' Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug. 1 1, 1917.
Application filed December 16, 1916. Serial No. 137,338.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I. FREDERICK B. HAY- DEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Belleville, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates more particularly to small oil-burning lamps used for nightlights, candle-lamps and like purposes in which a small flame or soft light is desired, and the object of the invention is to provide a lamp of this character of extremely simple construction, which may be manufactured easily and economically and operated efficiently.
The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement by which the above objects are attained, to be hereinafter described and claimed.
The accompanying drawings form a part of this specification and show an approved form of the invention.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the lamp arranged to serve as a candle-lamp and equipped with a shade, the latter being shown in vertical section.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the lamp alone.
Fig. 3 is corresponding plan view.
Fig. 4 is a vertical section of the lamp,
v with the burner in place and shown in elevation.
Similar letters of reference indicate the same parts in all the figures.
The entire lamp is preferably of clear transparent glass, but may be of any suitable material, and comprises a font, burner support, chimney, and shade support, all formed integrally with each other.
The font A is cylindrical or slightly tapered toward the bottom and terminates above in a contracted neck B from which extends an outwardly projecting upwardly curved flange C, forming with the neck B, a support for a burner M, and the flange is continued upwardly in approximately cylindrical form, of a greater diameter than the font, to serve as a chimney or protector D for the burner flame.
The chimney D terminates in an annular shoulder E formed by an inward curve of the upper margin, serving as a support for a shade N which may be of any suitable material and form.
The burner M is of a well known simple glow-lamp type, made of glass and having a tube M extending downwardly into the font A and containing a wick M In the drawing, Fig. 1, the lamp is shown as supported by inserting the font A in a holder L of candle form, having the usual spring-arms L by which it may be engaged with a candlestick, not shown, but it will be understood that any suitable form of holder or support may be employed. By making the lamp of transparent glass in a single piece it may be manufactured at an extremely low cost and its parts are all adapted to serve efficiently the purposes for which they are designed.
The glass may be tinted in whole or in part, or the chimney D may be of transparent glass with the font A opaque or translucent, and any suitable form of burner may be employed.
The forms and proportions of the parts or members may be varied in adapting the invention to various conditions of service. i
I claim 1. As an improved article of manufacture, an oil-containing font shaped to removably fit a support therefor, and a chimney joined to said font by a contracted neck and all formed integrally of each other, said neck and chimney formed to receive and support an oil burner therein.
2. As an improved article of manufacture, an oil-containing font shaped to removably fit a support therefor, and a chimney joined to said font by a contracted neck and all formed integrally of each other, said neck and chimney formed to receive ar-d support an oil burner therein and said chimney formed at its upper edge exteriorly with an annular shoulder adapted to support a shade.
3. The combination with a holder, of an oil-containing font and of elongated dependent form loosely receivable therein and having formed integral therewith a chimney, with a contracted neck between the chimney and font to support a burner of the Wick type.
4. The combination with a holder of tubular elongated form open at one end and at the other end provided with means for en-- gaging a support therefor, of an oil-containing font and of elongated dependent form,
loosely receivable therein and having formed ing font having an elongated dependent integral therewith a chimney, With a conbody adapted to fit Within said holder and 10 tracted neck between the chimney and font having a contracted neck portion to support to support a burner of the Wick type. v a burner of the Wick type.
5. The combination With a holder of elon- In testimony that I claim the invention gated tubular form open at one end and at above set forth I aiiiX my signature. the other end provided with means for engaging a support therefor, of an oil-contain- V FREDERICK B. HAYDEN.
