Application filed January 19,1917. SeriaI No. 143,355.
To all whom it may concern. Be it known that LLOWELL D. ANDRos, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepinand StatebfMinnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in School-Desks; of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to desks of the type generally used sehools, colleges and the like. 4
' The object of the invention is toprovide I that the compartment may be maintained 'in a cleanly and sanitary condition.
' Another object of the invention is to pro vide a desk capable of being adjusted to suit'children of various'sizes'inorderthat it may be positioned to the best possible advantage, thus preventing the necessity of the -userworkiugin a bent or cramped position,
and by this'means promoting thehealth, convenience and welfare ofthe children."
' A still further object is the provision of a"desk, which, isneat and attractive in'fap pearance and which may "be easily and quickly adjusted, the adjusting means per 'Initting the amount of adjustment being determined and'when adjusted 'may"be* securely locked in position;
With the above and other ob ects in view the invention consists of the following combination' an'd"arrangement of parts, herein after more fully described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which;
Figure l is a side elevation of a single pedestal desk constructed in accordance with the present invention and showing the book compartment in section, the lid thereof being shown raised by dotted lines; ,V
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail vertical sectional viewthrough the adjustable pedestal, showing the means of adjusting and looking the desk to different heights;. and
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of another form of desk, illustrating the method of constructing the book compartment with a desk of this type.

single pedestal 11, secured to the topQlO preferably-bymeanso f "a bracket 12, which is-shownas secured'to'the underside otthe saidtop, this bracket also torming'a'means tor'securing the pedestal thereto". The compartment which is indicated at 13.13 preferco extensive with "the front "edge of the t( p*aii dextends below the same a s-utlicientf distance to provide for the reception of books of the size of ordinary'text books;
One'fside' of thecomp'artment extends above the rep of the desk'as shown at'14, and has hinged thereto as at lf) a lid 16. This lid is- 'provided with an L- 'shaped strip 17 falong its glower' edge"toforni a stop for contact with the upper edge o-fthe' bracket 12. The
arrangement ofthe "upper'portio'n of the compartment l3-prmits the books which are arranged therein upon their "ends to "be sufficiently exposedfinview of the'pupil toenable him to select the one desired, without searching beneath the'top of-the desk, as is usual in th-et'ypeof desk constructed with a' ho rizontal bookcomp'artnintl \Vhenthe books are arranged with thetallest one at i the rear of thefl cornpartment, all ofthe various books maybe exposed to' view-to permiteheready selection or the one desired: The bottom of the compartment is formed of a peijfoiated or reticulated member-181st that should dust or dirt enter the compartment it will readily sift through.
In order to permit the top of the desk to be adjusted to suit persons'of various sizes, the pedestal 11 is composed of telescopic sections 19 and 20, the section 19being secured The said sectionl9 is adjustable in the section 20,1and for this purpose is provided with adjusting teeth .21, these teeth being spaced at a distance between centers of.
about one-half an inch, in order that the amount of adjustment may be determined by moving the section 19 the desired num- .to or formed integral with the front 12.
ber of teeth. Secured within the section 20,
in the path of the teeth 21 is a spring pawl 22, which is provided with a tooth 23 for engagement with the teeth 21. Also carried by the section 20 is a locking screw 24k, the shank of which is positioned to engage the rear of the tooth 23 for the purpose of locking the section 19 in its adjusted position.
Various changes in the form and proportion of the invention may be made, as for example the book compartment may be arranged along one side of the top 10, or it may be applied to a type ofdesk different from the one just described. In Fig. 3 there .is illustrated one of such difierent type, the compartment being secured within the side standards 25 of the desk top 26 and the back of the seat for the pupil just in frontbeing secured against the front side of the book compartment.
It is of course understood that the pedestal,1l may be applied to chairs used in connection with the adjustable desk, or that any other adjustable form of chair may be used.
In the modification shown in Figs. 4: and 5, there is illustrated a desk supported upon adjustable side standards 30. These standards comprise a stationary member 31 and an adjustable member 32. The stationary member includes spaced legs 33, which are joined together by connecting bars 34:, the topmost connecting bar being provided with a vertical member 35, which, together with the extended ends 36 of the legs 33 form projecting portions which are adapted to be engaged by the tubular members 37 of the adjustable member 32 of the side standards. The member 35 is formed with teeth 38, after the manner of the teeth 21 previously described, and these teethv are adapted to be engaged by a spring pawl 39 which is secured to and projects through an opening 40 formed in the central tubular member 37. This central member 37 is provided. with a yoke 41, in which operates a set screw 42 for locking the side standards in their adjusted position. The adjustable member-32 is secured to the underside of the top of the desk by means of the bracket 43, which is formed with sockets 4% to receive each of the tubular members 37. The desk top 45 is provided with a book compartment 46, similar to the one described in connection with the preceding form of desk, the said compartment being'provided with a hinged lid 17 as before explained. In Fig. 4 of the drawings there is illustrated the idea of book arrangement to which. this style of desk is adapted, the said arrangement permitting all of the books to be viewed for the purpose of permitting a ready selection.
From the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings it is believed that the objects and construction of the invention will be apparent, and further description is deemd unnecessary.
Having described the invention, what is claimed is;
1. The combination with a desk,.of an adjustable pedestal comprising telescopic sections, adjusting teeth formed upon one of said sections, a spring pawl carried by the other section for engagement with said teeth and a locking screw carried by the last mentioned section and engaging said pawl to lock said sections in their ad usted position.
2. The combination with two members telescopically arranged, of corrugations carried by the inner member, the outer member being provided with an opening, a resilient element removably secured upon the outer member, a detent carried by the resilient element and adapted to extend through said opening for engagement with said corrugations and an adjusting screw engaging the resilient element to hold the members in, adj usted osition.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature.
LO'WELL D. ANDRUS.
