IMPROVEMENT IN LAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.123,749,' dated February 13, 1872.
.To all lwhom it may concern:
` reference being had to the accompanying drawing and the letters of reference marked thereon making part of this specification, in which is represented a vertical sectional view of the lamp.
The nature of my invention consists in securing in the reservoir of the lamp a tube, so arranged that all the inflammable and explosive gases generated shall be discharged at the base of the lamp, in ,combination with a perforated flange and` drip-cup.
The great advantage of this arrangement is, that any of the oils now in general use, such as naphtha, Src., can be burned with perfect The great danger with oils of the class referred to arises from the fact that the intense heat of the burner generates from the oil in the reservoir a gas of a most iniiammable nature, and which explodes the moment the iame or other blaze is brought in Contact therewith; all danger of which with my improvement is securely guarded against, as the gas escapes at the base of the reservoir, and passes Cif through the perforated ange; and which, in addition to the drip-cup which receives and retains all the oil which, in filling or moving the lamp, may escape by the gas-tube, furnishes a neat and effective device for rendering the lamp perfectly Safe, no matter what the character of the oil or uid burned in the same may be.
The construction and operation of my invention is as follows: A is the reservoir of the lamp, which is constructed of any desired form and of any suitable material. B is the burner, and may be of any of thenumerous approved patterns. This burner is screwed into the neck of the reservoir in the usual manner, and is in no particular new, excepting that its joints are all air-tight. G is the wick-Winder, and, instead of working in open orifices cut through the wall of the burner, it is secured in a close Socketbearing7 c, and an open sleeve, c. On the shank of the wick-Winder is a coil-spring, D, which so presses on a rubber washer, d, that encircles the wick-Winder as to form an airtight connectionor joint at the mouth of the sleeve.v E is a tube, secured in the lower wall of thereservoir, and running verticallyup through the same to near its dome, as clearly shown in the drawing. Around the lower section of the base of the lamp is an annular flange, a, over which fits a drip-cup, A. This flange is so perforated at a as to permit the escape of the gas as it descends from the tube E, which both discharges the gas and supplies air to till the reservoir as the oil is consumed.
