lmprovement in Shutter Fasteners.
NO.123,519. Patented Feb. 6,1872.

IMPROVEMENT IN SHUTTER-FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,519, datedFebruaq 6, 1872. v
' erence being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the construct-ion and arrangement of a shutter-fastener, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is an inside view of a shutter with my fastener attached. Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan view of the fastener alone; and Figs. 3 and 4 are detached views of parts of the fastener.
My shutter-fastener is made in four parts: the bed-plate and guide A, the elongated rod B with hooks G C, the casing D, and spring E. The bed-plate A is made of any suitable length, and attached horizontally to the inner side of the shutter, the inner end of said bed-plate being bent outward, and provided with a hole through which the rod B passes, said outward turned portion a of the bed-plate thus acting as a guide for said rod. On the bed-plate A at a suitable point are lugs b b, the outer sides of which are concave to form bearings for the rod B, which is then held in place by the cap or casing D. This casing is provided with flanges d d, which are fastened by screws to the shutter, as shown in Fig. 1. Upon the outer end of the rod B, at right angles with. it, are formed two hooks, O U, the latter of which passes through a mortise in the shutter. On the rod B, within the cap or casing l), is a stationary collar or flange, e, and one end of the spiral spring E placed around the rod bears against said collar, while the other end of said spring bears against the inner one of the lugs b I), thus forcing the rod with its hooks outward. The rod B should be of such length as to extend nearly to the inner or hinged edge of the shutter, so that, when the shutter is open, the fastener may be released without reaching out to the outer edge of the shutter. The hook G on the outside is to fasten the shutter back when open, and the hook G to fasten it when closed 5 and, when closed, a stop of any suitable description may be put against the inner end of the rod B to prevent the opening of the shutter from the outside.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The withindescribed shutter-fastener, consistingot' the bed-plate A, with guide aandlugs b I) cast in one piece, the elongated rod B, with hook (J G and collar 0, also cast in one piece, and the cap or casing D with flanges d (I, and the spring E, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
THOS. S. SEABURY.
