My invention relates to the rolling of stesi sheet piling of the nature described in No. 923,110 of May 25, 1909, and
\ consists in a peculiarly formed and arranged guiding element to `insure of the proper introduction of thepiling to the rolls and in iinal pass to coperate with the rolls to insure ofthe true and uniform curvature .oit the fianges in the `finished pillng. The
pile sections in question are of the. so-called double interlock type andare provided with short thickened iianges orf-thumbs projecting on one side at Veach end of the web, and with long, tapering, curved ianges called guards i 'or lingers progecting at each edge on the side opposite to the thumbs and curved outwardly beyond the short @anges toter-in, :with the latter, grooves for interlocking along 'each edge of the section. To roll this sectionp'resents-a peculiar problem and to a large degree the successful rolling depends upon the proper adjustment of the scot-ion when presented to the rolls. -I li/ iy improved guiding element 1s adapted conveniently to permit of the required nnte adjustments of the parts and their relative positions and rigidly to s ecure theI parts in their adjusted positions incorrect relation to the pass. v

ln figures the usual rolls of a rolling mill are indicated by a and b and are here shown comprising that portion of the rolls which form the nishing pass, as described in my Patent No. 1,176,308 of March 21, 1916, whereby the last step in forming the piling section referred to is accomplished.

As therein explained this step consists in the..
bending over of the longer or iinger flange of the section so as to inclose the hook flange of an adjoining section. The. piling section is shown sectionallyin- Fig. 1 as 1t comes from the preceding pass and is shown entering the final pass wherein the linger liange 2 is bent over or curved as best shown in Fig. 2. The web of the section 'is indicated by the numeral 1 and 3 indicates the thumb `or hook flange which is finished and necessary tp be protected from being deliected or bent in its passage through the guides and rolls.
A desirable arrangement of the guides is here shown and is adapted to permit of the assembling and adjusting of the guides to the pile at any convenient place thereafter to be alined with the rolls as a unit. The entry or guide box so formed comprises the side-guide members 12-12 spaced to receive between them the section to guide it, wherefit is delivered at a right angle to the rolls in correct relation to the pass, for this pur-A pose being provided with guide-shoulders let-eli on their inner sides to enga e the outer surfaces of the pileeianges or ngers 2 as shown. The opposed guide surfaces of the shoulders 141-14 are shown formed to Asecurely fastened together by horizontal bolts 20--20 and the correct spacing is accomplished by inserting a suitable liner or spacer 22 between the members as shown. From the engagement of the guide shoulders 14 with the longer pile flanges it results that the thinner and more flexible hook-flanges 3 are protected from coming into contact with any part until they enter the rolls and therefore are in no danger of being bent, as '1t will be seen that the recesses 18 are en- :larged to leave a free space around the hooks. The necessity for so protecting the hooks is due to the fact that the hook anges are the widest part of the section as it comes from the 'preceding pass an are therefore liable tribe bent by contact with guides oi' pass.

The inner faces of. the `side members 12 are recessed at 24 to receive the mandrelplates 26 having fixed thereon the mandrels 28. The correct positioning tof the m'andrels relative to' the rolls is permitted by the adjustment of the mandrel supporting plates 26 verticall within the recesses 24, provision forvthis a justment being made by elongated apertures 29 in the sidev members to Which are fitted 'securing bolts 30 threaded in the mandrel plate so that when tightened the bolts se'- curelyfhol'd the mandrel in adjusted position.v Further to add to the security of the mandrel I- des'irably provide a shoulder 32 on the end of the' mandrel plate 26 to engage an opposed shoulder 33 on the side-member 12 thus positively insuring against the mandrel beingpulled through the rolls even should the securing bolts loosen or` be slieared. The engagement of the shoulders 32 and 33 in addition maintains the correct horizontal position vof the mandrels but without interfering with their vertical adjustment.

An upper passguide 35 is secured and supported by a supporting plate 36 by being -bolted thereto by means of the bolt 37. The
supporting plate 86 is secured by the seeur- -ing bolts 38. The guides are all supported by the rest bar 40 arranged to extend across the rolls and parallel thereto. These side guides as heretofore explained are adjusted and secured by' the bolts 20 thus to torni an entry guide box which is rigid and self contained thereby permitting it to be adjusted laterally on the rest bar as a-unit then to be vrigidly lheld in place by the bolts .3S- 38 passing ythrough the side members. This arrangement o l'theguides as a unit to forni an entry box 1s important as it permits of vits adjustment and removal as a. and the bottom portion having a recess on its upper surface beneath the shoulder to receive a flange on the bar.

In an entry guide to be used with rolls for rolling metal sheet pile sections having on each edge a finger and a thumb, an integral guide member having a bottom element and a side element'arranged at a right angle to each other, an inwardly extending shoulder on the side element having an inclined surface to engage with the finger and a flared front end, said side element having a recess on its inner surface rearwardly of the shoulder and extending above the saine to afford a seat for a plate supporting a mandrel guide, and the lower element having a downwardly inclined upper surface with a downwardly curved front end to engage with the section web and a recess on its upper surface below the shoulder freely to receive the thumb.

An entry guide of the character described comprising side guide members and mandrel guides adjustably supported on the side members said side members and mandrels being formed with abutting shoulders to maintain the horizontal position of the mandrels and means for securing the mandrels to the side guide members substaib tially-f as described.

An entry guide arrangement of the character described comprising separable side guide members, mandrels carried thereby, means to couple the side guide members as a unit, a top guide supportingl plate, a top guide supported thereon, a supporting bar for the guiding unit and clamping means operative to clamp the guiding unit onto the supporting bar and to secure the top guide supporting plate substantially as described.
11. An entry guide adapted for use with rolls for rolling metal bars having hook flanges on their marginal edges comprising separable side guide members arranged to be relatively adjustable and having inwardly extending guide shoulders adapted to engage outwardly .directed surfaces of the bar at a point Within the marginal edges thereof, mandrel guides adjustably supported on the side members, said side members and mandrels being formed with abutting shoulders to maintain the horizontal position of the mandrels and means rigidly to couple the guide members as a guiding unit, substantially as described.
