W. G. KENDALL.
LIPSTICK HOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED JAN.25. 1911.
Patented Aug. 14, 1917.

LIP-STICK HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 25, 1917. Serial No. 144,509.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVILLIAM G. KENDALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lip-Stick Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to new and useful improvements in holders for lip sticks of rouge, the primary object of my invention being the provision of a neat, ornamental and serviceable lip stick holder which may be cheaply manufactured and readily assembled.
In this connection, a still further object of my invention consists in constructing a lip stick holder including a holder proper in the form of a tube, a tubular cap for closing one end of the holder, and a lip stick receiving follower movable within the holder to extend the stickwhich it carries beyond the holder for use.
Heretofore, it has been customary to thread a screw into the follower so that the head ofthe screw will project through a slot in the holder and serve as a knob or projection for reciprocating the follower within the holder to extend or retract the stick of rouge.
The cost of manufacturing these screws and the cost of assemblage when they are employed is high relative to the cost of the remainder of the article and the primary object of my invention is to do away with this screw by providing the follower with which performs all the functions of the screw which it replaces.
A still further object of this invention resides in the particular manner of forming that portion of the tongue projecting through the slot to give it sufficient strength and to at the same time afford a neat appearance.
With these and other objects in view, my
invention will be more fully ,described, illustrated inthe accompanying drawings, and
then specifically pointed out in the claim which is attached to and forms a part of this application.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved lip stick holder with the cap applied;
Fig. 2 is a strung out perspective v1ew of nal slot 13 terminating the holder with the cap removed, an alternate positionof the cap, when the device is in use, being shown in dotted lines;
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through the holder, showin the cap applied in the manner indicated 1n dotted lines in Fig. 2, the section being taken along the slot of the holder proper;
Fig. at is an unassembled perspective view of the holder proper and follower. Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawing by the same reference characters.
My improved lip stick holder includes the holder proper 10, follower 11 and cap 12. The holder 10 is preferably formed of sheet metal, plated or otherwise finished to give a neat and ornamental appearance and is in the form of a seamless tube, preferably elliptical in cross section, closed at one end and open at the other. vided throughout the greater portion of its length and along one side with a longitudiat its ends short of the ends of the holder. The cap 12 is also made of suitably plated or burnished sheet metal in the form of a seamless tube corresponding in cross sectional shape to the holder and proportioned to fit snugly over it. This cap is open at one end and closed at its opposite end and is in length to the length of the holder. If desired, it may be provided adjacent either end with outstruck annular beads 14 for the sake of ornamentation. Its open end is also provided with a notch 15 in one side adapted to aline with the slot 13 of the holder, as will be clear by reference to Fig. 30f the draw ings. The follower 11 is in the form of a seamless sleeve or ferrule open at one end but having its other end closed, as shown, to
seat the end of a stlck of lip rouge 17 Thls' slide therein and the rouge stick is proportionedso that one end will seat in the follower, being held thereto by one or more prongs 16 instruck from the follower, and so that the sticklas a whole may be retracted into the holder proper or projected beyond the open end of the holder to a more or less extent, as desired, through movement of the follower. The follower, at one side, is provided with a U-shaped cleft 18 todefine a tongue 19, the base por- This holder is pro Patented Aug. 14,1917.
preferably equal tion of which is adjacent the open end of the follower and the free end of which is adjacent the closed end thereof. This tongue is formed in the follower in such a manner that when the follower is located within the holder, the tongue will be disposed immediately below the slot 13.
In assembling the device, the follower is slipped into the open end of the holder with its closed end innermost and with its tongue in alinement with the slot 13. The free end of the tongue is then pried upwardly slightly through the slot 13, after which the tongue is rolled forwardly upon itself to provide a tubular abutment projecting be yond the outer face of the holder with its axis disposed at right angles to the axis of the holder. This tongue is preferably substantially equal in width to the width of the slot so that it will provide a support or guide for the follower, in use. Any convenient means for bending the tongue in the manner described may be followed. For instance, a fine rod having a split end may be utilized, the tongue being located between the forks or fingers formed by splitting the end of the rod and the rod being turned to wind the tongue about one of the fingers to provide the cylindrical abutment. If this is the method followed, that finger oi the rod about which the tongue is to be wound should, of course, be'properly shaped and proportioned to provide the desired abutment. Preferably, the tongue is rolled in such a direction that its free end is rolled downwardly toward the slot formed by striking out the tongue, as clearly shown in Fig. 3.
The employment of the above described lip stick holder will be readily understood by reference to the drawings and but a slight description is. believed to be necessary. When not in use, the cap isapplied in the manner shown in Fig. 1, the follower and, consequently, the lip stick being drawn into the innermost portion of the holder proper and the abutment of the follower seating in the notch 15 of the open end of the cap. In use, the cap is removed and the lip stick projected beyond the holder to any desired extent by pressure exerted against the abut ment or tongue 19 to advance the follower. If desired, the cap may be applied to the reverse end of the holder during use of the device to form a supplemental handle, this application being clearly shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 and in full lines in Fig. 3. After use, the lip stick is, of course, retracted into the holder through movement of the follower and the cap is reapplied in the manner shown in Fig. 1. The resilient eye or loop formed by rolling the tongue to produce the abutment will act to cushion the checking of the follower when the tongue reaches either end of the slot. This eye or loop will also serve as-a convenient means for attaching a chain.
It will of course be understood that I reserve the right to make any changes, within the scope of the appended claim, without in the slightest degree departing from the spirit of my invention. i
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A lip stick holder including a tubular holder proper, closed at one end, said holder being formed with a longitudinal slot terminating short of its ends, a follower sleeve slidable within the holder proper with that end adjacent the closed end of the holder proper formed to provide a seat against which a stick of rouge may abut, a tongue stamped out from the follower sleeve and projecting through the slot of the holder proper, the tongue being bent to provide a tubular abutment projecting beyond the holder proper and by means of which the sleeve maybe reciprocated within the holder roper, and a cap proportioned to fit snugly about the holder proper with one end open to receive the holder and the other closed. I
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
