WITNESSES I f I ,ea l/VVE/VTOR TED STATE E T one FRAN'GIS GO E. FONSECA, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SMOKE-FILTER FOR CIGARS AND CIGARETTES.
To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, FRANoIsoo E. FONSECA, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and ImprovedSmoke- Filter for Cigars and Cigarettes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Among the principal objects which the present invention has in vieware: to provide a cigar, cigarette, or asimilar article with a suitable filter and support therefor; to divert the column of smoke from its'direct path of travel; to retard the rate of travel of the smoke admitted to the smokers mouth; toavoid transmission by infection;and to simplify the construction of the filter employed in the accomplishment of the abovestated objects.

Description. As seen in the drawings, the 'mouthiece with which a cigar or cigarette is provlded, is constructed from a suitable cardboard or the present in- Specification of letters Patent. Patented Aug. 14, 1917.

stifl" paper member 15.. The member 15 has formed at one end thereof, a tongue 16, which is spaced from the mainbody of the member 15, by a V-shaped cut 17. As seen best in Fig. 3 of the drawings, the tongue 16 is folded upon itself and upon the member 15, to form a stirrup or support for a filtering body, such as a small wad-of fiber 18. The fiber 18, as shown best in Fig. 4 of the drawings, is placedbetween the sides of the stirrup formed by the tongue 16, and is then rolled to form a "cylinder 19, as indicated in Fig. .1 of the drawings.
The cylinder 19 may be rolled around the outside of the cigarette wrapper 20, or may be, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, in-
serted in the end of said wrapper. In either event, the wrapper and mouth-piece are permanently united by means of a suitable adhesive.
In Figs. 5, 6 and 7 of the drawings, a
modified form of the invention is shown. The modification consists primarily in rollinga piece of paper to form a cylinder 21. The cylinder 21 has formed therein, a stir-.
rup produced from the tongue 16 in the manner above described. The cylinder 21 is then,
using the mouth-piece shown in Fi 8, it is I temporarily. attached to the cigar 2 It will be understood. that it is intended that a cigar-holder constructed in conformity with the present invention is for asingle use only.
It is obvious that with the mouth-piece constructed and arranged as herein disclosed, the smoke is compelled to pass through the fiber 18, and is diverted from its straight course of travel through the mouthpiece by the bend in the stirrup, to pass through the lateral passages at each side of the stirrup, and thence'tothe suction end of "the mouth-piece.
,Care'is taken in constructing these mouthpieces that the delivery end, not shown, be contractedor congested, the object being to furnish as large a passage for the smoke as is consistent with good construction and economy, In this manner, one of the 0b jects above stated is obtained, to wit the distribution of the smoke as delivered to the mouth of the smoker.
CZai/m.
A mouth piece comprising a paper cylinder; a narrow section of said cylinder being 'nae'mae bent upon itself to form a stirrup, said stirrup being arranged Within said cylinder and parallel to the axis thereof; and a fibrous material disposed Within said stirrup, said fibrous material and said stirrup being contracted by said cylinder, one end of said section being loosely held in said cylinder.
