To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FREDERICK W. MAonn, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of thecity of London, in the county of Middlesex, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gas-Regulators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in gas regulators.
An object of the invention is to provide a structure having a regulating member whereby the main passage for gas is governed so as to be open only the pre-determined extent to which the regulator has been set.
Another object ofthe invention is to provide a valve in which the normal flow of gas is regulated and which is also provided with a pilot or simmer branch passage.
A still further object is the provision in connection with the supply passage of a valve of an auxiliary exit under control and whereby the normal outflow ofgas for consumption may be augmentedto a regulated extent.
Another object is to provide a regulator with a permanently open small or pilot port and a regulated main burner port and an augmenting regulated passage for said main burner port.
With these objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel combination and arrangement oi parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like designating numerals refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views: Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical sectional view thereof.
Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the device. Fig. e is a perspective view of the valve plug removed. Fig. 5 is a side. elevation of the valve plug. Fig. 6 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of amodified form of the invention. Figs. 7 and 8 are views in elevation of the two ends of said modification, and, Fig. 9 is a horizontal longitudinal sectional view thereof.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the main body 3 of the regulator is provided with the main passage a through the threaded inlet boss while within a tapered vertical bore 20 is fitted the tapered valve plug 52. In the outlet end g of the body member is the main gas outlet 6 communicating with. the inner passage 4 of slightly less diameter than and alining with the gas inlet a and also in a horizontal plane with a main gas port 14: through said valve plug. Through the outlet end g of the body there is also provided a smaller port 12 adapted for use-as a simmer supply or pilot light and communicating with an auxiliary outlet-passage 1]. adapted tobe brought in communication with an angular passage 13 of less diameter than and communicating on one side of the plug to the main plug port let. Said plug 2 is provided with a handle -e positioned in alinement with the longitudinal axis of the pilot port 13. Positioned through the valve plug 2 there is provided a screw 1 positioned in alinement with the longitudinal axis of the main port 14. Said screw is provided with a tapered point a which is adapted to be brought into contact with the abutment cZ" of the body, the protruding length of said screw point being controlled by positioning said screw by means of its head Z)-. The position of the point controls the limit of rotation of the valve plug as may be desired, thus regulating the extent to which the gas port 14 is opened.
The outer end of the body has an auxiliary outlet opening therein which communicates through the ports 7 and 8 to the main outlet passage 4.. A regulating screw 10 is provided for controlling the gas passing through the port 8. The gas mixing chamber 9 is provided adjacent the regulator outlet g as shown in Fig. 1 while the usual construction of washer shown at 7zand the screw positioned in the end of the valve plug for retaining the same upon the valve seat are employed.
The operation of the device is as follows: The gas entering through the main inlet 4 passes through the main port 14 of the plug in regulated quantities when the handle e is turned so that the point ,a: contacts the abutment cl-, the passage of the gas being normally through the exit pas-, sage 4 and port 6 while if desired, a regu lated opening of the screw 10 allows an added amount of gas to escape through passages 7 and 8. The outlet port 6 is of relatively small diameter which provides for a constant pressure in the passage 4 there fore, to relieve this pressure and supply additional gas the regulator screw 10 is partially withdrawn and allows the gas to escape through the ports 7 and 8. By turning the handle eto position the point w out of contact with the abutment cZ-, and as here shown, with the said handle in longitudinal alinement with the regulator body, the auxiliary port 13 then registers with the pilot passage 11 and outlet 12 so as to maintain a passage for the escape of a small amount of gas from the main inlet 4. The end of said passage 13 at the side of the plug is slightly reamed out as at 13 to allow a freer passage of the gas between the pas sages 13 and 11.
In the modified form as shown in Fig. 6, the substantially cylindrical body 21 is provided with an open passage 22 extending longitudinally thereof. and communicating with the gas inlet end 23 and the outlet port 2-l. A central passage 25 has an auxiliary gas outlet 26 and is brought into communi cation with the inlet 23 through the auX- iliary passage 27 regulated by the screw 28.
The diameter of said passage 25 being greater than the outlet port 26, an augmenting outlet passage 29 is provided therefrom regulated by the screw 30. The gas therefore passes through the body 21 under control through the passage 22 and port 24, but
under control of the screws 28 and 30 through the ports 26 and 29.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, I do not wish to confine my invention to such construction as various forms and modifications may be had which will fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is A gas burner comprising a body-portion having a main central bore throughout its length, the inlet end of the bore being of greater diameter than the outlet end thereof, a relatively small bore above and below the main bore and in vertical alinement, said body being further provided with a tapering transverse bore arranged centrally thereof, a tapering valve plug for said bore, said plug provided with a transverse opening adapted to register with the main bore, and an angular port in said plug adapted to register with the uppermost bore, a port establishing communication between the main bore and the lower bore, and a valve for controlling the gas passing through the latter port.
