Beit known that I, HENRY W., NELSON, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the borough of Manhattan, City, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Concrete-Mixers, of whichl the following is a specication.
My invention relates to concrete mixers Vand has as its object a means of the character set forth which is simple in construction, easy of operation and of a higher efficiency than those heretofore used. One of the essentialy features. of my invention comprises a plurality of hopper shaped compartments, substantially oppositely arranged in pairs, with means for discharging the mixl from either one of the hopper shaped compartments of one pair into the other of the saine pair, in combination. with. means for charging and emptying said compartments.
In the following I have described, in connection with the accompanying drawings,`
one embodiment` of my invention, the features thereof being more particularly `point;- ed out hereinafter in the claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is an end view of 'a structure illustrating my invention, partly inV sectiony and' partly broken away. F ig. 2 isa topplan view, parts beingbroken away.

The apparatus is t'hen rotated until the mix has been discharged from one compartment to the opposite one any` desired number of times. VI have found four discharges to give a good result. Starting with an empty apparatus this requires a rotation of two and a half times until the rst batch is discharged from the apparatus and the third batch is introduced into compartment 3. At two and three quarter revolutions, the second batch is discharged and the fourth batch is introduced into compartment 2. Thereafter two batches are charged into the apparatus and two are discharged at the end of two complete revolutions each, so that I obtain one complete four time mix at an average of each revolution of the apparatus. The discharge takes place when the batch to be discharged is in position as in compartment', F ig. l, when the lower wall of the compartment acts as a guide through the door 13 to the place of discharge.
It is thus seen that I have provided a means forrapid and efficient mixing requiring but a minimum time of operation, the concrete mixers at present in use and known to me discharging but one batch in from twelve to sixteen revolutions. I have also provided an apparatus subject to a minimum of wear and tear for any fixed amount of mixing, as well as operating under a low power cost of operation.
It is obvious that the details of construction may be varied, the number of compartments increased or diminished from` those shown in the drawings and the shape of the compartments changed without departing from the spirit of my invention and I do not restrict myself to the details as shown and described further than the scope of the appended claims demand.
I/Vhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. In a concrete mixer, a series of' pairs of hopper-shaped compartments closed at their larger ends save for inlet doors, the smaller ends of each pair arranged in straight line opposition so as to discharge directly into one another as the mixer is turned over- 2. In a concrete mixer, a series of pairs of hopper-shaped compartments, means to close their larger ends, and doors in such closing means, and having the smaller ends of each pair arranged in line and close together so as to discharge from one to the other as the mixer is turned over. f
3. In a concrete mixer, a series-of funnel- Vshaped compartments arranged in circular series, means to close their wider ends, and
means in said closed ends by which access is had into the compartments individually, the apexial ends of opposite compartments being arranged in line with one another so as to discharge from one into the other compartment as the mixer is turned over.
4. In a concrete mixer a rotatable drum having therein a plurality of hopper shaped compartments substantially oppositely arranged with respect to each other and having discharge openings in communication with each other so as to permit the discharge from one of said compartments to the oppositely disposed one and vice versa and doors in the shell of said drum communicating with each of said compartments, said doors being so arranged with relation to the walls of the respective compartments that the lower walls form a chute to the doors for the discharge from the apparatus.
5. In a concrete mixer a rotatable drum having therein a plurality of hopper shaped compartments substantially oppositely arranged with respect to each other and having discharge openings in communication with each other so as to permit the discharge from one of said compartments to the oppositely disposed one and vice versa, and means for guidingthe discharge from one of said compartments, to the oppositely disposed one.
6. In a concrete mixer a rotatable drum having therein a plurality of hopper shaped compartments substantially oppositely arranged with respect to each other and having discharge openings in communication with each other so as to permit the discharge from one of each of said compartments to the oppositely disposed one and vice versa and means adjacent the discharge end of said compartments for partially closing the space between said respective ends.
7. In a concrete mixer, a rotatable drum including a plurality of hopper-shaped compartmentswith converging discharge openings and a closed peripheral wall provided with a feed opening.V
8. In a concrete mixer, a. rotatable drum including a plurality of hopper-shaped compartments with converging discharge openings, means for guiding the discharging material' from one compartment into the discharging end of another, and a closed peripheral wall provided with a feed opening for each compartment.
