UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
IMPROVEMENT IN PRESSES Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,644, dated February 13, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM HANDLE, of Hadensville Station, in the "county of Todd and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and. useful Improvement in Presses; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompa- 11 in drawin formin art of this s ecification.
My invention relates to an improvement in presses; and it consists in a novel arrangement of perforated bars, ratchet-bars, pawls, and levers with a beam carrying the follower to actuate the latter by lever-power, all as hereinafter described.
- The drawing is partly a side elevation and partly a sectional elevation of my improved apparatus.
A is the beam to which the follower is to be connected for being forced down into the press case. This beam is fitted to work up and down on the metal bars 0, which are notched, as at D, for holding a retaining-pawl, E, pivoted onto said beam so as to fall into the notches as the beam goes down. F represents the levers pivoted to the bars Cone to each-be- Each lever supports a vertical iron bar, H, in front of the bar 0, to which it is pivoted, and rising up through the slot of said beam, through which the bar 0 passes. These bars are pivoted to the lever H, and have ratchet teeth I, in which a holding-pawl, K, on beam A will drop as the said bars are raised by the respective levers. The said levers extend inward beyond the bars 0, and carry a vertical bar, L, also rising up through the beam, and providedavith holes at suitable distances apart to lift the beam up for raising the follower by placing the pins first in the lowermost holes under the beam and lifting asmuch as it can by one sweep of the levers, then placing them in holes higher up, and so on. The levers F will be worked one at a time in raising the beam, the one retaining it while the other takes a new hold. The beam is forced down for pressing the bale by the levers F, bars H, and pawls K, the long arms of the levers being forceddown and drawing the beam down by means of the said bars H and pawls K. After each downward movement of the beam, it is prevented from rising again,
- when the levers are lifted for taking a new hold,
by the pawls E and the bars 0.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination, with the beam A, notched bars G and H, and levers E, of the perforated bars L, pivoted rack bar H, and pawls E and K, substantially as described.
WM. HANDLE.
