IMPROVEMENT IN STOP-SOCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,534, dated February 6, 1872.
To all whomz't may concern:
Be it known that I, ASA W. WILKINSON, of the city, county, and State ot' New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stop-Cocks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description th erect', which will enable those skilled in the art to malte and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part ot' this specification, in which drawin g- Figure l represents a longitudinal section of this invention. Fig. 2 is a side view ofthe same.

This invention relates to a stop-cock, the plug of which is perforated with two holes and provided with an adjusting-screw, extending through the end of the plug, and serving to regulate the exposed area'ot one of the holes in the plug in such a manner that by turning said plug the communication between two distinct sets of pipes ca-n be opened or closed simultaneously, and at the same time the quantity ot' liquid or iiuid passing through one set of pipes can be regulated by means ot' the adjustin g-screw entirely independent ofthe quantity or liquid or fluid passing through the other set of pipes.
In the drawing, the letter A designates the shell ot' my stop-cock, which is bored out in a longitudinal direction to receive the plug B. On the opposite sides ofthe shell are provided nipples a. c b b', which are furnished with internal or external screw-threads to receive pipes H H O O', and these pipes communicate with the bore of the shell A through channels c c d d extending through the nipples. The plug B is pertorated with holes e f, which, when the plug is in position and turned, can be brought in line with the channels c c and d d', respectively, so that the communication between both these channels is opened and closed at the same time. The holes e f, and also the channels c c d d', may be made of any suitable size, and they may be of the same or different sizes, according to the nature ofthe liquids or tluids to be passed through them. rIhrough the large end ofthe plug B is bored a hole, g, which extends transversely through the lower hole f, and which is tapped to receive a screw, h, and this screw is provided with an extension, the diameter of which is equal to or larger than that ot' the holef, so that when said screw is screwed up the hole f can be partially or wholly stopped. The pipes H and O are intended to connect with reservoirs containing different gases or liquids, and the\ pipes H and O are intended to conduct these gases or liquids to the spot where they are to g be mixed, and by turning the plug B in the proper position both sets ot pipes areopened simultaneously and the gases 0r liquids pass through them. If it is desired to diminish the quantity ot' gas or liquid passing through the. pipes O O', the adjusting-screw h is screwed up so as to stop up partially the holej'; and if it is desired to let on only one kind of gas or liquid, the hole f in the plug can be stopped up entirely.
My stopcock is of particular value for oxyhydrogen-gas-burners, and by means ot' the adjusting-screw the quantity ot' oX` y gen admitted to the burner can be adjusted with the greatest nicety, so as to obtain the best possible el'ect, according to the quality of the combustible gas. If desired, the adjustingscrew can be in the form ot' a plain tapering plug held inposition by suitable means.
