SAMUEL H. HODGES, OF LYNN, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO THE HODGES EDGE-TRIMMIN G AND SETTING-MACHINE ASSOCIATION, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN ROTARY EDGE-KEYS FOR POLISHING BOOTS AND SHOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,477, dated February 6, 1872.
To all to whom these presents shall come:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL H. HODGES, of Lynn,in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have made an invention of a new and useful Improvement in Rotary Edgc-Keys for the Polishing of Boot and Shoe Soles; and do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description thereof, due ref erence being had to the accompanying drawing making part of this specification, and in which-'- Figure l is an edge View, and Fig. 2 an end View of an edge-key embodying my improvement.
My present invention relates to a rotary edge-key, so called, which is a circular disk of steel, having its perimeter provided with a flanch or guide for traveling in the seam between the sole and upper of a boot or shoe, the contact of said perimeter with the soleedge having the effect of imparting to the latter the desired polished surface.
This invention consists in dividin g the flange or edge-guide as well as the polishing-face of the edge-key by a series of depressions, in order to lessen the heat-accumulating and radiating surface, and permit of a circulation of air, to a certain extent, between the key and the sole-edge, and by this means retard the heating of the key to such an extent that no injury to the sole results.
The drawing represents at A a rotary edgekey, composed of a circular disk, a, having upon one edge an outstanding concentric'annular lip or flanch, b, and a finishing-bead, 0, such being the present construction of edgekeys. In carrying my improvements into effeet, in one manner in which it will operate to practical advantage, I cut diagonally across the polishing-face of its perimeter a series of channels or depressions, (l d, &c., in size and number as circumstances and the nature of the work demand, these channels being disposed preferably at an oblique angle with respect to the path of revolution of the disk, in order to draw the grain of the leather away from the edge of the sole, and obtain a finished corner thereat. This disposition or direction of the channels, however, is a matter of preference, and not an arbitrary one, as it may be varied considerably.
As before stated, the dividing of the perimeter of the disk by a series of the channels or their equivalents retards and lessens the degree of heat which the disk will assume, and l have found in practical use of my invention that the presence of the channels imparts to the action of the disk the effect of a series of light concussions upon the leather, which produce advantageous results.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A rotary flanged edge-key having its flange or edgeguide and guard entering between the upper and sole, as well as its polishing edge, or
face corrugated or channeled, substantially in the manner herein shown and described.
SAMUEL HORATIO HODGES.
