Description

UNITED vSTATES PATENT onirica.
S. E. PETTEE, OF FOXBOROUGH, MASSACHUSETTS.
PRESSING HATS AND BONNETS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 12,353, dated February 6, 1855.
, nets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the drawings herewith presented, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective View, Fig. 2 is a a side elevation, Fig. 3 a front elevation, and Figa-4 a plan of the bed, the sam-e letters Ireferring to the same part-s in all.
My invention consists in constructing a bed, A, of met-al with a hole in the central part fitted with a rim to adjust to different sizes as a separate bed may be used for the different sizes with the aperture in each fitted to the crown of the size for which it is to be used, the said bed is so arranged as to be conveniently heated by steam, lamps, or other means, and bent or curved so as to correspond to a portion of the surface of a hollow cylinder, and supported by a frame as, C, to which I attach to uprights D D to support shaft, E, which is placed in center point of the sweep of the bed A. On shaft E I place two arms or segments F F having a slide frame G fitted into them holding roll, H, the segments F F having racks to gear into wheels I I made fast to shaft on which is crank K, the shaft E being made with a nut in the middle of it through which passes the screw (L) so arranged as to give any required pressure through the roll H upon bed A. The above construction will be somewhat varied in my machine in adapting it to different kinds of work, this being adapted to press the rims of the style of braid hats or bonnets known as Hats, or bloomers.
The operation of the machine is as follows, the bed being heated and the work or hat placed upon it with the damp cloths commonly used in pressing braid work in which it is desirable to lay the braid even, and not give it any gloss (the said gloss being the great difficulty in the use of smoothing irons), then by turning the crank carry the roll across one or more times, as found necessary, giving any pressure required4 by the screw L, giving the work a smooth even surface as desired, entirely avoiding the trouble of joining, experienced in pressing in the usual way. It is evident that the use of the roll may be used in otherways as the bed may be made flat and the 'roll to swing in a horizontal plane around a center or the roll made stationary and the bed made to pass it and the roll may be heated instead of the bed or the form of the ymachine so'varied as to adapt the use of the rollto all parts of the hat or bonnet.
I do not claim the pressing of hats by machinery nor the use of heated materials or damp cloths as such but That I do claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- I claim the combination of the curved heated bed plate A with the roller H for the purpose of pressing hats and bonnets whereby I am enabled to use a rolling pressure in contradistinction from a sliding pressure given by smoothingirons, or any other substantially the same.
S. E. PETTEE.
