. tary Drinking-Fountains, of which the foiter.
lowing is a specification.
My inventionrelates to bubblers or sanitary drinking fountains and has for its primary objects the shielding of the drinkers lips from the discharge orifice; the maintenance of a uniform height of the discharge stream; the prevention of radial discharge to a. distance from the nozzle when it is attempted to deflect the stream from the discharge orifice; and to positively direct the water along the finger and up to the wrist and clothing of any person who places his finger upon the stream at its point of emis-.
sion, and in such a manner as to discourage such mischievous interference. Further objects are to secure the above ends in a simple and inexpensive structure easily operable.
To the enumerated ends essentially my invention consists in such parts and combinations of parts as fall Within the scope of the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification Figures 1 and 2 are side and plan elevations of my novel structure,
Fig. 3, a section on line 33 of Fig. 2, and
Fig.4, a section on line -i of Fig. 1..
Like reference characters indicatelike parts throughout the views.
My invention'in the form thereof herein shown comprises an attaching sleeve .6 provided with internal threads 7 adapted to engage the threads of the supply pipe. The upper portion of this sleeve constitutes an attaching post 8 provided with a threaded central opening '9 communicating with the interior of the portion 6. but of less diame- A nozzle 11 has an external threaded connection 12 in the threaded orifice 9 of the post, and projects slightly above the post. The nozzle has an inclined bore 14: extending longitudinally thereof, eccentric to the nozzle at its bottom. but concentric thereto at its top. The water passing through the sleeve 6' and the inclined bore 14. is therefore discharged at an inclination.
Specification of Letters latent.
Patented Aug. '7, 193132;
Serial No. 133,532.
The upper end of the post 8 is provided with an external thread 16 adapted to on gage an internal thread 17 upon the lower end of a cap or housing 18, comprising a side wall 19, and a top wall 20, the latter being provided -with a central orifice 21 of greater diameter than the diameter of the bore 1 1 of the nozzle, and directly above the latter. The wall 19 is provided with a plurality, in the present instance 3, openings 23 arranged equidistant from each other. Since the cap is somewhat cup shaped, the interior thereof near its top is inwardly and upwardly in clined as is 25 and the adjacent opening 21 is provided with a bevel 26. This beveled formation is of importance in assisting the guidance of the stream when the latter 1s being intercepted by the finger of a person at tempting to cover the opening :21, because ithas a tendency to direct the flow of the water up and over the top of the finger toward whatever direction the finger approaches to cover the opening, and thus insures the wetting of the upper portion of the hand, wrist or clothing. Near the upper portion of the sleeve 6 are a plurality. in the present instance 3, radially disposed. upwardly directed, outwardly inclined arms 28 connected at their outer ends with a ring 29. The ring forms a guard.
In operation, unless some obstacle is 'r'es cut, the stream issues from the supply pipe through the sleeve 6 and nozzle 11, and through theopening 21 in the cap in an inclined direct-ion without interference. with the cap itself, and at a reasonable anduniform height. The inclined character of the stream. and the inclination and bevel of the as j interior surface of the cap combine to efii-- ciently effect the ends alreadv suggested.-
It will be observed that the openings 23 are located in each instance directly opposite the arms 28 so that the waste water issuing from said openings when the stream is intercepted is directed toward these radial arms which.;a ct as shields against the exces sive dispersibn ofthe water from the fountain. i
It will be furtherobserved. that one of the purposes of this invention is served by the threaded character of the connection of the nozzle with the post, and the threaded character of the connection of the housing with the post, whereby these members may not only be readily assembled and reassembled with the remaining parts, but are capable of adjustment relatively to each other and relatively to the post and guard ring.
In a drinking fountain, the combination of a hollow post, of a nozzle seated in the post, a cap inclosing .the nozzle detachably embracing the post with its lower margin,
inclined guard arms upon the post extended 10 above the oap 'a guard ring upon the ends of the arms, said cap being provided with an opening in its top and with lateral openings in radial alinement with the arms.
In testimony whereof I have afiixedmy signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT s. NEWTON.
