' IMPROVEMENT IN SELF-LQADlNG AND DUMPlNG CARTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,565, dated February 13, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. HERBERT,
of New Albany, in the county of Floyd and in the State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Self-Loading and Dumping Cart; and do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being'had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification. The nature of my invention consists inthe construction and arrangement of a self'loading and dumping cart, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure l is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 a front view of my cart.
A A represent the shafts attached to the axle B, upon the ends of which the wheels 0 O are mounted. At the upper rear edge of the axle B is hinged the box D, which is held down in place upon the shafts by means of a bolt, to. This bolt slides in guides upon the upper side of one of the shafts, and is moved into a staple, b, on the front of the box D, said staple entering a recess inthe shaft. The tail-board E is hinged at its upper edge to the is held closed by a bolt, cl, as shown in Fig. 1. This bolt is so beveled at its lower end that in closing the tail-board the bolt will latch itself. On the shafts A A, in front of the box D, are secured upright bars G G, which are slotted vertically at their ends, as shown in Fig. 1. Between the bars G G, at each end, is placed a roller, H, and around said rollers is an endless band or apron, I, provided with scoops J J. The bars G G extend below the shafts at such distance that the scoops will scrape up the dirt, and when carried up and passing over the upper roller the dirt will fall into the box D. The journals of the rollers H H pass through the slots in the bars G G, and have their hearings in metal bars f on the outside of said upright bars. The metal bars ff are jointed and attached at the joint to a crank, '5, upon each end of a shaft, e, which passes through the shafts A A. To one of the cranks i is attached a lever, K, and the whole is so arranged that when the said lever is pressed down between the two pins 5' s on the side of the shaft, as shown in Fig. 1, the cranks M will point vertically downward from their shaft, the bars ff straight, and the journals of the rollers H H at the bottom of the slots in the upright bars G G, the band or apron I being stretched around said rollers. Now, by raising the lever K the joints in the bars f f are first broken so as to raise the lower roller slightly, and then both rollers are raised so that the apron will be slack and not turn, and the scoops not touch the ground. The rollers are revolved with the apron by means of belts and pulleys from the driving-wheels O O, or by co g-gearing, or by any other suitable means.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the slotted standards G G, rollers H H, belt or apron I, with scoops J J, the jointed rods ff supporting the journals of the rollers, the cranks t i, and lever K, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The combination of the shafts A A,- axle B, box D, tail-board E, standards G G, rollers H H, belt or apron I, and scoops J J, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
