MARIA LOUISA COBB VON AFFNERDE v-EssnY, orwasnrneronjnrsrnrcr or 1 COLUMBIA. i. i
' MEDiGAMENT-CONTAINER,
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MARIA LOUISA COBB VON HAFFNER DE Vnssnr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have'invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Medicament-Containers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make'and use the same. I i This invention relates to medicinal apparatus, and more particularly to a type of device adapted to be held in the hand and which is charged with a medicament of'a volatile naturecapable of giving off fumes for remedial purposes when the device,
which may be termed an inhaler, is applied tothenostrils, so that the fumes from the medicament in the inhaler may pass to the membrane of the nostrils and may afiect various branches of the nerve system and other organic structures as may be deter.-
mined by the nature of the charge of medicament within the inhaler. Y
It is one of the objects of the present invention to provide an improved device of this type so as to facilitate the volatilization of the medicament, this being accomplished through the instrumentality of heat received from the hand of the user of the device, and it is therefore an object of the invention to provide an. inhaler having a jacket preferably made of a metal of such properties that it will absorb and retain heat from the palm of the hand of the user when the inhaler is clasped in the hand, the heat taken up by the jacket being transmitted to a medicament which is preferably contained in a removable basket of foraminous characteristics.
It is another object of the present invention to provide an inhaler comprising a jacket preferably of pliant material, such, for instance, as tin-foil or thin copper sheet so'that the jacket is capable of being crushed closely in upon the inserted basket containing a medicament, and it is a further object of the invention to provide the basket with a device or means for facilitating its removal from the jacket.
With these and other objectsin view as will be rendered manifest in the following specification, one form of the invention is Specification of Letters Patent.
j Application filed March so, 1917. Serial No. 158,716; b v
' Patented Aug.
illustrated :in the accompanying drawings, 1n which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view, partlybroken away, showing the inhaler with the- 1 cap thereof removed, andv j I F1gu2 is a perspective view of'the detached, basket showingithe vwire attached thereto by which" it may .be removed from the opened larger end of the jacket;
My present invention contemplates a de vice 1n' the form of an inhaler which is pro- .vided preferably with an outer jacket 2 of suitable proportions and design, and which Q preferably, though not necessarily, isformed of a ductile or pliant material, suchas tinfoil .or thin copper sheet, the jacket being provided at one end with an externally threaded nipple 3 adapted to receive and be closed by the'remo'val of cap 4:- WVhen the jacket is in the form of apliant tin-foil structure, it may be closed-at its upper opposite'end by being rolled'o'ver'or foldedupon itselfas: at 5 so as to substantially inclose a removable basket 6. This basket is of such diameter and length as to approximately snugly fit within the chamber of the jacket 2, and is preferably formed of. wire gauze material so that the fumes coming from an lnclosed medicament may readily pass from the chamber of the jacket out through the carriedby a fibrous or absorbentcore'indi-" cated at 7 upon which the wire gauze formmg the basket 6 mayberolled or into which the basket core 7 may be passed from either end,
and after the coreis inserted within the basket the ends of the latter may be folded over as at 8 to prevent the accidental removal or dislodgment of the charged core from the interior of the basket.
One of the features of the invention is to provide means for facilitating the removal of the medicament basket 6 from the jacket 2 when the end of the latter through which the basket 6 may be inserted is opened. To' that end the basket is shown as provided with any suitable form of purchase device represented as a wire 9 which is secured in any suitable manner to the basket structure, the wire being capable of being folded or rolled into contact position adjacent the end of the basket 6 toward the closable bot tom end of the jacket 2, as is illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 1. lVhen it is necessary or desirable to remove the medicament basket 6 from the container, it is only neces-- structed of a material which will readily absorb the heat from the palm of the closed hand in which the inhaler may be grasped, this heat being transmitted to the interior of the jacket 2 and to the medicament contained within the basket, and its core, this heat effecting the volatilization of the medicament so that while the inhaler is held to the nose the heat from the hand of the operator is effective to generate vapors havin g the remedial properties desired.
What I claim is:
1. An inhaler and medicament container comprising a basket of wire gauze having an-absorbent core saturated with a volatile medicament, and a foil'jacket, folded over and incasing the basket, having a constricted nipple with a removable closure, the nipple being applicable to the nostril when the closure is removed to permit inhalation of the fumes from the medicament.
2. An inhaler and medicament container comprising a basket of wire gauze having an absorbent core'saturated with a volatile medicament, and a pliant" jacket, closed over and incasing the basket, having a constricted nipple with a removable closure, the nipp'le being applicable to the nostril when the closure is removed to permit inhalation of the fumes from the medicament,
3. An inhaler and medicament container comprising a basket of wire gauze having an absorbent core saturated with a volatile medicament, and a pliant metallicljacket, closed over and incasing the basket, having constricted nipple with a removable clo sure, thenipple being applicable to the nostril when the closure is removed to permit inhalation of the fumes from the medicament.
4:, An inhaler and medicament container comprising a basket of wire gauze having an absorbent core saturated with a volatile medicament, and a collapsible tubular foil jacket, rolled over and incasing the basket, having a constrictednipple with. a removable closure, the nipple being applicableto the nostril when the closure isremoved to permit inhalation of the fumes from the medicament, the basket-having foldable means by which it may be Withdrawn from the unrolled opened larger end of the collapsed jacket. I
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
