To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES J. PAULsoN, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing in the borough of Brooklyn, in the county of 'Kings and State of New York, have invented `certain new and useful Improvements in Faucets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to mixing faucets for the purpose of permitting two diiferent fluids under pressure to be delivered from the faucet in various mixtures, or either fluid to be delivered alone.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a form of valve that is supplied with hot and cold water, or other dissimilar liquids, and having a. single outlet member; and an adjustable valve member that can be rotated to a variety of positions, whereby either the hot. or the cold water alone will flow out of the outlet member, or the two streams of hot and cold can be brought together and thereby7 mixed at the outlet mem- A further object of the invention is to provide an improved structure wherein by the turning of a single plug member either the hot or the cold supply will flow from the faucet, or a stream can be obtained with varying mixtures from the two supplies, whereby the temperature of the stream obtained' can be graduated as desired.
In the accompanying drawing representing embodiments of my invention, Figure 1 is a plan view; Fig. 2 is a front elevation;

The invention is shown as comprisin a frame member 12 whose bore 10 is preferably slightly conical, in which-turns a plug valve 13. The plug has a stem 14, to which is connected a handle 15 for turning the plug. A cap 16 is shown on the top of the frame to close the bore; the lower end 17 of the valve frame 12 being closed except for a central aperture 18, through which projects a threaded stem 19 carrying a nut 20 for adjusting the valve in the frame- The frame is shown as provided with an outlet member 21 having an outlet passage 22.l At its upper portion this passage is curved and provided with an inlet portion 2 3 that at certain positions is closed bythe valve 13. The outlet 22 also has a transverse passage 24 connecting therewith, that forms an inlet that at certain positions is closed by the valve 13. At the opposite side of the frame 12 from the outlet member 21 are two inlet members 25 and 26, one or both of which are closed by the plug 13 at certain positions. rlhese passages connect with inlet tubes 27 and 28 respectivelyfor admitting different liquids to the faucet, such as liotaiid cold Water. The inlet portions of the passages 25 and 26 are arranged on the same transverse lane as the branch outlet passage 24 connecting with the outlet- 22, while the outlet passage 23 is above all of the three passages 24, 25 and 26.
The plug member 13 is provided with two radial passages 30 and 31, connecting at the axis of the plug and which passages are in the same transverse plane as the passages 25 v and 26, and can be brought to register therewith when tlie plug is in the position indicated in Fig. 5. When the plug 13 is turned by the handle to t-he position indicated in Fig. 7, the passage 30 registers with the inlet passage 25, while the passage 31 registers with the outlet passage 24. This will permit the cold water from the inlet 27 to pass through the plug and by passages 24 and 22 will be delivered from the faucet. When the plug is shifted to the position indicated in Fig. 9, passage 31 will register with the inlet passage 26 for the hot water, while the passage 30 of the plug will re ister With the outlet passage 24, and there ore hot water will bedelivered through the faucet. When the plug is turned to an intermediate position, as indicated in Fig. 10, the passages 30 and 31 will both be closed by the wall of the frame 12, and therefore no water will be delivered.
For the purpose of permitting a mixture of the hot and cold water to How from the outlet member'21, a supplemental passage is formed in the plug, comprising a radial passage 33 on the opposite side of the plug from i the passages 30 and 31., as indicated in Fi s.
4 and 5, which passage c onnects with t e assages 30 and 31 at their' middle portion, y a vertical passage 34. When the plug is turned to the position indicated in Fig. 5, with the passages 30 and 31 registering respectively with the hot and cold inlet passages 25 and 26, the supplemental passage .33 will register with the outlet passage 23 in the upper portion of the outlet member 21. This will permit both the hot and cold water passing in through passages-30 and 31 to flow upward through the connecting passage 311, and through passage 33, into the outlet passages 23 and 22. By this means a mixture of the hot and cold water will be delivered through the outlet passage 22. But in the three positions described with reference to Figs. 7, 9 and 10, the supplemental passage 33 is in each instance closed by the frame member`12, and does not register with the outlet passage 23. Means are further provided whereby when the mixture of hot and cold water is delivered, either thelhot or the cold water can be throttled or reduced without reducing the supply of the other.
` -As shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the inlet passages 25 and 26 are enlarged at 25 and 26".
The inlet passage 23 has its end enlarged at 23a and 23". From this it will be seen that when the plug is shifted to one side or to the other from the described osition for delivering the full supply of oth the hot and the cold water, as for instance to the position shown in Fig. 11, the supply of hot water will be throttled by reason of the passage 30 in the plug 13 being partly closed Y by the side wall of the inletpassage 26,
while the enlargement 25 will still permita full supply of cold water to How mto the plug member. This will result in the temperature of the mixture being reduced by reason of the same amount of cold water iowing and mixed with a less amount of the hot water. When the plug is shifted to the other direction from its position of full mixture, as indicated in broken lines in Fig. 11, the opposite result will follow. The amount of cold water will be throttled or reduced ywhile a full amount of hot water will be furnished by reason of the enlarged mouth at 26 of the passage 26. In both of these positions of adjustment the su plemental'outlet 33 in the 'plug will still) deliver its full supply to the supplemental passage 23 in the frame member, by reason of the enlarged portions at 23a and 23".
From the above it will be seen that by turning the faucet lto different positions, 1t will be caused to deliver either cold water alone, as shown in Fig. 7 hot water alone, as shown in F' 9; a mixture of hot and cold water, as indicated in Fig. 8; or the valve will be entirely closed when in the po- 'rating the outlet branch passages 23 and 24,

Having thus described my invention, I
. claim:
1. A faucet comprising a body member, and a plug rotatable in the bod member,
the body member having a pair o -inlet passages leading to the plug and arran ed in aplane transverse to the plug axis, t e plug member having two passages leading inwardly and arranged to re ster respectively with said inlet passages, t e lug also having anoutlet passage in a lfferent transverse plane from the inlet passages and connecting therewith in the plug, the body member also having an outlet passage arranged to register respectivel with the three passages in the plug in di erent positions of rotation of the plug.
2. A faucet comprising a body member, and a plug rotatable in the bod member, the body member having a pair o inlet passages leading to the plug and arranged 1n a plane transverse to the plug axis, the plug member having two passages leading inwardly and arranged to register respectively with said inlet passages, the plug also having an outlet passage in a different transverse plane from the inlet passages and connecting therewith in the lug, the body member also .having an outilet passage arranged to register respectively with the three passages in the plug in different positions of rotation of the plug, the adjacent portions of the inlet passages'in the frame and the said passages in the plug registering therewith being arranged whereby in one position of adjustment an unrestricted connection is provided4 from both inletsthrough the plug, and whereby adjustment beyond such position to one side or to the other will respectively restrict the flow from one inlet passage wlthout restricting the iow from the other inlet passage.
3. A faucet comprising a body member,
and a plug rotatable in the 'body member,

A faucet comprising a body member, and a plug rotatable in the body member, the body member having a pair of inlet passages leading to the plug and arranged in a plane transverse to the plug axis, the plug member having two passages leading inwardly and arranged to register respectively to permit unrestricted.
with said inlet passages, the plug also having an outlet passage in a different transverse plane from the inlet passages and connecting therewith in the plug, the body member also having an outlet passage arranged to register respectivel with the three passages in the plug in di erentpositions of rotation of the plug, the inlet passages in thebody being enlarged in the direction of rotation of the plug to permit unrestricted discharge of one inlet passage upon adjustment of the plug while the other inlet passage is thrott ed, the outlet passage in the body member being enlarged adjacent the plug to permit unrestricted flow upon slight adjustment of the plug in either direction from an intermediate position.
