Be it known that I, IRA W. FoL'rz, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Furnaces, of which the following is a specication.
The main objects of this: invention are to provide an improved furnace wherein substantially complete combustion of the fuel and gases is effected; to provide an improved construction and arrangement of the fire box whereby heated fresh air is supplied vto the fuel body throughout the entire height thereof; to provide improved means within the furnace for retarding the flow of gases from the fuel body to the combustion chamber, and for mixing therewith super-heated fresh air in regulated quantities; and to provide other improved means for controlling the admission of fres air to said first mentioned means.
An illustrative embodiment of this invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a cylindrical furnace constructed according to this invention. j

Fig. 4 is a large fragmentary sectional detail illustrating the method of forming a water-tight joint where conduits pass through the water jacket of the furnace.
Furnaces of the general type shown in the drawings, but without the present improvements, usually permit a more or less direct draft from the ash-pit through the fuel body to the combustion chamber and out through the chimney, and fail to provide for a sufficient supply of air which will at all times insure proper combustion. Thus, much of the gases liberated from the burning and coking fuel are carried oft1 from the combustion chamber without undergoing complete combustion. The present invention effects substantially complete combustion of the fuel and gases by retarding the flow of gases from the fire-box and at the same time adding to the fuel and gases throughout the length of the lire-box and part of the combustion chamber, regulated quantities of heated fresh air.
In the construction shown in the drawings the invention is illustrated as being applied to a cylindrical type of furnace for hot water heating. The furnace comprises a shell' 1 providing a fire-box 2, a casing 3 60v providing a combustion chamber 4, and a base 5 forming the ash-pit 6. The grate bars 7 are supported at the juncture of the shell 1 and base 5 and separate the fire-box and ash-pit. In this particular c-onstruction a water heating coil 8 is located within the combustion chamber 4.
IVith a view to improving the combustion n of the fuel, a lining 24 is set within the shell 1 above the grate bars 7, being provided 70 with lugs 25 which rest upon a ledge 26 of the base 5, and forming an annular space 27 extending entirely around the lire-box and communicating directly with the ash-pit.
The perforations or apertures 28 are spaced 75 about over the entire lining and by virtue of the space 27 provide communication between the ash-pit and the re-box and between different parts of the fire-box.
To retard the flow of gases from the fuel 80 The tubular supports 10 communicate at g5 their upper ends with the interior 12 of the baffle member 9 and at their lower ends communicate with the space 27. Apertures 14 are formed in the perimeter of the baffle member 9 through which heated fresh air 90 is discharged from the interior 12.
A casing 17 embraces the shell 1 and provides an air chamber 18 from which conduits or pipes 19 lead to the bale member 9.
The casing 17 has anv opening 20 providing 95 communication with the outer air, which is controlled by a shutter 21. Where the pipes 19 lead through the shell 1, a water-tight joint is formed by means of conical washers 22 and nuts 23 screwed onto the pipe 19, 100
as will be obvious from Fig. 4.
The operation of a furnace equipped with this invention will vary, depending upon the condition of the re and the adjustments of the drafts. Undernormal conditions the operation would be as follows: The air passing from the ash-pit 6 up through the grate bars 7 is readily consumed as it passes through the incandescent fuel and promotes the combustion thereof. It is therefore of 11o `supply heated fresh air above the top of the fuel body to be mixed with the gases lib @rated from said fuelbody. In the present construction the first of these advantagesis accomplished by the passage of the air from the ash-pit 6 into the space 27 and through the apertures 28 in the lining 24C. The second of these advantages is accomplished by the emission of air from the apertures 14.
As the gases liberated from the burning coa-l in the lire-box 2 rise, they are baffled downwardly by means of the baffle member 9 and are caused to flow out yaround the perimeter thereof7 whereupon heated fresh air emitting from the apertures 14 is mixed therewith `and completes the combustion.
AThe air supplied through the tubular supports 10 enters the space 27 from the ash-pit 6, Where it is partially heated and rises through the tubular supports 10 into the interior 12 of the baffle member 9. Air from the outside enters the chamber 18 and as it is heated rises and passes through the pipes 19 into the baflie member 9. At other times when the draft is sluggish or contrary the gases from the fuel body will pass through some of the apertures 28 into the space 27 and mix with the air therein and then pass back into another part of the fire box or fuel body and be readily consumed.

Although but one specific embodiment of this invention is vherein shown and described, it will be understood that numerous details of the construction shown may be altered or omitted without departing from the spirit ofthis invention as defined by the following claim.
l claim:
In a furnace having a fire-box and an ash-pit separated by a grate, the combination of a perforated lining located in said fire-box and providing an annular space between said lining and the wall of the fireboX communicating directly with the ashpit, a bafile member located above said grate and having apertures formed therein around the perimeter thereof, and tubular supports for said baffle member resting on said lining and communicating at theirlower ends with said annular space, `and at their upper ends with the interior of said baffle member.
