Description

J. FILSON, Jr.
Curry Combs.
No.'12 3,469. Patented Feb. 6, 1872.

UNITED STATES JOSIAH FILSON, JR, OF RACINE, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN CURRY-COMBS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,469, dated February 6, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSIAH FILSON, Jr., of Racine, in the county of Meigs and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curry-Combs, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and the letters of reference marked there on making part of this specificatiomin which-- Figure l is a plan view. Fig.2 is a vertical sectional view. Fig. 3 is an end view. Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional View of the detachable plate on the line 00 m, Fig. 1.
The nature of my invention consists in securing the serrated or comb-bars to a detachable plate or card, which is entirely independent of the back and handle of the curry-comb, but yet so constructed and arranged that, by means of grooves on the back and a spring-latch or equivalent device, the comb-plate can be readily in serted and rigidly secured thereon so as to operate exactly as in the ordinary curry-comb.
The great advantage of this arrangement will readily suggest itself, especially when it is remembered that it is the comb-bars alone that are subjected to injurious wear. With all the curry-combs now in use, so soon as the combbars are destroyed the entire device is valueless, and is thrown aside. But with my device it is ditt'erent. You have simply to lift the spring-bolt and withdraw the worn plate and insert a fresh one, and you have, to all intents and purposes, a new curry-comb.
The construction and operation of my invention is as follows:
A is the back, and A the handle. These may be constructed of any suitable material and connected in the usual manner. On the rear and sides of this plate are provided flanges a a, which are so turned down as to form or leave on the under side of the back A three grooves, b b. On the upper face of the back A is secured one or more springlatch plates, 0 G, which terminate in hooked heads 0 c, the outer section of which projects a little beyond the surface of the back A. D is the comb-plate, which is constructed of any suitable material,
and is to be of such dimensions as to allow of its being inserted in the grooves b b, and of its fitting snugly therein after it has been introduced. D D are the serrated or comb-bars, which may also be constructed of any suitable material, and of any desired form. These bars D D are rigidly secured to the plate 1). The front section of this plate D, as clearly shown. in Fig. 4, is so turned up as to leave aflanged shoulder, d, which serves as a bearing for the hooked head 0 of the spring-latch plate 0.
From the foregoing description, the operation will be readily understood. The back A and plate D being constructed as stated, the latter is inserted in the grooves b b, when the hooked head 0 of the spring-latch plate 0, falling down over the flanged shoulder cl, securely and firmly locks the plate in position, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. The device is now as perfect, and in every way as firm and strong, as is the ordinary curry-comb. So soon as the teeth are worn off, instead of throwing away the curry-comb as no longer of any value, and as you are compelled to do with all curry-combs now known to the trade, you simply lift the spring-latch G, withdraw the worn-out plate, and insert another, when, in reality, the curry-comb is as good as when it was first purchased. Thus all the advantages of a new curry-comb are secured at the trifling expense of providing a fresh combplate.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-- 1. The detachable plate D, having serrated or comb-bars D D secured thereon, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the back A, constructed with the flanges b b and spring-latch plate 0, with the comb-plate D, substantially as do.- scribed.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOSIAH FILSON, JR. Witnesses:
W. B. SKrvRIN, P. A. BURGSTRESER.
