To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, HARRY O. BERNARD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Birmingham, in the county of Jefferson and State of Alabama, have. invented an Improvement in Culvert-Pipes, of which the following is a specilication.
My invention is an improvement in culvert pipes, and has for its object to provide a pipe of the character specified of sectional type, and wherein a new and improved form of connecting means is provided for the sections, and between the lengths of the pipe.

In the present embodiment of the invention each length of pipe consists of similar sections 1, and each of the said sections is provided at one end with a bell portion 2, the bell portions of the sections cooperating to form a complete hell when the sections are properly fitted together. Each section is provided with circumferential reinforcing ribs 3, which at their ends are enlarged, as indicated at 4L and 5, respectively, to form a species of head at each end of each rib.
One of these heads or enlargements, namely the enlargement 4, is provided with a pocket 6 and the other head or enlargement 5 is provided with a lug 7 adapted to engage a pocket of the other section, and to fit therein, to provide a lock between the sections for preventing lateral movement thereof. At the inner side of the pockets, each section has a longitudinally extending rib 8, and at the opposite side and at the lugs 7 each section has a similar rib 9.
The rib 9 of each section is adapted to engage outside of the rib 8 of the other section, to make. a seal between the sections when the sections are united. The bell portion 2 of each section is flattened at points exteriorly into hexagonal form, as indicated at 10 and at the flattened portions the groove 11 which is formed within the bell is also flattened to Specification` of- Letters Batent.

At the opposite end each section has a rib portion 12 which is shaped to t the bell portion of the adjacent section, the said rib portions being of hexagonal outline'. Just within the rib portion but in spaced relation is a second rib portion 13, between which and the portion 12 fits the adjacent end of the bell.
Thus the sections of each length are not only sealed together, but the lengths are also sealed, the rib portionsu1 12 and 13 and the bell portions 2 forming a perfect joint. The flattening of the bell not only reduces the size of the same, but reduces the weight as well, a. feature of importance in pipe of the character in question, since it is necessary `to keep the weight down to the lowest possible point. The flattening of the bell also eliminates any tendency of the pipe to roll. Any sand or dirt that may be carried into the pipe by the first use of the same is caught by the circumferential rib portions 13 and effectively seals the joint.
The longitudinal ribs 8 and 9 prevent lateral movement of the sections with respect to each other, while the lugs 7 and the pockets 6 prevent longitudinal movement of the sections as well as lateral movement.
I claim:
1. A culvert pipe consisting of similar sections, each section having at one end a bell portion provided with an internal groove and having at the other end a rib adapted to engage the groove of an adjacent section, and a second rib spaced in wardly from the first rib andvadapted to engage the end of the bell portion of the adjacent section, said bell portion of the pipe having a hexagonal internal and external outline, and the first named rib portions having a similar outline, each section having circumferentially extending external reinforcing ribs enlarged at their ends, the enlargements at one end having pockets and the enlargements at the other end having lugs litting within the pockets, each section having at the side adjacent to the pockets and spaced inwardly therefrom a longitudinally extending rib, and having at the other side edge a rib at the lugs and adapted to t alongside the rst named rib of the from the irst rib and adapted to engage other section. the end of the loe-ll portion of the adjacent 10 Q.
