WASHING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Pate flie d J uly 31, 1917.
Application filed June 23, 1916. Serial No. 105,484.
To cZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HAMPTON CONNOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Eldorado, in the county of Jackson and State of Oklahoma, have invented a new and useful lVashing-Machine, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive and eflicient washing apparatus of the duplex type wherein the actual washing may be conducted in one receptacle from which the clothes, passing through a wringer conveniently located may be depcaited in the other compartment for rinsing or bluing purposes, the means for manipulating the contents of the receptacles being such as to secure the maximum cleansing effect.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will appear as the description proceeds, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional View partly in elevation of an apparatus constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
In the construction illustrated, the receptacle is divided to provide separate compartments 11 and 12 respectively fitted with lids or covers 13 and 1% in which are mounted the devices for manipulating the clothing, the parts being so arranged as to permit of the opening or raising of either of the covers or lids without removal of the washing apparatus, or the displacement thereof with reference to the cover or lid. Also arranged between the two compartments is a wringer support 15 to facilitate the transfer during the wringing operation, of the clothing from one receptacle to the other, it being noted that the hinges of the covers or lids are at the remote end of the receptacle so that the inner or proximate, edges of the covers or lids may be elevated to expose the contents of the compartments.
Suitably mounted upon a bracket 16 or other support is a rocker 17 having arms 18 to which are connected respectively the vertical staffs 19 of pounders 20 slidable through the cover, adjustable connections being established between said staffs and rocker arms by providing the former with openings 21 and the latter with slots 22 for engagement by suitable pins or bolts 23. The rocker or lever 17 is fulcrumed intermediate its ends to the upstanding bracket 16 parallel with a line connecting the staffs 19, and the ends of the lever are offset, as seen in Fig. .4, over said line and connected to the staffs.
Also revolubly mounted in a suitable bearing 24 in the cover or lid is a rubber carrier 25 consisting in the construction illustrated of a cylinder or tube in which is mounted the stem 26 of a rubber 27 adapted for oscillatory movement which is imparted there to through the carrier 25 which in turn receives motion from a depending segment 27 on the rocker meshing with a bevel gear 28 on the carrier. The carrier or rotatable member 25 is journaled through the cover in the line connecting the staffs, whereby the pounders work at diametrically opposite sides of the rubber 27. The rubber is yieldiugly held in a depressed position but is adapted to be forced upwardly to relieve undue strain, the stem of said rubber being mounted for axial movement in the cylinder of the carrier and being held normally depressed by means of a spring 28 which at its lower end engages a shoulder 29 on said stem.
It will be noted that the pounders operate on opposite sides of the rubber, and as they are brought into operative contact with the materials in the receptacles alternately, the rubber meanwhile having an oscillatory or alternating rotary movement, the cleansing efiect is substantial while the wear and tear upon the fabrics is minimized, all parts of the contents of the receptacle being successively brought within range of the operation of the pounders. hen it is desired to open one of the covers it is only necessary to throw the rocker by means of its handle 30 down to the tilted position indicated at the right of Fig. 1, when by continuing the downward pressure upon the handle 30 the cover may be raised at its free edge. The disposition of the operating mechanism is such as to permit the cover to be raised at its free edge without bringingthe pounders or other parts in contact with the receptacle. In this way, the opening of either of the receptacles to permit access to the interior thereof is facilitated and may be conducted practically in one operation with the manipulation of the mechanism.
hat is claimed is In a washing machine, a cover, a pair of vertical staffs slidable therethrough, a r0- tary member journaled through the cover 5 between and in a line connecting said staffs, an upstanding bracket carried by the cover at one side of said line, a rocking lever ful crumed intermediate its ends to the bracket parallel with said line and having its ends 10 offset over said line and connected to the staffs, a bevel gear carried by said rotary member, and a depending segment carried by the lever meshing with said gear.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signa- 15 ture in the presence of two Witnesses.
HAMPTON CONNOR.
