To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, MARIANO P'. SGAR- DINo and PETER SoAnDrNo, citizens of the United States, residing at Bryan, in the county of Brazos, State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Half-Car Unloaders; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. V
This invention relates to the handling of material in bulk and has special reference to a device arranged to enable railroad cars such as are used for hauling coal, ore, and other like material to be unloaded by a single operation. The form of device here presented is divided out of our application, Serial No. 806,918 filed December 15, 1913, which application has matured into a Patent No. 1,128,258 which was issued Feb. 9, 1915.
The principal object of the invention is to improve and simplify the general construction of devices of this character.
A second object of the invention is to provid@ an improved apparatus for hoisting a car, moving the car off the track in a lateral direction when hoisted, and then dumping the car and replacing it upon the track.
A third object of the invention is to provide an improved means for controlling the hoisting and dumping operations of a device of the character described.
A fourth object of the invention is to provide an improved derrick or crane for accomplishing the objects hereinbefore set forth.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a portable crane arranged to accomplish the hoisting and overturning of a car in order to dump the same.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically claimed.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, 10 represents a frame which consists of the upright members or posts 11 which are connected at their tops in pairs by the transverse members 12 suitably braced together by braces 13. Rails 14 are located on the members 12 and on these rails is mounted a traveling crane comprising a girder 15 having` at each end a carriage 16 provided with wheels 17 which run on the respective rails 14.
This frame 10 is placed so that a track 18 runs therethrough on which the car 19 to beoperated upon is placed. In order that thisy car 19 may be raised, we have provided on the girder 15 a plurality of pulleys 20 from which extend extending downwardly and around pulleys 22 and 23, and over a drum 26, the latter being revolubly mounted on a shaft 25 which is supported on a frame 24 iand clutched thereto by means of a clutch 27. In order that theJ motion of this drum may be arrested after the clutch has been thrown out, we have provided a band brake 28 which is operated by means of a rod 29 and a lever 30. In yorder that the retrograde movement of this drum may be prevented, we have provided a ratchet wheel l31 on the end thereof, and a pawl 32 cooperating therewith, which pawl is operated by means of a rod 33, the latter being connected to a lever 34. The otherA ends of these cables 21 are connected to yokes 35 on the ends of the car by means of hooks 36.
1n order that the car may be tilted after having been raised, we provide a cable 37 which winds on a pulley 38 on the girder 15 and thence around a drum 39 which is revoluble on a shaft 40 and is clutched thereto by means of a clutch 41. A brake 42 is provided by means of which the movement of the drum is controlled. This drum cables 21, the said cables o has a ratchet d3 on the end thereof, which cooperates with a pavvl di; connected to a lever 45 to prevent the retrograde movement of the drum.
ln order that the girder l5 may be drawn baclnvardly over the track, We have provided on one or' the braces 13 at each kend thereof a pulley l-G vover which pulleys pass cables d?, the latter being Wound upon a drum #i8 which is likewise clutched to a shaft i9 by a clutch 5G and the motion of which is controlled by a band brake 5l con nected to a lever 52. The clutches 27, al and 5l are controlled by levers 58 operable on quadrants l and connected to the said clutches by means of rods 55 and bell crank levers 56. ln order that motion may be iinparted to the drum 39, We have provided on the end of the shaft gear 57 which meshes with a Worin gear 58, the latter being driven. by means of a motor 59 motion is transmitted from this shaft Ll() to the shaft 49 by means of a chain 60 and from the shaft e9 to the shaft 25 by means of chain 6l, the chains being located on the opposite ends or" the respective shafts.
From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that ive have provided a simple and eflicient device for hoisting and duinping cars, and We have so constructed the device that the car will be hoisted, carried to a dumping position and then dumped and ivill then be returned to its position on the track.
