IMPROVEMENT IN SYRINGES.`

Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,587, dated February 13, 1872.

To all whom it may concern: v

Beit known that I, WILLTAM B. SNYDER, of Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Urethral Syringes, of which the following is a specification:

The objects of my invention are to adapt the syringe to the male organ to prevent injections from entering the bladder while acting freely on the uretha; to hold the instrument securely in position; and to render its parts easily detachable.

My improvements are specifically designated in the claims hereinafter set forth.

The accompanying drawing represents the best form of instrument now known to me. Some parts of my improved syringe obvious' ly may be used without the others, or adapted to other constructions of syringes, and their details may be varied to some extent without departing from the spirit of my invention.

The body A of my syringe is provided with a male or female screw," a., to adapt it to any of the syringes now in ordinary use. An injection-pipe, A', is connected at or near one end with this body, its other end being provided with a bulb, al, to close the urethra between the bladder and diseased part when inserted. Perforations c2,'near the base of the instance a shoulder, b', is formed on the arm B, near its end, and an annular groove, c,is also formed in it still nearer the end. A sleeve, c', on the clamp-bar C, ts on the arm B between this shoulder and groove.

plate, D, is also provided with a sleeve, d, which iits over the other sleeve,`c, turning freely thereon, as the latter does on the arm. Av spring', E, on this plate enters slots in sleeves c and d, and takes into the groove c on the arm, thus clamping the parts securely together, and yet leaving them free to move and easy to detach. The clamp-'arm C forms an elbowlever, its bent arm passing through a slit in the plate D, and bearing against one edge ot' said slit, so as to produce suicient friction to hold'it in position.

Many modifications of the details of this clamping apparatus would obviously suggest themselves to any skillful maker of instruments of` this class. For instance, the parts C D might both be made in the form of bars or rods, or spring-arms, or have'a spring connection, instead of a hingejoint. The arm I) might be hinged at its elbow, and provided with aspring, or it might be provided with a ratchet or other device to lock it to the other member of the clamp. The arm B might also be attached to the body A by means of a collar iittin g thereon, For various reasons, however, I prefer the form shown.

The operation of my improved instrument will readily be understood from the foregoing description. The tube A is inserted in the uretha, the penis is passed through the clamp t0 the desired extent, and then compressed by bringing the parts C l) together. The injection is then given in the usual way.

I claim as my invention- 1. The combination, with a urethral syringe, of a clamp, substantially as hereinbefore set forth.

2. The combination of the body, arm, and clamp, substantially as hereinbefore set forth.

3. The combination of the clamp-plate and clamp-arm, substantially as hereinbefore set forth. 4. The combination of the grooved arm, slotted clamp, and holding-spring, substantially Y as hereinbefore set forth.
