, reference must be had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevationof a machine embodying our invention with a portion of the casing removed to show the pump.
' Fig. 2 is a top plan view.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a modified form.
Fig. 4: is a side elevation of another modified form employing a bellows pump.
Fig. 5 is a side elevation of another modified form with the rear portion of the easing removed to show one of the bellows pumps, and
Fig. 6 is a top plan view Fig. 7 is a sectional view line VIIVII of Fig. 6.
Referring to the drawings The numeral 1 designates a dust collecting and air filtering casing, having the casters or wheels 2, and having mounted for operable relation therewith the suction head support 3, and self-adjusting suction head 4, which is of the type set forth in our apthereof.
taken on the substantially operate the pump.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug, 21 1917.
Renewed January 18, 1917. Serial No. 143,196.
plication filed January 27th, 1910, Serial No. 510,391, whereby the mouth thereof is always upon. the surface traversed by the machine, and rests so lightly and freely as to not retard the machine. The casing is provided with the clean-out door 5, and the rear extension 6, in or upon which is seated the doubleeacting diaphragm suction pump 7, which is in communication with the casing through the medium of the two valved inlet pipes 8. This pump is covered by the casing or dome 9, and has its piston or diaphragm operating rod 10, passing upwardly through the casing, with its upper end secured pivotally U-shaped or bailed handle 12, which is pivotally secured to the lugs 13, or in anypractical manner to the casing, or part of the machine, or pulling action upon the handle as the machine is reciprocated, or moved back and forth will cause the machine to glide over the surface to'be ously cause the handle to rise andfall and The extension 6, is casters 2', and may be prevent the rear mounted upon weighted if necessary, to end of the machine the floor,as' the handle is pulled upwardly. In Figs-3 and 4, we deviate slightly from the construction above described, mounting the dust collecting and air-filtering casing 14, upon the casters 15, and mounting the diaphragm double acting pump 16, Fig. 3, or the double acting bellows pump 17 Fig. 4:, upon and supported by said casing. The casing in these instances is provided with the suction head 4: and support 3. handle 18, similar to the handle 12 is employed, the lever 19, connected to the pump piston rod 20, Fig. 3, being fulcrumed upon the standard 21, having its reduced end 22, slidably mounted in the guide 23, of the handle, whereby the movement of the handle will operate the pump. In Fig; l,
the movable member 24, of the bellows whereby the pushing to the cross-bar 11, of the cleaned, and simultanevices,
pushed .cleaned,vtl1u s making said handle accompli'sh' the double function ofvpropelling or to draw air through the pipes 26,their movable members 27, each being provided with a link or rod 28, which operably connects each bellows to its member 12, of the U shaped description, it is evi forms herein shown provided with a pivoted guiding handle, which is guiding the machine and pump.
What. we claim, as new, is
1. A I portable suction cleaningunachine, having a body mounted upon wzheels a suction nozzle carried "by the body and disposed to engage the surface traversed, a suction creating device carried by thebody,.-and a "operating the vertically swinging handle I pivoted to the body for propelling temachine back and forth, said handle being operablyconnected v to the suction creating device, whereby-the rise and fall of the handle during the back and forth movement ef'the machine actuates the suction creating device while the. machine 111' motion.
in a vertically reciprocatory adapted to be operated by an alternate'back and forth movement over the surface, the comblnatlon of a suction creatlng device, a a nozzle operably carried by the machine in its path of travel, and a rearwardly extending vertically swinging handle for propelling the machine and operating the suction creatingdevice, the said handle being operably connected to the suc- .tion creatin'gdevice and mounted to permit of a movementfronm the surface when the, -inach-ine isepulled backwardly and a move :ment toward the surface when the-machine is. pushed forwardly.
d. In a portable suction-cleaning machine, the combination of a suction creating device, a handle operably connected to the suction creating device, the said handle being piv- .oted to and-extending rearwardl'y of the machine to permit the machine to be propelled oventhe surface thereby,- and mounted to permit of amovementfromth-e surface when the wmachine is 1 pulled backwardly and .a movement toward the surface when: the machine 1s pushed forwardly, and asuction .noz'zle yield-ingly connected to and carried vby the machine. f. 1 In testimony whereof we aflix our signatures inpresen'ce of two witnesses.
