DUMP-CAR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. '7, 1917.
Application filed April 2, 1917. Serial No. 159,172.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KARL H. HANSEN, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dump-Oars; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to dump-cars.
In quarry operations where the rock which is to be crushed is dumped directly from cars into the crushing rolls or crusher, it has been generally the custom to employ a dump-car in which the body of the car is lowered instantly to its dumping position, thus allowing the whole load to be discharged into the crusher at one time. This trouble has been obviated to some extent in later types of cars by providing means for lowering the car body gradually or at faster or slower speed in order to feed the rock to the crusher at such rate that the crusher can properly take care of same.
In this last type of car, however, it has been diflicult to obtain a body which is stiff enough to stand being tilted up on one edge and held in this position during the gradual discharge of the contents as the car body is subjected to severe twisting strains. The object of my invention is to overcome this difficulty and we have accomplished this by the construction hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved car; Fig. 2 is an end view; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail showing the manner of supporting the car body.
In the drawing the numeral 2 designates a suitable underframe made up of longitudinally extending I-beams 3 and other parts to form a strong, rigid construction, said underframe being mounted to travel on the Wheels 4.
Secured at intervals to the web portions of the I-beams 8 are the brackets 5 having the curved seats 6.
The car-body 7 is of the ordinary clumpcar type and said body has the hangers 8 secured to the bottom thereof at suitable intervals which support the longitudinally extending shafts 9 at each side of the car. These shafts 9 extend the entire length of the car and serve the purpose of side-sills for the car-body. These shafts stiifen and strengthen the car-body and act to prevent it from getting out of shape when raised to the dumping position when it is subjected to the severe stresses and strains which are set up during the dumping operation.
These shafts 9 are preferably round or circular in cross-section and rest in the recesses or pockets 6 of the brackets 5.
The hangers 8 are preferably arranged in pairs at each side of the brackets 5.
When my improved car is in use, the carbody is connected by the links 10 to the cable or chain 11 which passes around an overhead winding shaft 12, and by the winding of said shaft the car-body is dumped gradually to disengage the contents and slower or faster according to the capacity of the crusher. In moving the car-body to dumping position in this manner, it will be apparent that the shaft 9 on one side will be supported by the hangers 5 and the pockets 6 will act as hearings in which the shaft turns as the dumping operation proceeds.
In this manner I provide for the bracing or strengthening of the car-body during the dumping operation and by having the longitudinal shaft resting in and moving in the pockets of the brackets, the strain on the body is relieved and the car is dumped with greater ease and facility.
What I claim is:
1. In a clump-car, the combination of an underframe, brackets extending out from the side thereof at intervals, a dumping carbody and a longitudinally-extending shaft on said car-body adapted to engage said brackets.
2. In a dump-car, the combination of an underfralne, brackets secured at intervals thereon having curved pockets, a dumping oar-body, and a longitudinally extending round shaft on said car-body adapted to en'- gage said pockets.
3. In a dump-car, the combination of an underfraine, brackets carried thereby having round pockets a dumpingcar-body, hangers on said car-body, and a shaft supported by said hangers engaging the pockets in said brackets. 1 In testimony whereof I, the said KARL H. HANSEN, have hereunto set my hand.
KARL H. HANSEN.
