vlllaterial,"of which the following is a specification;
- This.invention-relates to improvements in ap aratus' for eitecting the destructive distillation of carbonaceous materials, in acdescribed in 00-. filed Nov. 24,
means for accurately controlling the temperature in each of a series of different zones in a retort according to the distillates required from the particular zones.
Other objects of the invention will appear more fully hereinafter.
The'invention consists substantially in the construction, combination, location, and arrangement of parts, all as will be more as shown in the accompanying drawing, and finally pointed out in the appended claim.
In the construction and operation of a distillation retort it has previously been proposed to withdraw different volatile products from diiferent parts of the distillation retort heated to different temperatures, and quickly to condense such products simultaneously. The present invention relates to distillation apparatus operating on this principle; and it consists in a simple and efiective construction and-arrangement whereby the desired results are secured, and which Will now be described more in detail.
Figure 1 of the accompanying drawing illustrates the improvement as applied to the invention of copending patent application Serial No. 63,335, filed November 24:, 1915, and Fig. 2 is a plan view Referring to said chamber retort carried in a furnace setting having end walls A and E, and the partition walls, 13, C, D, definitely dividing up the surface heating tlues into compartments 9, r, 8, t, and separate burners u, 'v, w, w, are arranged in the respective compart ments, each controlled by a supply regulilting valve F, G, ll. 1. A coi'iveyer screw is shown in the drawing for slowly convoy-- Specification of Letters Patent.

ing the carbonaceous material through the retort in the known manner, means maybe employed for this purpose.
The several supply pipes are connected which may in turn be supplied either from the gassupply 0, coming from the retort r1. lhrough the con densers, per the pipe n, or from an independent supply .l. or rom both. lhe gases from pipe a return to the pipe n, the gas being drawn by any suitable pump, such as the eentri lugal pump Z, tln'ough the pipe 'n' and are delivered to the pipe R connecting to n.- intern'icdiately the gas is passed through cooling ap 'iaratus of any suitable a cylinder with Water trays, or dropping spray--indicated by. Q, in which its ten'iperature is reduced so as to for use as a condensing returned through the con- This separates oil, tar, etc, carried by the gases leaving the pipe n, which may have been only incompletely removed by the ejector condensers.
The gas passage preferably has a branch. S through which gas is taken to the heating gas pipe 79 as it isnot necessary to be cooled, if this is to be used for heating.
As above stated volatile matters are directly and simultaneously removed from the retort a by pipes 1, 2, 3, a, such volatile matters varying according to the temperature in the several zones of the retort, and they are immediately conr' lensedin a series 0 e]ector condensers 'e, f, g, h, by cool gases medium when densers e, f, f],
removed through the pipes 2', j, is, Z.
K, L, M, N, are openings from each of the heating compartments into a common flue T to the chimney 0 arranged by the Serial No. 104,776. "i
but other;
supplied from the pipe n and the distillates side of the retort, or some other convenient position, but by the use of dampers and auxor by connecting passages such as are shown dotted through the Walls B, C, D, the hot gases may be carried from one zone to another, dampers being provided in any usual form to vary the path of the combustion gases as'desired. A suitable example of the flue design is indicated in Fig. 2; K, L, M, N showin the dampered openings to the flueT; w ich may be of sheet metal, and 7), 0, (Z the dampers regulating" the openings through], the partition walls 7 l}, C, D.
Air for combustion 'ii'paybe conveniently amovable fire bricks when not required, or
by means of dampers of ordinary design. The final product from the conveyer will be coke, and in order to get this of a harder character, a chamber strewn dotted at t may be employed in which the coke coming out or the delivery chute is heated up to about 800 degrees 6., the said chamber being provided with an additional heating burner 11 controlled by valve Y.
Although a single conveyer chamber forms a unit in itself, there may of course be several units in a complete plant.
By means of this invention successive tones of the retort may proceed either with a gentle and a successive temperature increase, or by temperature diiierences of considerable amount, or again by an increase and then a decrease as may be desired.
' esaeee What I claim as new and useful and of my own invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In an apparatus for distilling volatile matters from solid carbonaceous material, the combination of an elongated retort, a plurality of heating compartments surrounding successive portions of the length thereof, thereby establishing Zones in said retort, independently regulatable heating means in 'each of said compartments, a conveyer in the said retort for conveying a solid material through the length of said retort, said conveyor substantially filling V the cr0ss-section of said retort, ejector condensers, a plurality of vapor outlets one connected to each of the several zones of the retort, said outlets each being connected to an ejector condenser, and means ior suplin cool 'ases to each of said sector
